Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I reached him in the evening, while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the house of my maternal aunt Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to pray at night, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had prayed the two rak'ahs before Fajr, he said: "O Allah, I ask You for a mercy from Yourself by which You guide my heart, gather my scattered affairs, unite my disordered state, restore my harmony, set right my religion, guard what is absent from me, raise my standing, purify my deeds, brighten my face, inspire me with right guidance, and protect me from every evil. O Allah, grant me true faith, and certainty after which there is no disbelief, and a mercy through which I attain the honour of Your generosity in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for success at the time of judgement, the lodging of the martyrs, the life of the fortunate, the companionship of the prophets, and victory over the enemies. O Allah, I have laid my need before You, even though my judgement is weak and my deeds are deficient, and I am in need of Your mercy. O Decider of all affairs, O Healer of hearts! I ask You that, just as You keep apart (and protect) between the seas, You protect me from the punishment of the Blazing Fire, from the cry of destruction, and from the trial of the grave. O Allah, whatever my judgement has fallen short of, and my deeds have not reached, and my hope has not attained, of a good that You have promised to any of Your servants, or a good that You are going to give to any of Your creation, I too long for it from You, and I ask You for it, O Lord of the worlds. O Allah, make us guides and rightly guided, neither astray nor leading astray; at war with Your enemies and at peace with Your friends. We love people with Your love, and out of enmity for You we are hostile to whoever of Your creation opposes You. O Allah, this is the supplication, and the answering is up to You; O Allah, this is our effort, and reliance is upon You; and there is no power to avoid sin and no strength to do good except through Allah. O Possessor of the firm rope and the right command! I ask You for safety on the Day of the Threat, and Paradise on the Day of Eternity, along with those brought near who are present, those who bow and prostrate, and those who fulfil their covenants. Indeed, You are Most Merciful, Most Loving, and You do whatever You will. Glory be to the One who wrapped Himself in might and spoke by it; glory be to the One for whom alone praise is befitting; glory be to the Possessor of the Throne and splendour; glory be to the Possessor of power and generosity; glory be to the One who has encompassed everything in His knowledge. O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my grave, light in my hearing, light in my sight, light in my hair, light in my skin, light in my flesh, light in my blood, light in my bones, light in front of me, light behind me, light on my right, light on my left, light above me, and light beneath me. O Allah, increase my light, make my light great, and make for me light."
