Al-Mughirah bin Sa'd narrates this statement from his father, or perhaps his uncle: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at Arafah and took hold of the rein of his she-camel (here the narrator is unsure about one word). I began to be pushed back from him, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Leave him! He must have come for some important matter. I said: Tell me of a deed that will bring me close to Paradise and keep me far from Hell. The narrator states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head towards the sky and then said: You have asked a brief, yet weighty and lengthy question. Worship Allah Almighty! Do not associate anyone with Him as a partner; perform prayer, give zakah, perform Hajj to the House of Allah, fast in Ramadan, and treat people the way you would like people to treat you; and whatever you dislike for yourself, do not do that to people. And now let go of the she-camel's rein!
Abdullah (the son of Imam Ahmad) recorded this narration in his "Ziyadat", and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir through various chains and various narrators, some of whom are thiqat (trustworthy), although there is considerable weakness in Yahya bin Isa.
