Sayyiduna Jarir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: We set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (on a journey). When we had come out of Madinah, a rider was approaching us from the front. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It seems this rider is coming to you. What the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant was that he was coming to us. The narrator states: When he reached us, he gave the greeting of peace, and we returned his greeting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: Where are you coming from? He replied: From my wife and children and my family. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Where are you heading? He said: I am heading to the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You have reached him. The man said: O Messenger of Allah! Teach me what faith is. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That you bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah, that you establish prayer, pay zakah, fast in Ramadan and perform Hajj to the House of Allah. He said: I affirm it. The narrator states: Then his camel's foot went into the burrow of a jirdhan (a particular kind of rat), and the camel fell and the man fell too. He fell on his head and died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bring this man to me! Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) rushed to him. They both sat him up and said: O Messenger of Allah! He has passed away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face away from them both. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them both: As for your seeing me turn my face away from this man, the reason is that I saw two angels showering him with the fruits of Paradise, and so I realized that he was hungry when he died. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: By Allah! He is one of those about whom Allah Almighty has said: "Those who believe and do not mix their faith with wrongdoing: for them there is security, and they are the rightly guided." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Take care of your brother! So we carried his body to the water; we washed him, applied fragrance to him and shrouded him, then carried his body to the grave. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Make a lahd (side niche); do not make a shaqq (central trench).
In one narration the words are: "He is one of those who did little but were given a great reward."
In one narration the words are: His camel's foot went into the burrow of a yarbu' (a particular kind of rat).
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded all these narrations; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Janab, who is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain), and he has narrated this report too with the word 'an (from). And Allah knows best.

Sayyiduna Jarir (may Allah be pleased with him) states: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent (with prophethood), I came to him to pledge allegiance to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: O Jarir! Why have you come to us? I said: I have come to accept Islam at your blessed hands. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) invited me to bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty and that I (that is, the Prophet) am the Messenger of Allah. (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:) You are to perform the obligatory prayer, give the obligatory zakah, and believe in destiny, good and bad (of every kind). The narrator states: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) extended his cloak towards me. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to his Companions and said: "When an honoured member of a people comes to you, show him respect."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its chain contains a narrator, Husayn bin Umar, whose weakness and lying are agreed upon.

Sayyiduna Ibn al-Khasasiyah al-Sadusi (may Allah be pleased with him) states: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to pledge allegiance to him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) laid down this condition for me: That you bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger, that you perform the five prayers, fast in Ramadan, pay zakah, perform Hajj to the House of Allah, and wage jihad in the path of Allah. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Two things I am not able to do: paying zakah, because I have only ten camels, and they serve my family for their work and their travel; and the second thing is jihad, because people say that whoever turns his back and returns brings the wrath of Allah Almighty with him, so I fear that when I am present at a battle, fear will enter my heart and I will dislike death (and by abandoning jihad I will become deserving of the wrath of Allah Almighty). So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) closed his fist, moved it and said: No charity and no jihad, then on what basis will you enter Paradise?
(The narrator states:) So I pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on all of those things.
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it; these are the words of Imam al-Tabarani, and the narrators of Imam Ahmad have been declared trustworthy.

It is reported about a man from Banu Amir that, seeking permission from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: May I come in? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his slave-girl: Go out to him, for he does not know how to seek permission properly. Tell him that he should say: As-salamu alaykum, may I come in? The narrator says: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say this, so I said: As-salamu alaykum, may I come in? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave permission, so I came in. I said: What message have you brought to us? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I have brought you nothing but good. I have come to you with (these commands): that you worship Allah Almighty alone, besides whom there is no god; He is One, He has no partner (here the narrator Shu'bah said: I think the narration also contains these words:) He is One, He has no partner; and that you abandon al-Lat and al-Uzza, that you perform five prayers in the night and day, that you fast one month of the year, that you perform Hajj to the House of Allah, and that you take wealth (that is, zakah) from your well-off people and return it to your poor. The narrator states: He asked: Is there anything of the unseen left that you do not know? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty has knowledge of much good, and there are some matters of the unseen which no one knows except Allah Almighty; among them are these five things (which are mentioned in the Qur'an:) "Indeed, with Allah Almighty alone is the knowledge of the Hour, and He sends down the rain, and He knows what is in the wombs; no one knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no one knows in which land he will die. Indeed, Allah Almighty is All-Knowing, All-Aware."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Abu Dawud recorded part of this narration.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and all its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy) and imams.

A Companion from the Qays tribe, whose name is Ibn al-Muntafiq, states: The description of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was given to me, so I looked for him in Makkah. I was told: He (peace and blessings be upon him) is in Mina. I looked for him in Mina, and I was told: He (peace and blessings be upon him) is at Arafat. When I reached him, I made my way through the crowd and came to him. I took hold of the rein of the mount of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (here the narrator is unsure about one word), until the necks of our mounts touched one another, yet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) neither rebuked me nor pushed me away. I said: I want to ask you about two things: What can save me from Hell? And what can admit me into Paradise? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards the sky, then lowered his head, then turned his face towards me and said: You have asked a brief question, but it is a great (important) and lengthy (question). Remember this from me! Worship Allah Almighty! Do not associate anyone with Him as a partner; perform the obligatory prayer, pay the obligatory zakah, and fast in Ramadan. Whatever you would like people to do to you, do the same to them; and whatever you would dislike people doing to you, do not do that to people. Then he said: Leave the mount's path free!
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Abi Aqil al-Yashkuri; I have not seen anyone narrate from him other than his son, al-Mughirah bin Abdullah.

Al-Mughirah bin Sa'd narrates this statement from his father, or perhaps his uncle: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at Arafah and took hold of the rein of his she-camel (here the narrator is unsure about one word). I began to be pushed back from him, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Leave him! He must have come for some important matter. I said: Tell me of a deed that will bring me close to Paradise and keep me far from Hell. The narrator states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head towards the sky and then said: You have asked a brief, yet weighty and lengthy question. Worship Allah Almighty! Do not associate anyone with Him as a partner; perform prayer, give zakah, perform Hajj to the House of Allah, fast in Ramadan, and treat people the way you would like people to treat you; and whatever you dislike for yourself, do not do that to people. And now let go of the she-camel's rein!
Abdullah (the son of Imam Ahmad) recorded this narration in his "Ziyadat", and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir through various chains and various narrators, some of whom are thiqat (trustworthy), although there is considerable weakness in Yahya bin Isa.

Hujayr narrates this statement from his father, whose kunyah was Abu al-Muntafiq. He states: I came to Makkah and asked about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The people told me that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was at Arafah. I came and drew near to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), until the neck of my she-camel began to touch the neck of the she-camel of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me of that which will save me from the punishment of Allah and admit me into Paradise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Worship Allah! Do not associate anyone with Him as a partner; perform the obligatory prayer, pay the obligatory zakah, perform Hajj and Umrah, fast in Ramadan, and consider: whatever you like people to do to you, do the same to people; and whatever you dislike people doing to you, do not do that to people.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, "Hujayr", who is the son of a Companion, but I have not seen anyone mention him.

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Allah Almighty sent Sayyiduna Yahya bin Zakariyya (peace be upon them both) to the Children of Israel with five words. When Allah Almighty sent Sayyiduna Isa (peace be upon him), Allah Almighty said: O Isa! Tell Yahya bin Zakariyya: Either you convey to the Children of Israel that with which I sent you, or I will convey it to them. So Sayyiduna Yahya (peace be upon him) set out, came to the Children of Israel and said: 'Indeed, Allah Almighty commands you to worship Him and not to associate anyone with Him as a partner. The example of this is like a man who frees a slave, treats him well and gives him wealth and the like; then the slave goes off, denies that man's favour and attaches himself to someone other than him. Allah Almighty also commands you to establish prayer. The example of this is like a man whom the enemy captures and intends to kill; that man says: Do not kill me, I have a treasure, and I will ransom myself. So he gives them his treasure and saves himself. Allah Almighty has also commanded you to give charity. The example of this is like a man who goes towards the enemy carrying a shield for battle; he does not care from which side he will be attacked. Allah Almighty commands you to recite the Book. The example of this is like people who are in their fortress; their enemy advances towards them, and they have kept men ready on every side of the fortress, so from whichever side of the fortress the enemy comes, there are men in front of him who stop him from reaching the fortress. This is the example of the one who recites the Qur'an: he is in the strongest of fortresses.'"
The narrator states: I did not find the fifth thing mentioned in my written copy.
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy, except for Imam al-Bazzar's teacher, al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin Abbad; (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I do not know him.

Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) cited him as a supporting narrator, and Imam Ahmad and Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy), but others have called him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are six things; whoever brings even one of them will come in such a state that he will have a covenant on the Day of Resurrection. Each one of them will say: This person used to act upon me. (These things are:) zakah, prayer, Hajj, fasting, fulfilling trusts, and maintaining the ties of kinship."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Yunus bin Abi Hathmah, and I have not seen anyone mention him.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: (Once,) at the time of the Isha prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed his Companions: Tomorrow morning you are to be ready at prayer time, for I have something I need from you. Some of them said: O so-and-so! You must keep in mind the first word the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will say, and you must keep in mind the second word. Their aim was that nothing of the speech of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) should be missed. (The next morning,) when they had finished praying, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Are you ready as I instructed you? They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Worship your Lord and do not associate anyone with Him as a partner! Have you understood this? Have you understood this? Have you understood this? The people said: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Establish prayer and pay zakah; establish prayer and pay zakah; establish prayer and pay zakah. Have you understood this? Have you understood this? Have you understood this? The people said: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Listen and obey; listen and obey; listen and obey. Have you understood this? Have you understood this? Have you understood this? The people said: Yes!
The narrator states: We had thought that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would speak at length, but when we reflected on his words, it became clear that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had gathered the whole matter (that is, the fundamental teachings of the religion) for us.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam al-Tirmidhi recorded part of this narration, but without this context.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin Zibriq al-Himsi, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and Abu Hatim declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and Imam Abu Dawud declared him da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Amr bin Murrah al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) states: A man from the Quda'ah tribe came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty and that you (peace and blessings be upon him) are the Messenger of Allah; I perform the five prayers, I fast in Ramadan at its proper time, and I pay zakah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever dies in this state will be among the truthful (siddiqin) and the martyrs.
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and apart from Imam al-Bazzar's two teachers, all its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih; and I hope that its chain is hasan (good) or sahih (authentic).

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts in Ramadan, performs the five prayers and performs Hajj to the House of Allah (the narrator says: I do not know whether he mentioned zakah or not), it is binding upon Allah Almighty that He forgive that person. (Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) says:) I said: Shall I tell people this? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Leave people to keep doing deeds! For Paradise has one hundred levels, and between every two levels there is a distance like that between the heaven and the earth. Jannat al-Firdaws is the highest and finest level; above it is the Throne of the Most Merciful, and from it the rivers of Paradise gush forth. When you ask Allah Almighty, ask Him for Jannat al-Firdaws!"
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it; Ata' bin Yasar narrated it from Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), although he did not hear from Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: In the chapter after this, hadiths will come that relate to this chapter.
