حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، ثنا أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنِي الزُّهْرِيُّ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّ عَلَى حَمْزَةَ بَعْدَ أُحُدٍ وَقَدْ مُثِّلَ بِهِ، فَقَالَ: «لَوْلَا أَنْ تَجِدَ صَفِيَّةُ فِي نَفْسِهَا لَتَرَكْتُهُ حَتَّى تَأْكُلَهُ الْعَافِيَةُ حَتَّى يُحْشَرَ مِنْ بُطُونِهَا» . ثُمَّ دَعَا بِنَمِرَةٍ، فَكَانَتْ إِذَا مُدَّتْ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ بَدَتْ رِجْلَاهُ، وَإِذَا مُدَّتَ عَلَى رِجْلَيْهِ الثِّيَابُ بَدَا رَأْسُهُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مُدُّوهَا عَلَى رَأْسِهِ» . وَقَلَّتِ الثِّيَابُ وَكَثُرَتِ الْقَتْلَى، وَكَانَ الرَّجُلُ وَالرَّجُلَانِ وَالثَّلَاثَةُ يُكَفَّنُونَ فِي الثَّوْبِ الْوَاحِدِ، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْأَلُ أَيُّهُمْ أَكْثَرُ قُرْآنًا فَيُقَدِّمُهُ إِلَى الْقِبْلَةِ، فَدُفِنُوا وَلَمْ يُصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Hamzah after Uhud, who had been mutilated, and said: "Were it not that Safiyyah would feel pain in her heart, I would have left him as he is, until the animals ate him and he was raised on the Day of Resurrection from their bellies." Then he sent for a striped sheet; when it was spread over his head his feet were exposed, and when it was spread over his feet his head was exposed. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Spread it over his head." At that time the cloths were few and the martyrs many, and one, two or three men would be shrouded in a single cloth. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would ask which of them knew more of the Qur'an and would place him forward, towards the qiblah. Then they were buried, and the funeral prayer was not offered over them.
