Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated in a gathering. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him and sat before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He placed both his palms on the knees of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me about Islam! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Islam is that you submit yourself to Allah, and that you bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty, He alone is God, He has no partner, and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger. He asked: When I do that, will I have become a Muslim? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you do that, you will be a Muslim. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me about faith! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Faith is that you believe in Allah Almighty, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, the prophets, death and life after death, and that you believe in Paradise, Hell, the Reckoning and the Scale, and that you believe in destiny of every kind, good or bad. He said: When I do that, will I be a believer? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you do that, you will be a believer. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me, what is meant by ihsan (excellence)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Ihsan means that you act for Allah Almighty as though you see Him; and if you do not see Him, He sees you. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me, when will the Hour come? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah)! There are five things of the unseen which no one knows except Allah Almighty (Allah Almighty has said:) "Indeed, with Allah Almighty alone is the knowledge of the Hour; He sends down the rain, and He knows what is in the wombs; and no one knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no one knows in which land he will die. Indeed, Allah Almighty is All-Knowing, All-Aware." (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:) But if you wish, I will tell you some signs that will appear before it. He said: Very well, O Messenger of Allah! Tell me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you see that a slave-woman has given birth to her mistress (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words were:) to her master, or you see the builders competing with one another in constructing tall buildings, and you see that those who did not even have shoes, who were hungry and destitute, have become the rulers of the people, then these matters will be among the signs and portents of the (approach of the) Hour. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Those people of buildings, who have no shoes on their feet, who are hungry and destitute, who is meant by them? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Arib (the destitute).
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded something similar, except that in Imam al-Bazzar's narration the words are: "Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the form of a pale, haggard traveller." In Imam Ahmad's chain there is a narrator, Shahr bin Hawshab.

رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَفِي إِسْنَادِهِ شَهْرُ بْنُ حَوْشَبٍ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Amir, or perhaps Sayyiduna Abu Amir, or perhaps Sayyiduna Abu Malik: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated in a gathering in which his Companions were also present. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him in human form; (an onlooker) would have taken him for a Muslim. He gave the greeting of peace, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned his greeting. Then Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) placed his hand on the knees of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by Islam? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That you submit yourself to Allah Almighty, and that you bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger, and that you establish prayer and pay zakah. He said: When I do that, will I have become a Muslim? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! He asked: What is meant by faith? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That you believe in Allah Almighty, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, the prophets, death, life after death, Paradise, Hell, the Reckoning, the Scale, and destiny of every kind, good or bad! He asked: When I do that, will I be counted a believer? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! Then he asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by ihsan (excellence)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That you worship Allah Almighty as though you see Him; and if you cannot see Him, He sees you. He asked: When I do that, will I be counted among those who have ihsan? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! The narrator states: We could hear the replies of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but we could not see the person who was speaking with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), nor could we hear his words. He asked: O Messenger of Allah! When will the Hour be established? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah)! There are five things of the unseen which no one knows except Allah Almighty (which are mentioned in the Noble Qur'an in these words:) "Indeed, with Allah Almighty alone is the knowledge of the Hour; and He sends down the rain, and He knows what is in the womb; no one knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no one knows in which land he will die. Indeed, Allah Almighty is All-Knowing, All-Aware." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: But if you wish, I will tell you about its signs which will appear before the Hour. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said: Tell me! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you see that a slave-woman has given birth to her master, and the builders are constructing tall buildings, and destitute people who used not even to have shoes on their feet have become the rulers of the people (then these will be major signs of the Hour drawing near). He asked: O Messenger of Allah! Who are those people? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Arib (the destitute).
The narrator states: Then that person went away, and we did not see his path (that is, we did not see him leaving). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Subhan Allah! This was Jibril, who came to teach people their religion. By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), whenever he came to me I recognized him, except that this time the matter was different."
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator, Shahr bin Hawshab.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) states: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated with his Companions. Meanwhile a man came to him wearing travelling clothes; he came making his way through the people and sat before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He placed his hand on the knee of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! What is meant by Islam? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bearing witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty, He alone is God, He has no partner, and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger; and establishing prayer, paying zakah, fasting the month of Ramadan, and performing Hajj to the House of Allah if you are able to make the journey there. He asked: When I do that, will I be counted a Muslim? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! He said: You have spoken the truth. The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to one another): Look at this man! He himself is asking the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then confirming him as though he knows more than him. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) did not recognize this man. He said: O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! What is meant by faith? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Faith is that you believe in Allah Almighty, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, the prophets, death, being raised again, the Reckoning, Paradise, Hell and destiny of every kind. He asked: When I do that, will I be counted a believer? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! He said: You have spoken the truth. Then he said: O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! What is meant by ihsan (excellence)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That you fear Allah Almighty as though you see Him; and if you do not see Him, He sees you. He said: When I do that, will I be counted among those who have ihsan? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! He said: You have spoken the truth. Then he said: O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! When will the Hour come? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one being asked about it does not know more than the one asking.
(The narrator states:) Then the man turned and left. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bring this man to me. The people went after him and searched for him, but they did not see anything. They returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! We went after the man and searched for him, but we did not see anything. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That was Jibril, who came to you in order to teach you your religion.
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, al-Dahhak bin Nibras. Imam al-Bazzar says: There is no harm in him (laysa bihi ba's), while the majority declared him da'if (weak).

رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ ، وَرِجَالُهُ مُوَثَّقُونَ .
It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): A man came to him and said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! We travel and meet some people who say: Destiny has no reality. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When you meet them, tell them that Abdullah bin Umar has nothing to do with them. (Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar narrated this hadith:) Once we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came to him. His face was handsome, his fragrance was pleasant, and his clothes were clean. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Peace be upon you. May I come close to you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Come close! So he came somewhat closer. He said this several times, until his knees touched the knees of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by Islam? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bearing witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah; and establishing prayer, giving zakah, performing Hajj to the House of Allah, fasting in Ramadan, and taking the ritual bath (ghusl) after major ritual impurity (janabah). He asked: When I do this, will I be counted a Muslim? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! He said: You have spoken the truth. What is meant by faith? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Faith means that you believe in Allah Almighty, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, Paradise, Hell, and in destiny, good or bad, sweet or bitter (that is, of every kind), as being from Allah Almighty. He asked: When I do that, will I be counted a believer? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! He said: You have spoken the truth. What is meant by ihsan (excellence)? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That you worship Allah Almighty as though you see Him; and if you do not see Him, He sees you. He asked: When I do that, will I be counted among those who have ihsan? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! He said: You have spoken the truth. The narrator says: We thought: We have never seen anyone more handsome or more pleasantly fragrant than this man, or anyone showing greater reverence to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and yet he is saying to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): You have spoken the truth. (When the man had left,) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bring this man to me! We got up, and I too went towards one of the roads of Madinah, but we did not see anything. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Do you know who this was? The people said: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This was Jibril, teaching you the rites of your religion. In whatever form he came to me, I recognized him, except that in this form the matter was different.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy (muwaththaqun).
