Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 7321 — I came to Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal

Zirr bin Hubaysh (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I came to Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal al-Muradi (may Allah be pleased with him), and he asked: "What has brought you?" I said: "I have come in search of knowledge." He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever leaves his house in search of knowledge, the angels spread their wings for him out of pleasure with what he does." I said: "I have come to ask you about wiping over the leather socks." He said: "Yes, I was in the army that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent. He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to wipe over the leather socks when we had put them on in a state of purity: three days when travelling and one night when resident, and not to take them off because of defecation, urination or sleep, and to take them off only because of major ritual impurity (janabah)." He said: And I also heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "In the west there is a door open for repentance, the distance of a journey of seventy years, which will not be closed until the sun rises from the west."
