Muhammad bin al-Hasan said: When Umar bin Sa'd camped opposite Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), and he became certain that they would kill him, he stood up among his companions to deliver a sermon. He praised and extolled Allah Almighty and said: "You see the situation that has come upon us. The world has changed and become unrecognisable; its good has departed and swiftly turned away, until nothing of it remains except the dregs left in a vessel, a meagre living like an unwholesome pasture. Do you not see that the truth is not acted upon and falsehood is not forbidden? Let the believer long to meet Allah Almighty, for I regard death as nothing but happiness, and living with the oppressors as nothing but ruin."
(The narrator says:) Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred on the day of Ashura in the year 61, at al-Taff in Karbala. He was wearing a dark-coloured jubbah of khazz (silk and wool), he had dyed his hair black, and he was fifty-six years old at that time.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. This narrator Muhammad bin al-Hasan is Ibn Zubalah, who is matruk (abandoned), and he did not live in the time of this incident.
