It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was praying in a low voice, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was praying in a loud voice. When both of them gathered with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu Bakr: "O Abu Bakr! I passed by you while you were praying in a low voice?" He said: (O Messenger of Allah!) I have made the One I was conversing with hear me. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umar! I passed by you while you were raising your voice!" He said: O Messenger of Allah! I hope for reward through it, that I may wake the drowsy one. The narrator says: So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu Bakr: "Raise your voice somewhat," and said to Umar: "Lower your voice somewhat."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: (1) It is "sahih li-ghayrihi"; al-Hakim's shaykh is hasan in corroborating narrations, but there is disagreement over whether it is connected (mawsul) or mursal. Yahya al-Silhini narrated it as connected, while Musa bin Isma'il narrated it as mursal, and according to al-Tirmidhi and Abu Hatim the "mursal" version is the preponderant one. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1329), al-Tirmidhi (447) and Ibn Hibban narrated it through the chain of Yahya bin Ishaq al-Silhini. Al-Tirmidhi called it "gharib" and said that most narrators transmitted it from Thabit from 'Abdullah bin Rabah as "mursal". Grading: So far we have found the mursal narration only from Musa bin Isma'il; however, Abu Hatim al-Razi also held its being mursal to be correct and considered it a mistake of al-Silhini. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Abu Hurayrah in Abu Dawud (1330) is a supporting report (shahid) for it, and its chain is hasan. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of 'Ali in Musnad Ahmad (2/865) is a supporting report for it, but its chain is da'if.
