Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 7334 — I came to Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal

Zirr bin Hubaysh (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I came to Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he asked me: "What has brought you?" I said: "The search for knowledge." He said: "Whenever a Muslim seeks knowledge, the angels spread their wings for him out of pleasure with what he does." I said to him: "You are one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I have felt a doubt in my heart about wiping over the leather socks after defecation and urination, so tell me something if you have heard anything from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to order us, when we were on a journey or travelling, to wipe over our leather socks for three nights and their days, and to take them off only because of major ritual impurity (janabah), not because of defecation, urination or sleep." I asked him: "Did you hear him say anything about love?" He said: "Yes, we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a military expedition, or an Umrah, when a Bedouin appeared, coming on his mount, until, when he reached the rear of the people, he began calling out in a loud voice: 'O Muhammad, O Muhammad!' It was said to him: 'Woe to you, lower your voice; you have been forbidden from this.' He said: 'By Allah, I will not do so until he hears me.' He was a rough, harsh-spoken Bedouin. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard his voice, he said: 'Yes, listen.' He asked: 'What do you say about a man who loves a people but has not yet joined them?' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'He is with the one he loves.'" Then he (Sayyiduna Safwan, may Allah be pleased with him) kept on narrating hadiths to us until he told me (this hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)): "On the side of the west there is a door open for repentance, whose width is the distance of a journey of seventy years. It will remain open until the sun rises from its direction, and when it rises from its direction," that is the time when "no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before or earned some good through its faith." [Surah al-An'am: 158]
