Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for his leather socks (khuffs) in order to put them on. He put on one of them; then a crow came, picked up the other, and went and threw it down, and a snake came out of it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not put on his leather socks before shaking them out."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Hashim bin Amr; I do not know him, except that Ibn Hibban mentioned a Hashim bin Amr in Kitab al-Thiqat in his generation, and apparently it is the same person, although he did not mention that this narrator narrates from Isma'il bin Ayyash. In this hadith Isma'il's teacher is a Syrian, so its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy),
and this narration would be sahih (authentic), if Allah wills.
The narration has already passed earlier, in the chapter on abandoning a life of ease: "Live rough, and walk barefoot."
