Zirr bin Hubaysh (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I went early in the morning to Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal al-Muradi (may Allah be pleased with him), wanting to ask him about wiping over the leather socks. He asked: "What has brought you?" I said: "The search for knowledge." He said: "Shall I not give you glad tidings?" I said: "Of course." So, attributing it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "The angels spread their wings for the seeker of knowledge out of pleasure with what he seeks." Then he asked him about wiping over the leather socks, and he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The traveller should wipe over the leather socks for three days and nights because of urination, defecation or sleep, not because of major ritual impurity (janabah)." Then he began narrating to us and said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey when a Bedouin called out to him (peace and blessings be upon him) in a loud voice: "O Muhammad, O Muhammad, O Muhammad!" I said: "Lower your voice; you have been forbidden from calling out loudly." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) answered him in the same manner and said: "Yes, listen." Then he asked about love: about a man who loves a people but has not joined them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A person is with the one he loves." Then he began narrating to us and said: "The door of repentance is open on the side of the west; its width is the distance of a journey of seventy years. It will not be closed until the sun rises from its direction." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Are they waiting for nothing but that the angels should come to them" (to the end of the verse) [Surah al-An'am: 158].
