Sayyiduna Ibn al-Khasasiyah al-Sadusi (may Allah be pleased with him) states: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to pledge allegiance to him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) laid down this condition for me: That you bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty and that Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger, that you perform the five prayers, fast in Ramadan, pay zakah, perform Hajj to the House of Allah, and wage jihad in the path of Allah. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Two things I am not able to do: paying zakah, because I have only ten camels, and they serve my family for their work and their travel; and the second thing is jihad, because people say that whoever turns his back and returns brings the wrath of Allah Almighty with him, so I fear that when I am present at a battle, fear will enter my heart and I will dislike death (and by abandoning jihad I will become deserving of the wrath of Allah Almighty). So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) closed his fist, moved it and said: No charity and no jihad, then on what basis will you enter Paradise?
(The narrator states:) So I pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on all of those things.
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it; these are the words of Imam al-Tabarani, and the narrators of Imam Ahmad have been declared trustworthy.
