Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) related: Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered me to spend the night with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So I went to the mosque, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in the Isha prayer, until no one remained in the mosque except him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me and said: "Who is this?" I said: Abdullah. He said: "What is the matter?" I said: Abbas has ordered me to stay with you tonight. He said: "Then come along." He said: When he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned home, he said: "Spread a bed for Abdullah." So a pillow of sackcloth was brought for me. He said: Abbas had already told me beforehand: Do not sleep until you have memorised his (peace and blessings be upon him) prayer. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) lay down and slept until I heard the sound of his (peace and blessings be upon him) breathing. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat up straight on his bed, raised his head toward the sky and said three times: "Subhan al-Malik al-Quddus (Glory be to the King, the Most Holy, free of every flaw)." Then he recited this verse at the end of Surah Al Imran, "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth", up to the end (of the surah). Then he stood up, used the tooth-stick (miswak), performed ablution, then went to his place of prayer and prayed two units (rak'ahs), neither short nor long. Then he returned to his bed and slept until I heard the sound of his (peace and blessings be upon him) breathing. Then he sat up straight on his bed and did as he had done the first time, then used the tooth-stick, performed ablution, then went to his place of prayer and prayed two units, neither long nor short. Then he returned to his bed and slept until I heard the sound of his (peace and blessings be upon him) breathing. Then he sat up straight on his bed and did as he had done before, then prayed, then prayed the Witr. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "O Allah, place light in my sight, place light in my hearing, place light in my tongue, place light in my heart, place light on my right, place light on my left, place light in front of me, place light behind me, place light above me, place light beneath me, place light for me on the Day of Resurrection, and make light great for me."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) related that his father (Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him)) sent him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for some matter. He said: I found him (peace and blessings be upon him) sitting among his Companions in the mosque, so I could not speak to him (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had prayed Maghrib, he stood to pray (voluntary prayer) until the muezzin called the adhan for the Isha prayer, and the people hurried to stand. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer and then stood to pray (voluntary prayer), until those who had remained in the mosque also left. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) set off for his house, and I followed behind him (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard my footsteps, he said: "Who is this?" and turned toward me. I said: Ibn Abbas. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The son of the paternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" I said: Yes, the son of the paternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Welcome to the cousin of the Messenger of Allah. What has brought you?" I said: My father sent me for such and such a matter. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have you just come?" I said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Since you have not gone back by this hour, you will not go back now." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered his house and I entered with him (peace and blessings be upon him). I said to myself: I will certainly watch the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) slept until I heard the sound of his (peace and blessings be upon him) breathing. Then he woke up, cast his gaze toward the sky and recited these verses of Surah Al Imran, from "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth" to the end, five verses, finishing at "Indeed, You do not break the promise" [Surah Al Imran: 194]. Then he said: "O Allah, place light in my hearing, light in my sight, light beneath me, and place light for me with You." Beside him (peace and blessings be upon him) was a basin of stoneware with a tooth-stick (miswak) placed on it, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) used the tooth-stick, then performed ablution, then prayed two units (rak'ahs). Then he slept again until I heard the sound of his (peace and blessings be upon him) breathing, then woke up, recited the verses and made the same supplication, then used the tooth-stick, performed ablution, then prayed two units. Then he slept until I heard the sound of his (peace and blessings be upon him) breathing, then woke up, recited the verses and made the same supplication, then used the tooth-stick, performed ablution, then prayed two units. Then he slept until I heard the sound of his (peace and blessings be upon him) breathing, then recited the verses, then made the same supplication, then used the tooth-stick, performed ablution, then offered a prayer in which I knew he (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying the Witr. I stood on his (peace and blessings be upon him) left side, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of my ear with his finger and turned me around until he made me stand on his right side. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed the two units of Fajr, then went out for the prayer.

So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And your Lord is going to give you (so much) that you will be satisfied" [Surah al-Duha: 5]. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to pray at night, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had prayed the two rak'ahs before Fajr, he said: "O Allah, I ask You for a mercy from Yourself by which You guide my heart, gather my scattered affairs, unite my disordered state, restore my harmony, set right my religion, guard what is absent from me, raise my standing, purify my deeds, brighten my face, inspire me with right guidance, and protect me from every evil. O Allah, grant me true faith, and certainty after which there is no disbelief, and a mercy through which I attain the honour of Your generosity in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for success at the time of judgement, the lodging of the martyrs, the life of the fortunate, the companionship of the prophets, and victory over the enemies. O Allah, I have laid my need before You, even though my judgement is weak and my deeds are deficient, and I am in need of Your mercy. O Decider of all affairs, O Healer of hearts! I ask You that, just as You keep apart (and protect) between the seas, You protect me from the punishment of the Blazing Fire, from the cry of destruction, and from the trial of the grave. O Allah, whatever my judgement has fallen short of, and my deeds have not reached, and my hope has not attained, of a good that You have promised to any of Your servants, or a good that You are going to give to any of Your creation, I too long for it from You, and I ask You for it, O Lord of the worlds. O Allah, make us guides and rightly guided, neither astray nor leading astray; at war with Your enemies and at peace with Your friends. We love people with Your love, and out of enmity for You we are hostile to whoever of Your creation opposes You. O Allah, this is the supplication, and the answering is up to You; O Allah, this is our effort, and reliance is upon You; and there is no power to avoid sin and no strength to do good except through Allah. O Possessor of the firm rope and the right command! I ask You for safety on the Day of the Threat, and Paradise on the Day of Eternity, along with those brought near who are present, those who bow and prostrate, and those who fulfil their covenants. Indeed, You are Most Merciful, Most Loving, and You do whatever You will. Glory be to the One who wrapped Himself in might and spoke by it; glory be to the One for whom alone praise is befitting; glory be to the Possessor of the Throne and splendour; glory be to the Possessor of power and generosity; glory be to the One who has encompassed everything in His knowledge. O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my grave, light in my hearing, light in my sight, light in my hair, light in my skin, light in my flesh, light in my blood, light in my bones, light in front of me, light behind me, light on my right, light on my left, light above me, and light beneath me. O Allah, increase my light, make my light great, and make for me light."
