Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred on the day of Uhud, Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) came looking for him, not knowing what had happened to him. She met Ali and Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both). Ali said to Zubayr: "You tell your mother (Safiyyah)." And Zubayr said to Ali: "You tell your aunt." Then Safiyyah asked: "What has become of Hamzah?" Both of them gave the impression that they did not know. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and said: "I fear for her reason." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on her chest and supplicated for her, and she said "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return)" and wept. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Hamzah, who had been mutilated, and standing over him said: "Were it not for the distress of the women, I would have left him as he is, until he was raised on the Day of Resurrection from the crops of birds and the bellies of wild beasts." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave orders concerning the martyrs and began to offer the funeral prayer over them. Each time he would place nine martyrs together with Hamzah and say seven takbirs over them; then they would be lifted away and Hamzah would be left. Then nine more martyrs would be brought and seven takbirs said over them, until he finished with all of them.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of Uhud the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at Hamzah, who had been killed and mutilated, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a sight more painful to his heart and more dreadful than any sight he (peace and blessings be upon him) had ever seen. He said: "May the mercy of Allah be upon you! You used to uphold the ties of kinship and do good deeds abundantly. Were it not for the grief of those you leave behind, I would have liked to leave you as you are, until you are raised (on the Day of Resurrection) from many different multitudes." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him), standing in his place, swore an oath: "By Allah! I will certainly mutilate seventy of them in return for you." Then, while he (peace and blessings be upon him) had not yet moved from his place, this verse was revealed: "And if you retaliate, retaliate with the like of that with which you were harmed; but if you are patient, it is better for those who are patient" [Al-Nahl: 126], until the end of the surah. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made expiation for his oath and refrained from what he had intended.

Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Uhud, 64 of the Ansar and 6 of the Muhajirun were martyred, among them Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him), and the idolaters mutilated their dead. The Ansar said: "If one day we get the upper hand over them, we will certainly do worse to them than this." Then when the day of the Conquest of Makkah came, an unknown man called out, saying: "There is no Quraysh after today." And Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "And if you retaliate, retaliate with the like of that with which you were harmed; but if you are patient, it is better for those who are patient" [Al-Nahl: 126]. So the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold back from the people (from retaliation)."

Then he sent for a striped sheet; when it was spread over his head his feet were exposed, and when it was spread over his feet his head was exposed. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Spread it over his head." At that time the cloths were few and the martyrs many, and one, two or three men would be shrouded in a single cloth. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would ask which of them knew more of the Qur'an and would place him forward, towards the qiblah. Then they were buried, and the funeral prayer was not offered over them.

So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Place it over his face, and cover his feet with some of this grass." The narrator said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and saw that his Companions were weeping, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A time will come upon the people when they will go out to the fertile lands, while Madinah is better for them, if only they knew. Whoever is patient with its hardship and difficulty, I will be an intercessor or a witness for him on the Day of Resurrection."

Sa'id bin Jubayr narrates: When Hamzah and his companions were martyred on the day of Uhud, they said: "If only those we left behind knew how much reward Allah has given us, so that it might be a source of reward for them too." So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: "I will inform them." And Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, revealed this verse: "And never think of those who have been killed in the way of Allah as dead" [Al Imran: 169], to the end of the verse.
Hadith Referenceالمعجم الكبير للطبراني / باب الحاء / 2933
Hafs bin Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ubaydullah bin Adi bin al-Khiyar and I set out and entered the pass of the Romans. Then we passed through Hims, where Wahshi (may Allah be pleased with him) was. I said: "Why do we not go to him and ask him how he killed Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah have mercy on him)?" So we headed towards him. On the way a man met us while we were asking about him, and he said: "He is a man who has been overcome by wine. If you find him sober, you will find him an Arab man who will tell you whatever you wish; but if you find him otherwise, turn back from him." So we came to him and found him in the courtyard of his house. He looked at Ubaydullah bin Adi and said: "The son of Adi bin al-Khiyar?" He said: "Yes." He said: "I have not seen you since your mother, who was from Banu Sa'd, handed you to me, and it is only the gleam of your feet that let me recognise you now." I said to him: "We have come to you so that you may tell us how you killed Hamzah." He said: "I was a slave of Jubayr bin Mut'im, and his uncle Tu'aymah bin Adi had been killed on the day of Badr. He said: 'If you kill Muhammad's uncle in return for my uncle, you are free.' So on the day of Uhud I went out with the people, taking my spear, and my only concern was to be freed. I made Hamzah my target and headed for him, but Siba' bin Abd al-Uzza went ahead of me towards him. I stayed a little away from him while he was striking the people down fiercely with his sword, as though he were an ash-coloured camel. When Siba' went towards him, Hamzah said: 'Come here, O son of the woman who circumcises!' He drew near him and struck him, but it was as if he missed him. I was hiding behind something; I balanced my spear until, when I was satisfied with it, I hurled it, and it struck him below the navel. He tried to rise but could not. I withdrew and returned with the people to Makkah, and I was freed. Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Makkah, I went out to Ta'if and stayed there. Then when the people of Ta'if resolved to make peace with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), every way was closed to me, and I began to think: where shall I go? While I was in this worry, a man came before me and said: 'What is the matter with you that I see you in this state?' I said: 'The matter is that I killed this man's uncle, and now I see that these people have resolved to make peace with him, and I do not know where to go.' He said: 'By Allah! He does not have anyone killed who comes to him and bears his testimony of faith.' So I set out just as I was, and by Allah, I was not aware of anything until I stood at his (peace and blessings be upon him) head in Madinah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head, looked at me and said: 'Wahshi?' I said: 'Yes, Wahshi,' and I bore the testimony of faith. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Woe to you! Tell me how you killed Hamzah.' So I told him, by Allah, the same account that I have told you both. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Woe to you! Keep your face hidden from me.' So I kept away from him (peace and blessings be upon him) until Allah Almighty took him in death. Then when Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent the army to Yamamah, I went out with the people and made Musaylimah my target. A man of the Ansar and I attacked him, and I had with me the same spear with which I had killed Hamzah. I struck him with the spear, and the Ansari also attacked him, so your Lord knows best which of us killed him. If I killed him, then I have killed both the best of people and the worst of people."

Mu'awiyah asked: "How old were you then?" He said: "On that day I was a robust young man, like a solid rock. It is as if I can see them now, having formed a long row facing us, and as if I can see the gleam of their swords like the rays of the sun through gaps in the clouds. I had not yet come to my senses when the charge of the enemy came upon us. At their head was Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), like a mighty lion tearing through the enemy, saying: 'You will not eat dates in the valley of Makkah again! You will not eat dates in the valley of Makkah again!' Behind him was Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib, with a white feather on his chest as a mark, like a camel trampling dry grass. I was terrified of them both, and the two of them turned upon Hanzalah," meaning Mu'awiyah's brother. Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Enough of that; give thanks to Allah. Well, tell me, when did you get away, O Hawdhah?" He said: "By Allah, O Commander of the Believers, I did not get away until I saw the hills of Arthad. Then I said to myself: If only I knew what became of Hanzalah." Mu'awiyah said: "Your remembering Hanzalah is like a rich man remembering his poor brother, for he is hardly remembered except when drowsy or feigning drowsiness."
