Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 15112

Nujayy al-Hadrami narrates that he was travelling with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was in charge of Sayyiduna Ali's (may Allah be pleased with him) water for purification. When they reached the place of Ninawa, while they were heading towards Siffin, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) called out loudly: "Be patient, O Abu Abdullah! Be patient, O Abu Abdullah, at the bank of the Euphrates!" I asked: "What is the reason for this?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "One day I came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and tears were flowing from his eyes. I said: 'O Prophet of Allah! Has someone angered you? Why are tears flowing from your eyes?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Jibril has just got up and left me; he told me that Husayn will be killed on the bank of the Euphrates. He said: Would you like me to let you smell some of its earth? I replied: Yes! So the angel stretched out his hand, took a handful of earth and gave it to me, and I could not control my eyes, and they began to flow.'"
Ahmad, Abu Ya'la, al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). The narrator Nujayy is not alone in reporting this narration.
