Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Roasted goat meat was prepared for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it was brought to him. He said: "O Abu Rafi'! Hand me a foreleg." I handed it to him. Then he said: "O Abu Rafi'! Hand me a foreleg." I handed it to him. Then he said: "Abu Rafi', hand me a foreleg." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! A goat has only two forelegs." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you had remained silent, you would have kept handing me a foreleg from it for as long as I kept asking for it." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) liked the meat of the foreleg.
In one narration the words are: A goat was given to him (that is, to Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him)) as a gift. He put its meat in the cooking pot. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the house and asked: "O Abu Rafi'! What is this?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah! This is goat meat that was given to us as a gift; we are cooking it in the pot." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hand me the foreleg."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it through various routes, and in some of its routes the words are: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to prepare goat meat for him, so I prepared it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat in abridged form, and one of the two chains of Ahmad is hasan (good).
Sayyidah Salma (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a goat to Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him); I think this was on the occasion of the Battle of the Trench. Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) cooked it, then placed it in a container, then set off with it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met him while he was returning from the Trench. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hand me a foreleg!" I handed it to him. Then he said: "O Abu Rafi'! Hand me a foreleg." I handed it to him. Then he said: "O Abu Rafi'! Hand me a foreleg." I handed it to him. Then he said: "O Abu Rafi'! Hand me a foreleg." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! A goat has only two forelegs." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you had remained silent, you would have kept handing it to me for as long as I kept asking you for it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyiduna Abu Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he prepared a cooking pot for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which meat had been cooked. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hand me a foreleg!" I handed it to him. He said: "Hand me its foreleg." I handed it to him. He said: "Hand me its foreleg." He said: "O Prophet of Allah! How many forelegs does a goat have?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul, if you had remained silent, you would have kept giving a foreleg for as long as I kept asking for it."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, and the narrators of both are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Shahr bin Hawshab, and more than one scholar has declared him thiqah (trustworthy).
Yahya bin Abi Ishaq narrates: A man from Banu Ghifar told me in the gathering of Salim bin Abdullah that so-and-so narrated this hadith to him: "Once food, bread and meat, was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: 'Hand me a foreleg.' A foreleg was handed to him, and he ate it. Yahya says: To my knowledge, he related it like this: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Hand me a foreleg.' Then a foreleg was handed to him, and he ate it. Then he said: 'Hand me a foreleg.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah! There are only two forelegs.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'By your father! If you had remained silent, I would have kept being handed a foreleg from it for as long as I kept asking for it.'"
Ahmad recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator who is not named.
