I said: "I have come to ask you about wiping over the leather socks." He said: "Yes, I was in the army that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to wipe over the leather socks when we had put them on in a state of purity: three days when travelling and one night when resident, and not to take them off because of defecation, urination or sleep, and to take them off only because of major ritual impurity (janabah)." He said: And I also heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "In the west there is a door open for repentance, the distance of a journey of seventy years, which will not be closed until the sun rises from the west."

He (peace and blessings be upon him) answered him in the same manner and said: 'Wait.' He asked: 'What do you say about a man who loves a people but has not joined them?'
