Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: (Once,) at the time of the Isha prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed his Companions: Tomorrow morning you are to be ready at prayer time, for I have something I need from you. Some of them said: O so-and-so! You must keep in mind the first word the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will say, and you must keep in mind the second word. Their aim was that nothing of the speech of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) should be missed. (The next morning,) when they had finished praying, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Are you ready as I instructed you? They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Worship your Lord and do not associate anyone with Him as a partner! Have you understood this? Have you understood this? Have you understood this? The people said: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Establish prayer and pay zakah; establish prayer and pay zakah; establish prayer and pay zakah. Have you understood this? Have you understood this? Have you understood this? The people said: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Listen and obey; listen and obey; listen and obey. Have you understood this? Have you understood this? Have you understood this? The people said: Yes!
The narrator states: We had thought that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would speak at length, but when we reflected on his words, it became clear that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had gathered the whole matter (that is, the fundamental teachings of the religion) for us.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam al-Tirmidhi recorded part of this narration, but without this context.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin Zibriq al-Himsi, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and Abu Hatim declared thiqah (trustworthy), while Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and Imam Abu Dawud declared him da'if (weak).
