Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: One day in the morning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is there no water?" The people said: "No!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is there a water-skin?" The people brought a water-skin, and it was placed in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he placed his hand on it, then he spread his fingers apart, and water gushed out from them just as it had gushed out when Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) struck with his staff; that water gushed from the fingers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Bilal! Announce the ablution to the people!" The people came and began performing ablution with the water coming out from between the fingers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) also drank it. When those people had performed ablution, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in the morning prayer. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat for the people and said: "O people! Who is the most astonishing in terms of faith?" The people said: "The angels." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How so? The angels hold faith while they are witnessing the actual matter." Then the people said: "O Messenger of Allah! The prophets." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How so? Why would the prophets not believe, when revelation descends upon them from the heavens?" The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Your Companions." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why would my Companions not believe, when they see what they see (that is, they see the miracles)? The most astonishing in terms of faith will be the people who come after me; they will believe in me although they have not seen me, and they will affirm me although they have not seen me, and those people will be my brothers."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat in abridged form; al-Bazzar also recorded it in abridged form, and Ahmad also recorded it, but he recorded these words: "Then springs of water burst forth from between the fingers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." The chain of this narration contains Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, who had suffered from confusion (ikhtilat).

Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were travelling with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when we came to a well in which there was little water. The narrator says: Six people went down into it, and I was the sixth of them; the well was dry. The narrator says: A bucket was lowered to us, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was at the edge of that well. The narrator says: We filled that bucket half, or close to two thirds, then the bucket was lifted and taken to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I tried with my vessel, wishing I could find something to pour down my throat, but I found nothing. That bucket was raised to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dipped his hand into it, then recited whatever Allah willed, then the bucket was sent back to us along with the water that was in it. The narrator says: Then I saw that the last of us to come out was pulled out by his garment, for fear that he might drown in it. The narrator says: That is, water then gushed forth from there; that is, it flowed like a river. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: This narration is mentioned in the Sahih in a greatly abridged form, concerning the expedition of al-Hudaybiyah.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, and the narrators of both of them are the narrators of the Sahih.
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) equipped an army against the polytheists, among whom were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave his orders to the two of them and to all the people, saying to them: "You must travel swiftly, for between you and the polytheists there is a watering place. If the polytheists reach that place first, it will be hard on the people, and the people will suffer severe thirst: you, your animals and your riding camels will all suffer thirst." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed behind with eight people, he himself being the ninth. He said to his Companions: "Would you like us to halt for a little while at night, and then we will catch up with the people?" The people said: "Very well." They halted at night, and they woke up from the heat of the sun. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions woke up, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Get up and relieve yourselves!" They did so, then they came back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Does any of you have water?" A man said: "O Messenger of Allah! There is a vessel with a little water in it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring it!" That man brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed both his palms over it and prayed for blessing, then he said to his Companions: "Come forward and perform ablution!" The people came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began pouring water for them until they had performed ablution. One of them gave the adhan and the iqamah, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in prayer. Then he said to the man with the vessel: "Look after your vessel carefully; something remarkable will come of it." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions mounted, ahead of the people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "What do you think the people have done?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among them are Abu Bakr and Umar, and they will guide the people." Then they reached the people. The polytheists had already reached the water first; this was hard on the people, and they were suffering severe thirst, and their riding camels and animals were thirsty too. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Where is the man with the vessel?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Here he is." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring your vessel!" He brought it, and there was a little water in it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to all of them: "Come forward and drink!" The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began pouring water for them, until all of them had drunk, had watered their riding camels and animals, and had filled every vessel and every small and large water-skin they had. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions set out towards the polytheists. Allah Almighty sent a wind which drove the polytheists back. Allah Almighty sent down His help and made it possible to turn them back in flight. The Muslims killed many of them, took many prisoners, and gained much spoils of war from them. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the people returned, they had abundant goods and were in good condition.
Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains Sa'id bin Sulaym al-Dabbi, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy), and he says: He makes mistakes; others declared him da'if (weak). The remaining narrators of this narration are the narrators of the Sahih.
Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla transmits the statement of his father: We took part in a military expedition with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we were struck by severe thirst. We complained of this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is there any leftover water in a vessel?" A man brought him some leftover water in a vessel. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dug a hole in the ground and placed a mat (or a piece of leather) over it, then he placed his palm on the ground and said to the man with the vessel: "Taking the name of Allah, pour the water over my palm!" He did so. Sayyiduna Abu Layla (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw water gush forth from between the fingers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), until all the people had their fill, and they also watered their riding camels. Its chain contains Khalid bin Nafi' al-Ash'ari, whom Imam Abu Zur'ah, Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i declared da'if (weak); Abu Hatim says: He is not strong; his hadith may be written down. Imam Ahmad narrated from him, and it is well known that all of Imam Ahmad's teachers are thiqat (trustworthy) in his view. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Before this, the hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Ziyad bin al-Harith al-Suda'i (may Allah be pleased with him) and the hadith narrated by Sayyiduna Hibban bin Buhh al-Suda'i (may Allah be pleased with him) have already passed in the chapter on the dislike of holding authority.
Sayyiduna Abu Raja' narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out until he entered the orchard of one of the Ansar, who was irrigating it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "If I water this orchard of yours, what will you give me in return?" He said: "I am trying my utmost to water it, but I do not have the strength for it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Will you give me a hundred dates, which I will choose from your dates?" He said: "Very well." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the large bucket and watered the orchard, until the man began to say: "You will flood my orchard!" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a hundred dates. The narrator says: He (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions ate those dates until all of them were full, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned a full hundred dates to him, just as he had taken them from him.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy; this narration is recorded within the biographical entry of Abu Imran.
