Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1173

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever keeps to these five obligatory prayers will not be written among the heedless, and whoever recites one hundred verses in a night will be written among the devoutly obedient (qanitin) to Allah."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) On the basis of all its routes and supporting reports it is "hasan", although this chain is da'if because of inconsistency (idtirab). There is disagreement over whether it is marfu' or mawquf; in al-Daraqutni's view, its being mawquf on Ka'b al-Ahbar is what is preferable.
Technical note: Abu al-Muwajjih refers to Muhammad al-Fazari, Abdan to Ibn Uthman, Abu Hamzah to al-Sukkari, and Abu Salih to Dhakwan al-Samman.
Reference / Source: al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (2002) through the chain of Imam al-Hakim.
Reference / Source: al-Marwazi narrated it in "Qiyam al-Layl", and Ibn Khuzaymah (1142) through the chain of Abu Hamzah al-Sukkari. Al-Marwazi took only the second part, which mentions that reciting "a hundred verses" keeps one from being written among the heedless.
Variation in the chain: Ibn Abi Shaybah (10/508) narrated it through the route of Asim bin Abi al-Nujud as "mawquf" on Abu Hurayrah (his own statement).
Variation in the chain: Sa'id bin Mansur and Musaddad narrated it through the route of Abu Sinan as "mawquf", with doubt whether it is from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri or Abu Hurayrah.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah and al-Bayhaqi also narrated it as mawquf on Abu Hurayrah through the route of Abu Hazim Salman al-Ashja'i.
Variation in the chain: al-Darimi (3494) and al-Tabari, via al-A'mash from Abu Salih, made it a statement of "Ka'b al-Ahbar" (mawquf).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah, through another chain, also attributed it to Ka'b al-Ahbar.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym mentioned in "al-Hilyah" (6/4), within a long narration from Ka'b, that whoever recites ten verses before morning is not written among the heedless.
Repetition: It will come later at no. (2064) as marfu' through the chain of Suhayl bin Abi Salih: "Whoever recites ten verses at night will not be written among the heedless."
Grading: The most authentic narration on this topic is that of Abd Allah bin Amr bin al-As (Abu Dawud 1398, Ibn Hibban 2572), whose chain is "hasan"; it mentions that for ten verses one is kept from heedlessness, for a hundred verses one is written among the qanitin (the devoutly obedient), and for a thousand verses among the muqantirin (those who receive immense reward).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Ibn Umar bin al-Muttalib will come in al-Mustadrak (2065), but its chain is "wahin" (extremely weak).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Tamim al-Dari is reported in Ahmad and al-Nasa'i with a da'if chain.
Grading: The narration mawquf on Abu Umamah (al-Darimi 3498) has a sahih chain.
Grading: The narration mawquf on Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (al-Darimi 3496) has a strong (qawi) chain.
