Raja' bin Rabi'ah narrates: I was in the Prophet's Mosque when Sayyiduna Imam Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed by and greeted with salam. Those present returned his greeting, but Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent. Then, after the people had fallen silent, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his voice and said: "And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings." Then he turned to those present and said: "Shall I not tell you who, of the people of the earth, is the most beloved to the people of the heaven?" The people said: "Yes." He said: "This gentleman who has just left. By Allah! Since the Battle of Siffin until now, I have not spoken a word with him, nor has he spoken a word with me. And by Allah! If he were pleased with me, that would be dearer to me than receiving wealth as great as Mount Uhud." Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Will you go to him?" He said: "Very well." Then they agreed that the next day they would go to Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: I went with the two of them. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission to enter, and Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him permission. We went in, but Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) did not go in; he remained outside until Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him permission too, and then he came in. When Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him, he made room for him, and he came and sat beside Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) looked towards him. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) had stood up and did not sit; when he saw this, Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) moved aside and made room for him, and he sat between the two of them. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) related the whole incident, and Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "O Ibn Amr! Is it so? Do you know that I am, of the people of the earth, the most beloved to the people of the heaven?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes! By the Lord of the Ka'bah! You are, of the people of the earth, the most beloved to the people of the heaven." Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Then why did you fight against my father at the Battle of Siffin? By Allah! My father is better than me." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes, but Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) once complained about me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: 'Abdullah fasts during the day and keeps praying voluntary prayers at night.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Pray voluntary prayers at night and also sleep; keep voluntary fasts and also leave them; and obey Amr.' When the occasion of Siffin came, Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) adjured me by oath. By Allah! I did not add to their numbers, nor did I draw a sword for them, nor did I attack with a spear for their sake, nor did I shoot a single arrow for them." Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Do you not know that there is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to the Creator?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes!" The narrator says: It was as if he accepted this statement of Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Ali bin Sa'id bin Bashir, in whom there is some weakness, and he is a hafiz. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy). Before this, the report recorded by al-Bazzar has already passed in the biography of Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him). And Allah knows best.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her): "Keep watch over the door; let no one come in to us." The narrator says: Just then Sayyiduna Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) came and tried to come in. When they reached the place of Ninawa, while they were heading towards Siffin, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) called out loudly: "Be patient, O Abu Abdullah! Be patient, O Abu Abdullah, at the bank of the Euphrates!" I asked: "What is the reason for this?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "One day I came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and tears were flowing from his eyes. I said: 'O Prophet of Allah! Has someone angered you? Why are tears flowing from your eyes?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Jibril has just got up and left me; he told me that Husayn will be killed on the bank of the Euphrates. He said: Would you like me to let you smell some of its earth? I replied: Yes! So the angel stretched out his hand, took a handful of earth and gave it to me, and I could not control my eyes, and they began to flow.'"
Ahmad, Abu Ya'la, al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). The narrator Nujayy is not alone in reporting this narration.

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Sayyiduna Imam Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) (who was a child at that time) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while revelation was coming down upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He climbed onto the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had his head bowed, and he climbed onto the back of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Jibril asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Do you love him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Jibril, why would I not love my son?" Sayyiduna Jibril said: "After you, your Ummah will soon martyr him." Then Sayyiduna Jibril stretched out his hand and brought some white earth, and said: "Your son will be martyred in this land, and the name of this place is al-Taff." When Sayyiduna Jibril had left the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out; he had picked up Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) and was holding him close, and he was weeping. He said: "O Aishah! Jibril has told me that my son Husayn will be killed in the land of al-Taff, and that after me my Ummah will fall into trial." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to his Companions, among whom were Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar, Sayyiduna Hudhayfah, Sayyiduna Ammar and Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with them all). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was weeping. The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Why are you weeping?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril has told me that my son Husayn will be killed after me in the land of al-Taff. He brought me this earth, and he told me that his martyrdom will take place at this spot."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat in a much abridged form. At its beginning are these words: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had seated Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) on his thigh when Sayyiduna Jibril came to him." The chain in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, and the chain in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat contains narrators whom I do not know.

I became unmindful of him, and he crawled until he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), climbed onto his stomach and urinated on the stomach of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up. I got up, came to him and removed him from the stomach of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave my son." When he had finished urinating, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a vessel of water and sprinkled it over it. He said: "Water is to be sprinkled over the urine of a boy, and the urine of a girl is to be washed." Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and began to pray, holding him. When he went into bowing or prostration, he would set him down on the ground, and when he stood up, he would pick him up again. When he sat, he raised both his hands and began to supplicate. When he had completed the prayer, I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Today I saw you do something that I had not seen you do before." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril came to me and told me that my son will be killed. I said: 'Show me that place, then!' So he brought me some red earth."

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his wives: "Do not let this child cry." By this the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: It was the time of Sayyidah Umm Salamah's (may Allah be pleased with her) turn. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came down, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went inside and said to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her): "Do not let anyone come in to me." Meanwhile Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and when he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the house, he wanted to go in. Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) caught hold of him and picked him up in her lap, and began trying to quieten him, but when his crying grew stronger, Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) let him go. He went in and sat in the lap of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Your Ummah will kill this son of yours." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Will they kill him while they believe in me?" Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) replied: "Yes, they will kill him." Then Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) took some earth and said: "This will happen at such-and-such a place." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out holding Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) in his arms, and he was distressed. Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) thought that perhaps he was angry because the child had come in to him, so she said: "O Prophet of Allah! May I be sacrificed for you! You told us: 'Do not let this child cry,' and then you also ordered me not to let anyone come in to you. He came, and I let him go." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) no reply. He went out to his Companions, who were sitting, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My Ummah will kill this one." Among those present were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who were more at ease with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) than all the other people. They said: "O Prophet of Allah! Will they be believers?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! And this is the earth of his resting place." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) showed them that earth.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy, though there is weakness in some of its narrators.

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us with his colour changed, and he said: "I am Muhammad. I have been given the openings of speech and its conclusions. So obey me as long as I am among you, and when I am taken away, you must hold to the Book of Allah: treat as lawful what it makes lawful, and treat as unlawful what it makes unlawful. Death will come to you; it will come to you with ease and rest. This is something decreed beforehand by Allah Almighty. Trials will come to you like portions of the dark night; whenever one kind of trial goes, another will come. Prophethood will come to an end and kingship will come. May Allah Almighty have mercy on the one who takes it with its due right and leaves it just as he entered it. O Mu'adh! Hold on and count." (Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to enumerate names.) The narrator says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the fifth person, he said: "Yazid; may Allah Almighty not bless Yazid." Then tears came to his eyes, and he said: "I have been informed of the killing of Husayn, the earth of that place has been brought to me, and I have been told about his killer. By the One in whose Hand is my soul! Those among whom he is killed and who do not protect him, Allah Almighty will put discord between their hearts and breasts, set the worst of them over them, and split them into different factions." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Alas for the children of the family of Muhammad because of a caliph who will be made caliph, living in luxury and excess; he will kill my offspring and the offspring of my offspring. O Mu'adh! Count!" Then when he reached ten, he said: "Al-Walid, which is the name of Pharaoh; he will be a destroyer of the laws of Islam. Before him will be a man from his own household by whom Allah Almighty will draw His sword, and it will then not return to its sheath, and they will remain like this." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) interlaced his fingers and said: "After one hundred and twenty there will come a time in which time will pass quickly and killing and bloodshed will be abundant. In that period they will perish, and at that time a man from the descendants of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) will become ruler over them."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her)): "Do not let anyone come in to us." Meanwhile Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) came and went in. Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "This is Husayn." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him!" He climbed onto the neck of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and began playing with him, while the angel was watching. The angel asked: "O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Do you love him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, by Allah! I love him." The angel said: "But your Ummah will soon kill him. If you wish, I will show you his place." Then he stretched out his hand and took some earth in his fist. Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) took that earth and tied it up in her headscarf. The people used to think that this earth was from Karbala.

I thought: Perhaps this is one of his false statements. There was the leg of a dead donkey lying there, so I said to my slave: "Take the leg of this donkey, drive it into the ground at the place where he sat, and hide it." So he struck it in with a blow. As for Abdullah bin Ja'far, he is a man of amusement, ease and idle pursuits. And do not let the two sons of Abbas deceive you. As for me and Husayn, we are from you and you are from us. By Allah, I fear that these people will be given the upper hand over you because of their righteousness in their land and your corruption in yours, because they fulfil the trust while you betray it, they obey their ruler while you disobey yours, and they are united upon their falsehood while you are divided over your truth. Their rule will be prolonged until they leave nothing that Allah Almighty has made sacred without making it lawful, and their oppression will enter every house of mud and of hair, until one of you becomes their follower, the way a slave supports his master: when he is present he obeys him, and when he is absent he reviles him; until, in that situation, the most detached among you will be the one who holds the best opinion of Allah Almighty. Imam al-Sha'bi said: When Sayyiduna Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) intended to go to the land of Iraq, he wished to meet Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), so he asked about him. He was told that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was on his land. He went to him to bid him farewell and told him: "I want to go to Iraq." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Do not do so, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'I was given the choice between being a king-prophet or a servant-prophet. It was said to me: Be humble. So I chose to be a servant-prophet.' And you are a part of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so do not go." The narrator says: But Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) did not accept his advice, so Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), bidding him farewell, said: "I entrust you to Allah, as one who will be slain."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; the narrators of al-Bazzar are thiqat (trustworthy).

Muhammad bin al-Hasan said: When Umar bin Sa'd camped opposite Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), and he became certain that they would kill him, he stood up among his companions to deliver a sermon. He praised and extolled Allah Almighty and said: "You see the situation that has come upon us. The world has changed and become unrecognisable; its good has departed and swiftly turned away, until nothing of it remains except the dregs left in a vessel, a meagre living like an unwholesome pasture. Do you not see that the truth is not acted upon and falsehood is not forbidden? Let the believer long to meet Allah Almighty, for I regard death as nothing but happiness, and living with the oppressors as nothing but ruin."
(The narrator says:) Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred on the day of Ashura in the year 61, at al-Taff in Karbala. He was wearing a dark-coloured jubbah of khazz (silk and wool), he had dyed his hair black, and he was fifty-six years old at that time.

Al-Dahhak bin Uthman said: Sayyiduna Imam Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) set out for Kufah, being opposed to the rule of Yazid bin Mu'awiyah. Yazid bin Mu'awiyah wrote to Ubaydullah bin Ziyad, who was his appointed governor over Iraq: "News has reached me that Husayn has set out for Kufah. This trial has come in your time out of all times, and in your city out of all cities, and you, out of all the officials, have been tested with it. Through this trial you will either be freed, or you will return to being a slave, the way slaves are enslaved." So Ubaydullah bin Ziyad had Imam Husayn martyred and sent Imam Husayn's head to Yazid. When Imam Husayn's head was placed before him, he recited, as an illustration, these verses of al-Husayn bin Humam al-Murri: "We split the skulls of men who are dear to us, while they were the more undutiful and the more unjust."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that al-Dahhak did not live in the time of this event.
