Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from his father Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Abd al-Muttalib said: I went to Yemen on one of the two journeys of the Ilaf, and I stayed with a man from the Jews. A monk (one of the people of the monasteries) saw me; he asked about my lineage, and I told him my lineage. He said: "Will you permit me to look at part of your body?" I said: "Yes, provided it is not the awrah (the private parts)." So he opened one of my nostrils and looked, then he looked into the other, and said: "I bear witness that in one of your hands there is kingship and in the other prophethood, and we find this among Banu Zuhrah too; how can that be?" I said: "I do not know." He asked: "Do you have a 'sha'ah'?" I asked: "What is a sha'ah?" He said: "A wife." I said: "Not today." He said: "Then when you return, marry among Banu Zuhrah." So Abd al-Muttalib returned and married Halah bint Wuhayb bin Abd Manaf bin Zuhrah, who bore him Hamzah and Safiyyah, and he married his son Abdullah to Aminah bint Wahb. Quraysh said: "Abd al-Muttalib has done the same for his son." Then Aminah gave birth to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Thus Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was the foster brother of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); Thuwaybah, the slave woman of Abu Lahab, had nursed them both, and Hamzah was older than the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: The acceptance of Islam by Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) came out of (family) honour. He was an archer; he would go out of the Haram to hunt, and when he returned he would pass by the gathering of Quraysh, who used to sit near Safa and Marwah. Hamzah would pass by them and say: "I shot such-and-such, and I did such-and-such," then he would go on to his home. One day he was returning from his hunting when a woman met him and said: "O Abu Umarah! What your nephew has suffered at the hands of Abu Jahl bin Hisham! He attacked him in all kinds of ways and did such-and-such to him." Hamzah asked: "Did anyone see it?" She said: "Yes, by Allah! People saw it." So he went on until he reached that gathering near Safa and Marwah; the people were sitting there and Abu Jahl was among them. Hamzah leaned on his bow and said: "I shot such-and-such and did such-and-such." Then he raised the hand holding his bow and struck it between Abu Jahl's ears, so that the tip of the bow broke. Then he said: "Take this blow of the bow, and another of the sword! I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah, and that he has brought the truth from Allah." The people said: "O Abu Umarah! He has reviled our gods. Even if you had done this yourself, and you are better than him, we would not have tolerated it. And O Abu Umarah, you have never been foul-mouthed."

Ya'qub bin Utbah bin al-Mughirah bin al-Akhnas bin Shariq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Abu Jahl confronted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Safa and harmed him. Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was fond of hunting and game, and that day he was out hunting. When he returned, his wife, who had seen what Abu Jahl had done to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), said to him: "O Abu Umarah! If only you had seen what he, meaning Abu Jahl, did to your nephew!" At this Hamzah became furious and set off just as he was, before entering his house, with his bow hanging from his neck, until he entered the Masjid (al-Haram). He found Abu Jahl in one of the gatherings of Quraysh, and without saying a word he struck him on the head with his bow and wounded him. Some men of Quraysh stood up to restrain Hamzah, and Hamzah said: "My religion is the religion of Muhammad. I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah. By Allah! I will never turn back from it. Stop me from it, if you are truthful." When Hamzah accepted Islam, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Muslims gained honour and strength through him, part of their affair became firm, Quraysh began to fear him, and they knew that Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) would protect him.
