Hadith Beginning with the Letter Alif (أ)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Four among the animals (and birds) are not to be killed (for killing them is forbidden): the ant, the honeybee, the hoopoe and the surad (a kind of bird of prey)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"There are four kinds of people whom Allah Almighty intensely hates (and dislikes): the trader who sells his goods by swearing many oaths, the arrogant poor (needy) person, the old man who commits adultery, and the tyrannical ruler."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Four people will present their argument (excuse) on the Day of Resurrection: a deaf man who could hear nothing, a foolish (insane) man, an extremely old man, and a man who died during the fatrah (the interval between two messengers). The deaf man will say: O Lord, Islam came but I could not hear anything. The foolish man will say: O Lord, Islam came but I understood nothing, and children used to throw dung at me. The extremely old man will say: O Lord, Islam came but my mind did not function. And the one who died during the fatrah will say: O Lord, no messenger of Yours came to me. Then Allah Almighty will take a covenant from them that they will surely obey Him, and He will send a message to them: Enter the Fire. Whoever enters it, it will become cool and safe for him, and whoever does not enter it will be dragged into it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Four rak'ahs before Zuhr are equal (in reward) to the prayer at the time of suhur (tahajjud)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"There are four practices of the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) in my Ummah which people will not abandon: boasting about lineage and descent, taunting the lineage of others, seeking rain through the stars, and wailing (over the dead)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"There are four things of the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) in my Ummah which people will not give up: taunting lineage, wailing over the dead, attributing rain to the stars, saying that it rained on us because of such and such a star, and the belief in contagion, that one camel gets mange and it infects a hundred camels with mange. (If that is so,) then who gave mange to the first camel?!"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"The four rak'ahs before Zuhr in which the salam is not given in between (that is, they are prayed together), the gates of the heaven are opened for them."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Four kinds of animals are not valid for sacrifice: the one-eyed animal whose one-eyedness is evident, the sick animal whose sickness is evident, the lame animal whose lameness is evident, and the emaciated (weak) animal that has no marrow left in its bones."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Four things are part of happiness: a righteous wife, a spacious house, a righteous neighbour and a comfortable mount. And four things are part of misery: a bad wife, a bad neighbour, a bad mount and a cramped house."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Among the deeds of the living, four (are such that their reward) continues for the dead: a man who left behind righteous children who supplicate for him, so their supplication benefits him; a man who gave an ongoing charity to continue after him, so he will receive its reward for as long as it continues; and a man who taught knowledge which was then acted upon after him, so he will receive a reward equal to that of the one who acts upon it, without anything being reduced from the reward of the one who acts upon it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Whoever has four traits will be a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of these traits will have a trait of hypocrisy until he abandons it: when he is entrusted with something, he betrays; when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a covenant, he acts treacherously; and when he quarrels, he uses abusive language."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Whoever has four traits will be a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of these traits will have a trait of hypocrisy until he abandons it: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; when he makes a covenant, he acts treacherously; and when he quarrels, he uses abusive language."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"There are forty good traits, the highest of which is giving someone a she-goat to drink its milk. Any servant who acts upon any one of these traits, hoping for its reward and believing in the promise made for it, Allah Almighty will admit him into Paradise because of it."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Go back to your parents and ask their permission (to go for jihad). If they give you permission, then fight in jihad; otherwise, treat them with kindness."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Return to your families and stay among them, teach them (the religion) and command them (to do good), and pray just as you have seen me praying. Then when the time of prayer comes, let one of you call the adhan for you, and let the eldest of you lead you in prayer."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Take care of your close relatives, take care of your close relatives (that is, be diligent in maintaining ties of kinship)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"The most compassionate of my Ummah towards my Ummah is Abu Bakr, the sternest (firmest) of them in the matter of Allah (His religion) is Umar, the one among them with the truest modesty is Uthman, the best reciter among them of the Book of Allah is Ubayy bin Ka'b, the greatest expert in the knowledge of inheritance shares (fara'id) is Zayd bin Thabit, and the most knowledgeable about the lawful and the unlawful is Mu'adh bin Jabal. And every Ummah has a trustworthy one, and the trustworthy one of this Ummah is Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Show mercy to those who are on the earth, and the One who is in the heaven will show mercy to you."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Show mercy (to people) and you will (also) be shown mercy, and forgive and you will (also) be forgiven. Woe to those who merely hear speech and let it pass straight out, and destruction to those who stubbornly persist (the obstinate ones), who knowingly persist in what (sins) they have done."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"The Angel of Death was sent to Musa (peace be upon him). When he came to him, he slapped him and knocked out his eye. He returned to his Lord and said: You sent me to a servant who does not want to die. Allah Almighty restored his eye and said: Go back to him and tell him to place his hand on the back of a bull, and for every hair that his hand covers he will be given one year of life. He asked: O my Lord, then what will happen? Allah said: Then death. He said: Then now (give me death). So he supplicated to Allah Almighty to bring him as close to the Holy Land (Bayt al-Maqdis) as the distance of a stone's throw. If I were there, I would certainly show you his grave beside the road, beneath the red sand dune."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"The land of Paradise will be (like) white bread (that is, on the Day of Resurrection Allah Almighty will turn the earth into one enormous loaf, which the people of Paradise will eat)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Give (in the way of Allah) little by little as much as you can, and do not hoard (your wealth) by counting it out, or else Allah Almighty will also withhold from you."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Keep those who collect your charity (zakah) pleased."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Raise your izar (lower garment or trousers) (above the ankles) and fear Allah."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Keep away from the low-lying part of the valley of Uranah, and keep away from the low-lying part of the valley of Muhassir as well."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Keep away from the low-lying part of the valley of Muhassir, and use small pebbles (for stoning) of the kind flicked between the fingers."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Take care of your subordinates (slaves), take care of your subordinates! Feed them from what you yourselves eat and clothe them from what you yourselves wear. And if they commit a sin (or mistake) that you do not wish to forgive, then sell these servants of Allah, but do not punish (torment) them."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"You may perform ruqyah (for treatment), as long as it contains no associating of partners with Allah (shirk)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Ride the sacrificial animals in a reasonable manner as need requires, until you find another mount."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Ride these mounts while they are sound and leave them while they are sound, and do not make them into chairs for your conversations in the streets and markets (that is, do not sit on them talking at length), for many a ridden animal is better than its rider and remembers Allah more than he does."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Pray these two rak'ahs, that is, the sunnah prayer after Maghrib, in your homes."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Stone the Jamrah (during the stoning rites) with pebbles like the small pebbles flicked between the fingers."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"O descendants of Isma'il! Practise archery, for indeed your father (Sayyiduna Isma'il (peace be upon him)) was also an excellent archer."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"The souls of the believers are in the bellies of green birds that keep eating from the fruit of the trees of Paradise, until Allah Almighty returns those souls to their bodies on the Day of Resurrection."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"I was shown Paradise, and I saw in it the wife of Abu Talhah. Then I heard the sound of footsteps ahead of me, and it was Bilal."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"I was shown some people of my Ummah travelling on the surface of the sea, seated like kings upon their thrones."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"You were shown to me twice in a dream. An angel was carrying you in a piece of silk and saying, 'This is your wife.' When I uncovered her, it was you. Upon that I would say, 'If this (dream) is from Allah Almighty, He will surely bring it to pass.'"

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"I was shown the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr), but then I was made to forget it. However, I saw myself prostrating in water and mud on its morning."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"I was shown the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr), then one of my family woke me and I forgot it. So seek it in the remaining last ten nights (of Ramadan)."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"I was shown the conditions my Ummah will face after me, and that they will shed one another's blood. This had already been decreed by Allah, just as it was for the nations before them. So I asked Allah to grant me the right of intercession for them on the Day of Resurrection, and He granted my request."
