Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered Banu Abd al-Muttalib. Among them were some people who could eat an entire young goat and drink a large bucket of water. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prepared food for them from one mudd of grain. They ate it until they were full, and still the food remained just as it had been before, as though it had not even been touched. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a small cup (of water). They drank from it until they were satisfied, and the drink still remained as though it had not even been touched or drunk. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O children of Abd al-Muttalib! I have been sent to you specifically and to mankind in general, and you have seen this sign (that is, miracle) that you have seen. So which of you will pledge allegiance to me on this: that he will be my brother and my companion?" The narrator says: No one stood up before him (peace and blessings be upon him). I stood up before him, although I was the youngest of them all. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down!" This happened three times; each time it was I who stood up, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say to me: "Sit down!" Until, when it happened the third time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on my hand.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When this verse was revealed: "And warn your nearest relatives!", the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali! Cook a leg of goat with a sa' of grain, and gather Banu Hashim for me." At that time their number was forty, or one short of forty. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for the food and placed it in front of them. They ate it and were full, although among them was a person who could eat an entire jadh'ah (young animal) along with its curry. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed the cup, and they drank from it until they were satisfied; the narrator says: that is, they were satisfied by drinking milk. Some of them said: "We have never seen magic like this." The narrators think that it was Abu Lahab who said this. (The next day) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali! Prepare a leg of goat with a sa' of grain, and prepare a cup of milk." The narrator says: Those people ate just as they had eaten on the first day, and drank just as they had drunk the first time, and still the food remained just as it had remained the first time. They said the same: "We have not seen magic like today's." (Then one day) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali! Prepare a leg of goat with a sa' of grain, and get a vessel of milk ready." So I did so. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali! Gather Banu Hashim for me." I gathered them, and they ate and drank. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to them and said: "Which of you will pay off my debt on my behalf?" The narrator says: I remained silent, and the people also remained silent. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated his words, and I said: "O Messenger of Allah! I will." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You, O Ali! You, O Ali!"
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and these words of the narration are his; Ahmad recorded it in abridged form, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat in abridged form. The narrators of Ahmad and of one of al-Bazzar's two chains are the narrators of the Sahih, except Sharik, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).
Hadith Takhrij«
Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I prepared enough food for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to suffice the two of them. I brought it to them both, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Go and bring thirty of the nobles of the Ansar to me!" This weighed heavily on me, and I said: "I have nothing more than this." I showed no attention to it, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and bring me thirty of the nobles of the Ansar!" I called those men and they came. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Eat!" Those people ate the food until they had their fill, they bore witness that he is the Messenger of Allah, and then they pledged allegiance to him before leaving. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and call sixty of the nobles of the Ansar to me!" Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) says: By Allah! I was more willing to call the sixty than I had been to call the thirty. Anyway, I called them and brought them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wait!" Then those people ate the food until they had their fill and were about to leave; they bore witness that he is the Messenger of Allah, and they also pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) before leaving. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and call ninety of the Ansar to me!" The narrator says: I was more willing to call the ninety and the sixty than I had been to call the thirty. I called them, and they ate the food until they had finished; then they bore witness that he is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then they pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) before leaving. The narrator says: So one hundred and eighty men ate my food, all of them from the Ansar.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.
Sayyiduna Abu Hubaysh al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the expedition of Tihamah. When we reached the place of Usfan, the Companions came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah! We are suffering from hunger; grant us permission concerning the mounts, so that we may (slaughter them and) eat (their meat)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Very well." Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to know of this, so he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Prophet of Allah! What is this you are doing? You have permitted the people to slaughter the mounts? Then on what will they ride?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn al-Khattab! Then what is your opinion?" He said: "My view is that you instruct the people to bring whatever remains of their travel provisions, then you gather it in a cloth and pray to Allah Almighty for it." (The narrator says:) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the people, and they put their leftover provisions in a cloth. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for them, then he said: "Bring your vessels!" Every one of them filled his vessel. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order to set off. When they had gone ahead, rain began, and they made camp; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made camp and the people made camp with him, and the people drank the water that came down from the sky. Then three people came; two of them sat with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the third turned away and left. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I tell you about these three people? One of them felt shy before Allah Almighty, so Allah Almighty accepted his shyness; the second came as one repenting, so Allah Almighty accepted his repentance; and the third turned away, so Allah Almighty also turned away from him."
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani (in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat) recorded it, and he (al-Tabarani) recorded these additional words: "O Ibn al-Khattab! What is your opinion?" He said: "My view is that you instruct the people, though your opinion is better." And in this narration he also recorded these additional words: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made camp and the people made camp with him, and the people and their horses drank water; then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed them and mentioned three people." After this the narrator mentioned the whole narration, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were taking part in a military expedition with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we said: "O Messenger of Allah! The enemy has drawn near; they will be well-fed while we will be hungry." The Ansar said: "Should we not slaughter our camels? That way we will feed the people." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has extra food, let him bring it." So one man brought a mudd, another brought a sa', and another brought more or less than that. All that was in the army came, altogether, to a little more than twenty sa'. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat beside it and prayed for blessing, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Start taking, but do not snatch!" One man would fill his bag, another would fill his sack, and they put the provisions into their vessels, until one man even tied the sleeve of his shirt and filled it. When those people had finished taking it, the food was just as it had been before. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty, and that I am the Messenger of Allah. Any servant who comes with this word while truly believing in it, Allah Almighty will protect him from the heat of Hell."
Abu Ya'la recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains Asim bin Ubaydullah al-Umari, whom al-Ijli declared thiqah (trustworthy) and a group declared da'if (weak); the remaining narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Before this, in the Book of Faith, in the first chapter, the hadith narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Amrah (may Allah be pleased with him) has already passed.
Sayyiduna al-Nu'man bin Muqarrin (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We, four hundred people of the tribe of Muzaynah, came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave instructions concerning us. One of those present said: "O Messenger of Allah! We do not have enough grain to give them as provisions for the journey." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Give them provisions for the journey!" He said: "I only have some leftover dates, and I do not think they will be of any use to them." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and give them!" So he took us to an upper room, and there were dates there as large as a young ash-coloured camel. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Take!" All the people began taking according to their need, and I was the last of those taking. The narrator says: I looked, and I did not notice anything missing from the place of the dates, although four hundred men had taken dates from there.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, and Ahmad's narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Sayyiduna Dukayn bin Sa'id al-Khath'ami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); we were four hundred and forty people, and we asked him for food. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Get up and give to them." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I only have enough dates to suffice me and the children for some time." The narrator Waki' says: In the idiom of the Arabs, the word "qayz" means four months. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Get up and give to them." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! I obey your command." The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) got up and we got up with him. He took us up to his upper room, took a key out from his side, and opened the door. Sayyiduna Dukayn (may Allah be pleased with him) says: In that room there were dates like a young camel. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Take!" The narrator says: Each one of us took as many dates as he wished, according to his need. The narrator says: When I looked, I was among the last of those people to take, and it was as though we had not reduced those dates at all. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Abu Dawud recorded a part of this narration.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, and the narrators of both of them are the narrators of the Sahih.
Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was among the People of the Suffah. One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a loaf of bread and broke it into a bowl. He poured hot water into it, then he prepared fat in it, then he began to pound it, and then he made it into tharid and raised it up from the ground. Then he said: "Go and bring ten people to me, you being the tenth of them." I brought them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Eat, and eat from its lower part; do not eat from its top part, for blessing will descend upon its top part." They ate from it until they were full. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Ibn Majah recorded the last part of it.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was one of the People of the Suffah. My companions complained of hunger and said: "O Wathilah! Go to the Messenger of Allah and bring something for us to eat." I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! My companions have complained of hunger." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "Do you have anything?" She said: "O Messenger of Allah! I only have a few pieces of bread." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring that very thing to me." She brought a bag. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a bowl and put the bread into the bowl, then he began making tharid with his blessed hand, and that food began to increase until the bowl was full. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Wathilah! Go and bring ten of my Companions, you being the tenth of them." I went and brought ten of my companions, with myself as the tenth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down and start eating, taking the name of Allah. Eat from its sides and do not eat from its top part, for blessing descends upon its top part." Those people began eating until they were full, and then they got up, while the bowl held as much food as it had held before. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again began smoothing it with his blessed hand until it began to increase, until the bowl was full. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Wathilah! Go and bring ten of your companions." I brought ten people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down." They sat down and ate until they were full, and stood up. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and bring ten of your companions to me." I went again and brought ten people, and they did the same. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is anyone left?" I said: "Yes, ten people are left." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and bring them." I went and brought them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down." They sat down and began eating until they were full, then they stood up, and the bowl held as much food as it had held before. Then he said: "O Wathilah! Take this to Aishah."
In one narration the words are: I was in the Suffah, and they were twenty men. After this the narrator transmitted the narration as before, except that in it he recorded these words: the household said that there was a piece of bread here and a little milk. Al-Tabarani recorded all of these narrations, and its chain is hasan (good).
Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I entered the mosque and saw signs of hunger on the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So I came to Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her); the narrator says: she is the mother of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him); she had earlier been the wife of Malik, the father of Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) (then she had married Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him)). I said: "O Umm Sulaym, I have sensed signs of hunger on the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Do you have anything?" She said: "I have a little something," indicating with her palm. I said to her: "Prepare that very thing, and prepare it well." Then I sent Anas to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I said: "Invite the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by whispering in his ear." When Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O my son! Has your father sent you, and has he invited us?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Set off, taking the name of Allah." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) hurried back to Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is coming to you along with some people." The narrator says: I met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) near the door, and I said: "O Messenger of Allah! What have you done to us? I had only sensed signs of hunger on your face, so we prepared food for you so that you could eat something." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go inside and receive good news." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the food, put it into a bowl with his blessed hand, then began to set it right. Then he asked: "Is there anything?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant some curry. They brought their small skin container in which there was a little something, or perhaps nothing at all. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) squeezed ghee out of it with his blessed hand, then he said: "Keep bringing in ten men at a time to me." All of those people kept eating and becoming full. Regarding the extra food that was left over, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You and your dependants eat it." So they too ate and were full.
Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it, and he (al-Tabarani) recorded these additional words: "They numbered about one hundred." The narrators of both narrations are the narrators of the Sahih.
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One day I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and found him sitting with his Companions, talking with them, and he had tied a band over his stomach with a stone placed on it. I asked one of his Companions: "Why has he tied a band over his stomach?" He replied: "Because of hunger." I went to Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the husband of Sayyidah Umm Sulaym bint Milhan (may Allah be pleased with her), and said: "O my dear father! I have seen that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has tied a band over his stomach. I asked one of his Companions about it, and he told me that it is because of hunger." So Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to my mother and asked: "Is there anything?" She said: "I have some pieces of bread and some dates. Now, if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) comes to us, we will be able to feed him, but if someone comes with him, then the food will fall short." Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Anas! Go and stand near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gets up, wait until the people disperse, and whoever follows him also disperses, until, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is standing at the threshold of his door, then say: My father invites you." The narrator says: I did just that. When I said: "My father invites you," the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "O people! You come too." The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took my hand and held it firmly, and he came with his Companions until, when he got near our house, he let go of my hand. I entered the house in distress; the distress was because of the large number of people coming with him. I said: "O my dear father! I said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) just what you had told me, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) invited his Companions too, and he is coming to you with them." Sayyiduna Abu Talhah went out towards him and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I sent Anas only to invite you alone; I do not have enough food to satisfy these people whom I see." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go inside; Allah Almighty will satisfy these people with what you have." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came inside with me and said: "Gather whatever you have and then present it." Those who had come with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat outside. Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Whatever we had, which was bread and dates, I presented, and we placed it on our mat. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for blessing in it, then he said: "Bring eight people in to me." I brought eight people in. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his palm over the food and said: "Start eating, taking the name of Allah." So those people began eating from between his fingers until they were full. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me, and I brought eight more people. This continued until eighty men had come in, and all of them ate until all of them were full. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me, called my mother, and called Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: "You eat too." We also ate until we too were full. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed hand and said: "O Umm Sulaym! Compared to when you presented the food, what difference has come to your food now?" She said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! Had I not seen these people eating, I would have said that nothing has decreased from our food." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: A hadith narrated by Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) is mentioned in the Sahih, without this context.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Usamah bin Zayd bin Aslam, and he is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her), who is the mother of Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) was the stepfather of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: "O Umm Sulaym! Do you have anything? I passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was teaching Surah al-Nisa' to the People of the Suffah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had tied a stone over his stomach because of hunger." Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: "I have a little barley; I will grind it." The narrator says: After this he mentioned the whole hadith, in which, further on, are these words: So they set off at that time, and they numbered eighty. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was holding my hand. When I got near the house, I pulled my hand free from the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Inside the house, Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) began coming after me, throwing stones at me and saying: "You will put me to shame before the Messenger of Allah!" Then he went out before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about the situation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the people to sit down, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went inside. We brought the pieces of bread to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is there any curry?" Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Messenger of Allah, we have a container which I and Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) have already squeezed out." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring that very thing! If three people squeeze it, that is more effective than two squeezing it." They brought that container to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) squeezed it with his blessed hand, then prayed for blessing in it, then he said: "Call ten people to me!" Those people ate until they were full and began to belch. After this the narrator mentioned the whole hadith, which is mentioned in the Sahih without this context.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain is hasan (good).
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: My mother prepared some food and said to me: "Go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and invite him." I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and spoke to him in a whisper; I said: "My mother has prepared something." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "Get up." Fifty men got up with him, and they sat at the door. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell ten people at a time to come in." Those people kept eating and becoming full, and still as much food remained as there had been before.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Gather your companions to me." So I went after those people in the mosque and began waking them one by one. Then we came to the door of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we went inside. A bowl was placed in front of us, in which there would have been food cooked from about two mudds of barley. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: "Start eating, taking the name of Allah." When that vessel was placed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has nothing other than what you see." The narrator says: We ate until we were full, and still some food was left over, although at that time we were about seventy to eighty people. The narrator says: I asked Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "When you finished eating, what was its state?" He said: "It was just as much as it had been when it was placed, except that the marks of fingers could be seen in it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): One night I missed dinner with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it also did not happen that any of my companions invited me. I prayed the Isha prayer, then I intended to sleep, but I could not sleep; then I intended to offer voluntary prayer, but I could not do that either. There I saw a man near the chamber of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I came to him, and it was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who was praying. He prayed, then he leaned against the pillar towards which he used to pray, and he said: "Who is this? Is it Abu Hurayrah?" I said: "Yes!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you miss dinner with us tonight?" I said: "Yes!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go home and say: 'Give the food that you have.'" So they gave me a bowl in which there was 'asidah (a thick porridge) made with dates. I brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and placed it in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call the people who are in the mosque." I thought to myself: woe to me, because the food was little, and woe to me also if I disobey the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So I came to a man who was asleep; I woke him and said to him: "Answer the invitation." Then I came to another man who was praying, and I said: "Answer the invitation," until they gathered with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his fingers in that food and pressed its sides, then he said: "Begin eating with the name of Allah." They ate until they were full, and I also ate until I too was full. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Hurayrah! Take it and return it to the family of Muhammad, for the family of Muhammad has no food other than this that any living being could eat; this food too was sent to us as a gift by a man from the Ansar." The narrator says: So I took the bowl and lifted it, and it was just as it had been when I placed it, except that there were the marks of the fingers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), who is the honoured wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and said: "O daughter of Huyayy! Do you have anything (that can be eaten)? For I am hungry." I said: "By Allah, no, O Messenger of Allah! There are only two mudd of flour." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Prepare that, then." Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I put it in the cooking pot and began to cook it. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, it is cooked." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you know whether there is anything in the vessel of the daughter of Abu Bakr?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah! I do not know." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went himself until he went to the house of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). He said: "O daughter of Abu Bakr! Is there anything in your vessel?" She replied: "There is nothing in it; there will only be a little ghee." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought it himself, and he squeezed its two edges into the cooking pot, until I saw what was coming out. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his blessed hand and said: "With the name of Allah, go and call your sisters, for I know that they too must be feeling what I am feeling." So I brought the other pure wives, and we ate until we were full. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and entered, then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and entered, then another man came. Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: All of them ate until they were all full, and food was still left over.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Hudayj bin Mu'awiyah, who has been declared trustworthy despite his weakness, and the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyidah Umm Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: We had a goat. I collected its ghee in a skin container and filled it. Then I sent it with Rabibah. I said: "O Rabibah, deliver this vessel to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) may use this ghee as a condiment." Rabibah went and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and she said: "O Messenger of Allah! This is a vessel of ghee that Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) has sent to you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Empty her vessel and give it back to her." The vessel was emptied and given to me, and I set off. When Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) came and saw that the vessel was full and drops were dripping from it, Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Rabibah! Did I not instruct you to take it to the Messenger of Allah?" Rabibah said: "I did so. If you do not believe me, go yourself and ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." So Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) went, and Rabibah was with her. She said: "O Messenger of Allah! I sent a vessel of ghee to you with this girl." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She did so; she brought it." Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "By the One who sent you with guidance and the religion of truth, that vessel is full, and drops of ghee are dripping from it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "Are you surprised that Allah Almighty has given you to eat just as you gave His Prophet to eat? Eat from it and feed others too." Sayyidah Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I returned home and divided it into so many of our vessels, and even then so much remained in that vessel that we kept using it as a condiment for one (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are) two months.
Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it, except that he (al-Tabarani) gave the woman's name as Zaynab in place of Rabibah. Their chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Ziyad al-Tarjami, who is al-Yashkuri, and he is a kadhdhab (liar).
Sayyidah Umm Malik al-Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that she brought a vessel of ghee to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he squeezed it out; then he returned that vessel to the woman. When the woman went back, the vessel was full. Then the woman came back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Has some command been revealed concerning me?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What has happened, O Umm Malik?" She said: "Why did you return my gift?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about this. He said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, I squeezed it so much that I began to feel shy." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Umm Malik! Congratulations to you! This is a blessing which Allah Almighty has given as a hastened reward." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught that woman that after every prayer she should say Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah) ten times, al-Hamdu lillah (Praise be to Allah) ten times, and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) ten times.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator who is not named, and a narrator Ata bin al-Sa'ib, who suffered from mental confusion (ikhtilat), and the remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.
Sayyidah Umm Aws al-Bahziyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that she collected ghee and put it in a vessel, then she presented it as a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted it and took what was in it, then he supplicated for blessing for that woman, and the vessel was returned to the woman, and it was full of ghee. The woman thought that perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not accepted it. She came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and she was weeping. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell her the whole situation." So that woman ate that ghee for the rest of the life of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), throughout the entire caliphate of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), in the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and in the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), until, when the fighting took place between Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), it still remained up to that time.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ismah bin Sulayman, and I do not know him, and the remaining narrators of this report have been declared trustworthy.
Sayyiduna Hamzah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The food of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to go around among the hands of his Companions; one night it would be one person's responsibility, and one night another person's responsibility. The narrator says: One night it was my turn. I prepared the food of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I left the ghee vessel as it was and did not tie its mouth. I took the food to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Behind me the vessel moved, and the ghee that was in it poured out. I said: "Has the ghee of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) food been spilled at my hands?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring it." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! I am not able to." When I came back to my place, the ghee vessel was there, and it was saying: "Qab, qab." I said: "Stop! What was extra has poured out, and still some has remained in it." Then I examined it and found that it was full up to its chest. I took it and brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you had left it as it was, it would have filled up to its mouth, and then its mouth would have been tied."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Another route of it has already passed in the chapter on the Expedition of Tabuk, and in it this is mentioned: "If you had left it as it was, ghee would have been flowing in the valley." The narrators of this route, which is here, have been declared trustworthy.
Sayyiduna Mas'ud bin Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I sent a goat to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then I went away for some task. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent half of it back to those people. When I returned to Umm Khunas, the narrator says, that is, returned to his wife, she had meat with her. I said: "O Umm Khunas! Where has this meat come from?" She said: "Your Khalil (dearest friend) (peace and blessings be upon him) has sent this to us from the goat that you sent to him." Sayyiduna Mas'ud bin Khalid said: "Then why have you not fed it to the members of your household?" The woman said: "This is what they have left over; I have already fed all of them." (The narrator says:) yet they were so many people that even if two or three goats were slaughtered for them, they would not suffice them.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man from the Ansar came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned a guest before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that he be given half a wasq of barley. They began eating from it, and they kept eating it for a period of time. Then one day they took it and measured it, in order to see how much was left. Then, shortly afterwards, it ran out. That man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you measure it? If you had not measured it, it would have remained for such and such a period (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) it would have remained for your whole life."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Abi Layla, and he is thiqah (trustworthy), yet there is weakness in him.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask him about something (or to ask him for something). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came home to get something for him, and he found a morsel in one of his chambers. He took it and divided it into portions, then he placed his blessed hand upon it and then said: "O Bedouin, eat." So the Bedouin ate, and still some food was left over from it. The Bedouin would raise his head, look at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and say: "You are a righteous man." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Accept Islam." But he refused to accept Islam, and he kept saying only: "You are a righteous man."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, al-Sari bin Asim, and he is a kadhdhab (liar).
