أخبرنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن عبد الله الزاهد، حدثنا محمد بن إسماعيل السُّلَمي، حدثنا عبد الله بن صالح، حدثني معاوية بن صالح، عن رَبِيعة بن يزيد (1)، عن أبي إدريس الخَوْلاني، عن أبي أمامة الباهلي، عن رسول الله ﷺ قال: "عليكم بقِيام الليل، فإنه دَأْبُ الصالحين قبلَكم، وهو قُرْبةٌ لكم إلى ربِّكم، ومَكْفَرةٌ للسيئات، ومَنْهاةٌ عن الإثم" (2). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط البخاري، ولم يُخرجاه.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold fast to standing in prayer at night (tahajjud), for it is the way of the righteous who came before you; it is a means for you of nearness to your Lord, an expiation for sins, and a restraint from sin."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but they did not record it.

أخبرني أبو تُراب أحمد بن محمد المذكِّر بالنَّوْقان، حدثنا تَمِيم بن محمد، حدثنا محمد بن أسلَم الزاهد، حدثنا مُؤمَّل بن إسماعيل، حدثنا سليمان بن المغيرة، حدثنا ثابت، عن أنس قال: وَجَدَ رسول الله ﷺ ذاتَ ليلة شيئًا، فلما أصبح قيل: يا رسول الله، إن أثَرَ الوجَع عليك لبيِّنٌ، قال: "أَمَا إنِّي على (1) ما تَرَون، بحمد الله قد قرأتُ السَّبعَ الطِّوال" (2). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه.
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that one night the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) felt some pain. When morning came, it was said: O Messenger of Allah, the effects of pain on you are quite evident. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, I am in the state you see, but by the grace of Allah I have recited (tonight) the seven long surahs (al-Sab' al-Tiwal)."

حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا إبراهيم بن مرزوق، حدثنا أبو داود، حدثنا شعبة، قال: سمعتُ يزيد بن خُمَير يقول: سمعتُ عبد الله بن أبي قيس يقول: قالت لي عائشة: لا تَدَعْ قيام الليل، فإنَّ رسول الله ﷺ كان لا يَذَرُه، وكان إذا مَرِض أو كَسِل صلَّى قاعدًا (1).
Abdullah bin Abi Qays narrates that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to me: "Never abandon the tahajjud prayer, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) never left it, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was ill or felt tired, he would pray sitting."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever keeps to these five obligatory prayers will not be written among the heedless, and whoever recites one hundred verses in a night will be written among the devoutly obedient (qanitin) to Allah."

أخبرنا بكر بن محمد الصَّيرَفي، حدثنا جعفر بن محمد بن شاكر، حدثنا سعد بن عبد الحميد بن جعفر، حدثنا عبد الرحمن أبي الزِّناد، عن موسى بن عُقبة، عن عُبيد الله بن سَلْمان، عن أبيه أبي عبد الله سلمانَ الأغرّ، عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "من صلَّى في ليلةٍ بمئة آية لم يُكتبْ من الغافلين، ومن صلَّى في ليلةٍ بمئتي آيةٍ فإنه يُكتبُ من القانتين المخلَصِين" (1). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever prays with one hundred verses in a night will not be written among the heedless, and whoever prays with two hundred verses in a night will be written among the sincere, devoutly obedient servants of Allah."

حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا بَحْرُ بن نَصْر بن سابِق الخَوْلاني، حدثنا ابن وَهْب، أخبرني معاوية بن صالح، حدثني سُلَيم بن عامر وضَمْرة ابن حَبِيب ونُعيم بن زياد، عن أبي أُمامةَ الباهلي، قال: حدثني عمرو بن عَبَسة قال: أتيتُ رسول الله ﷺ وهو نازلٌ بعُكَاظ، فقلت: يا رسول الله، هل من دعوةٍ أقربُ من أخرى، أو ساعةٍ يُتَّقى أو ينبغي ذِكرُها؟ قال: "نَعَم، إنَّ أقربَ ما يكونُ الربُّ من العبد جوفَ الليلِ الآخِرَ، فإن استطعتَ أن تكون ممّن يذكُرُ الله في تلك الساعة فكُنْ" (1). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه.
Sayyiduna Amr bin Abasah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was staying at Ukaz, and I said: O Messenger of Allah! Is there any supplication that is nearer (to acceptance) than another, or is there any hour that should be observed, or in which remembrance is most fitting? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, the Lord is nearest to His servant in the last middle part of the night, so if you are able to be among those who remember Allah in that hour, then do so."

حدثني محمد بن صالح بن هانئ، حدثنا يحيى بن محمد بن يحيى، حدثني أبي، حدثنا عبد القُدُّوس بن الحجّاج، حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي مريم، عن عبد الله بن أبي قَيْس، عن أُمَّهات المؤمنين، أنهنَّ حدَّثْنه: أَنَّ الله دلَّ نبيَّه على دليل، فقال لهنَّ: ادْلُلنَني على ما دلَّ عليه نبيَّه ﷺ؟ فقلن: إنَّ الله دلَّه على قيام الليل (1). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه.
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Abi Qays that the Mothers of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with them) told him that Allah Almighty guided His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to a (particular) deed. So Abdullah said to them: Tell me too, to which deed did Allah guide His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? They said: Allah guided him (peace and blessings be upon him) to standing in prayer at night (tahajjud).

أخبرنا أبو بكر بن إسحاق، أخبرنا أبو المثنَّى، حدثنا مُسدَّد، حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد، حدثنا ابن عَجْلان، عن القَعقاع بن حَكِيم، عن أبي صالح، عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "رَحِم الله رجلًا قام من اللَّيل فصلَّى، وأيقَظَ امرأته، فإنْ أَبَتْ نَضَحَ في وجهها الماءَ، رَحِم الله امرأةً قامت من اللَّيل فصلَّتْ، وأيقظَتْ زوجَها، فإنْ أبى نَضَحَت في وجهه الماءَ" (2). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah have mercy on a man who gets up at night and prays, and wakes his wife as well; then if she refuses, he sprinkles water on her face. And may Allah have mercy on a woman who gets up at night and prays, and wakes her husband; then if he refuses, she sprinkles water on his face."

حدثنا علي بن حَمْشاذ العَدْلُ، حدثنا عُبيد بن شَرِيك، حدثنا يحيى بن بُكَير، حدثنا الليث، عن عبد الله بن عُبيد الله بن أبي مُلَيكة، عن يعلى بن مَمْلَك: أنه سأل أمَّ سَلَمة عن قراءة رسول الله ﷺ، وصلاتِه بالليل، فقالت: وما لكم وصلاتِه، كان يُصلي، ثم ينام قَدْرَ ما صلَّى، ثم يُصلي بقَدْرِ ما نام، ثم ينامُ قدرَ ما صلَّى، حتى يُصبح. ونَعتَتْ له قراءتَه، فإذا هي تَنعَتُ قراءةً مفسَّرةً حرفًا (1). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه.
Ya'la bin Mamlak narrates that he asked Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) about the night prayer and the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: What concern is his (peace and blessings be upon him) prayer (and its manner) to you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray, then sleep for as long as he had prayed, then pray for as long as he had slept, then sleep for as long as he had prayed, until morning came. And she described his (peace and blessings be upon him) recitation, and it was a recitation that pronounced each letter separately and clearly.

أخبرني عبد الله بن محمد الصَّيدلاني، حدثنا محمد بن أيوب، أخبرنا محمد بن عبد الله بن نُمَير، حدثنا أبي، حدثنا عِمْران بن زائدة بن نَشِيط، عن أبيه، عن أبي خالد الوالِبي، عن أبي هريرة: أنه كان إذا قام من الليل رَفَعَ صوتَه طَوْرًا وخَفَضَه طَورًا، وكان يَذكُر أنَّ رسول الله ﷺ كان يَفعلُ ذلك (1). هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he stood (for tahajjud) at night, he would sometimes raise his voice and sometimes keep it low, and he used to say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also did the same.

حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا بَحْر بن نَصْر، حدثنا عبد الله بن وهب، أخبرني معاوية بن صالح، أنَّ عبد الله بن أبي قيس حدثه: أنه سأل عائشةَ كيف كانت قراءة رسول الله ﷺ من الليل، أكان يَجهَر أم يُسِرّ؟ قالت: كلَّ ذلك كان يفعل، ربما جَهَر، وربما أسرَّ، قال: قلت: الحمد الله الذي جَعَل في الأمر سَعَةً (2). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، شاهدًا لحديث أبي خالد عن أبي هريرة.
Abdullah bin Abi Qays narrates that he asked Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited at night: did he recite aloud or silently? She said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) did both; sometimes he recited aloud and sometimes silently. So I said: All praise is for Allah, who has made latitude in this matter.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, and it is a supporting witness (shahid) for the previous hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).

أخبرني أبو الحسين محمد بن أحمد بن تمِيم القَنْطَري، حدثنا جعفر بن محمد بن شاكر، حدثنا يحيى بن إسحاق السَّيْلَحِينيّ، حدثنا حمّاد بن سَلَمة، عن ثابت البُنانيّ، عن عبد الله بن رَبَاح، عن أبي قَتادةَ: أنَّ النبيَّ ﷺ مَرَّ بأبي بكرٍ وهو يصلي يَخفِضُ من صوته، ومَرَّ بعُمر وهو يصلي رافعًا صوتَه، فلما اجتمعا عند النبي ﷺ قال لأبي بكر: "يا أبا بكر، مررتُ بكَ وأنتَ تصلي تخفِضُ من صوتك! " قال: قد أسمعتُ من ناجيتُ، فقال: "مررتُ بكَ يا عمر وأنت تَرفعُ صوتك! " قال: يا رسول الله أحتسِبُ به أُوقظُ الوَسْنان، قال: فقال لأبي بكر: "ارفَعْ من صوتك شيئًا"، وقال لعمر: "اخفِضْ من صوتك" (1). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was praying in a low voice, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was praying in a loud voice. When both of them gathered with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu Bakr: "O Abu Bakr! I passed by you while you were praying in a low voice?" He said: (O Messenger of Allah!) I have made the One I was conversing with hear me. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umar! I passed by you while you were raising your voice!" He said: O Messenger of Allah! I hope for reward through it, that I may wake the drowsy one. The narrator says: So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu Bakr: "Raise your voice somewhat," and said to Umar: "Lower your voice somewhat."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

أخبرنا الحسن بن يعقوب العدلُ، حدثنا الحسين بن محمد بن زياد، حدثنا محمد بن رافع ومحمد بن يحيى، قالا: حدثنا عبد الرزاق، أخبرنا معمر، عن إسماعيل بن أمية، عن أبي سَلَمة بن عبد الرحمن، عن أبي سعيد الخُدْري قال: اعتكف النبي ﷺ في المسجد، فسَمِعهم يَجهَرون بالقراءة، وهو في قُبَّةٍ له، فكَشَفَ السُّتور وقال: "ألا كلُّكم يناجي ربَّه، فلا يُؤذِينَّ بعضُكم بعضًا، ولا يَرفَعنَّ بعضُكم على بعضٍ في القراءة في الصلاة" (1). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) observed i'tikaf in the mosque, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the people reciting aloud while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in his tent. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) drew back the curtains and said: "Indeed, each one of you is conversing intimately with his Lord, so let none of you harm another, and let none of you raise his voice over another in the recitation of the prayer."

حدثنا يحيى بن منصور القاضي، حدثنا أبو بكر محمد بن محمد بن رجاء بن السِّنْدي، حدثنا أبو كُرَيب وموسى بن عبد الرحمن المَسْروقي، قالا: حدثنا الحسين بن علي الجُعْفي، حدثنا زائدة، عن سليمان، عن حَبِيب بن أبي ثابت، عن عَبْدة بن أبي لُبابة، عن سُوَيد بن غَفَلَة، عن أبي الدَّرْداء، يَبلُغ به النبيَّ ﷺ قال: "من أَتى فِراشَه وهو يَنْوي أن يقومَ بالليل فغَلَبتْه عينُه حتى يُصبحَ، كُتب له ما نَوَى، وكان نومُه صدقةً عليه من ربِّه" (1). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه، والذي عندي أنهما علَّلاه بتوقيفٍ رُوِيَ عن زائدة:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him), who traces it back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever comes to his bed intending to get up at night and pray, but his eyes overcome him until morning comes, what he intended will be written for him, and his sleep will be a charity to him from his Lord."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it; and in my view, they regarded it as defective because it is also narrated from Za'idah as mawquf (a statement of the Companion):

حدَّثَناه أبو بكر بن إسحاق، أخبرنا محمد بن أحمد بن النَّضْر، حدثنا معاوية بن عمرو، حدثنا زائدة، فذكره بإسناده من قول أبي الدَّرْداء (2). وهذا مما لا يُوهِن، فإنَّ الحسين بن علي الجُعْفي أقدمُ وأحفظُ وأعرفُ بحديث زائدة من غيره، والله أعلم.
The previous hadith of Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) is narrated as his own statement (mawquf). And this does not weaken the hadith, because al-Husayn bin Ali al-Ju'fi is earlier, a better memoriser, and more expert in the hadith of Za'idah than the other narrators.

حدثنا يحيى بن منصور القاضي، حدثنا محمد بن محمد بن رجاء، حدثنا موسى بن عبد الرحمن، حدثنا حسين بن علي عن زائدة، عن هشام بن حسّان، عن محمد بن سِيرين، عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "لا تخُصُّوا يومَ الجمعة بصيام من بين الأيام، ولا تخُصُّوا ليلةَ الجمعة بقيامٍ من بين الليالي" (1). هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه!
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not single out the day of Friday among the days for fasting, nor single out the night of Friday among the nights for standing in prayer."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it!
