Zirr bin Hubaysh (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I was the strictest of people regarding wiping over the leather socks. Then I met Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal al-Muradi (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him. He said: "What has brought you so early in the morning?" I said: "The search for knowledge." He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever goes out early in the morning seeking knowledge is in the path of Allah until he returns, and the angels spread their wings for the seeker of knowledge." He said: And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has opened a door on the side of the west for repentance, the distance between its two leaves being seventy years. It will not be closed until the sun rises from its direction." I said: "May Allah have mercy on you, tell me more." He said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey when a loud-voiced Bedouin called out to him (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Muhammad, stop, we want to ask you three things." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) answered him in the same manner: "Yes, listen." The Bedouin came and said: "A man loves a people but has not done deeds like theirs (what is his ruling)?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A person is with the one he loves." The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were not as delighted by any hadith as they were by this hadith. I said: "Tell me about wiping over the leather socks." He said: "When we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, we would wipe for three days and nights, and for the resident a day and a night."
