Al-Dahhak bin Muzahim narrates: Nafi' bin al-Azraq asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about this statement of Allah Almighty: "al-Samad". He said: As for the word "Ahad", we know it; what is meant by "Samad"? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The One to whom recourse is made in all matters. He asked: Did the Arabs know this meaning before the Book was revealed to Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: Yes! Have you not heard this verse of al-Asadiyyah: "Lo! The herald of death should bring Banu Asad the news of Amr bin Mas'ud, who was a chief and the one to whom recourse was made." Nafi' said: You have spoken the truth.

Another man was reciting Surah al-Ikhlas, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Because of it, Paradise has become obligatory for this man.

Al-Tabarani and Ahmad recorded it. He said: It is reported from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Mu'adh bin Anas al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he did not say that it is reported from his father, and it appears that these words have dropped out. The chains of both narrations contain Rishdin bin Sa'd and Zabban; both of them are da'if (weak), and both have been given a weak authentication.

Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and said: It is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) only with this chain. Its chain contains Nasr bin Hammad al-Warraq, who is matruk (abandoned).

Hamzah bin Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the scholars of the Jews: I have taken a covenant in the mosque of our forefathers Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and Sayyiduna Isma'il (peace be upon him). Then he set out towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who was in Makkah at the time. He arrived there when the people were returning from Hajj. He found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at Mina with people around him, and he stood with the people. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at him, he said: Are you Abdullah bin Salam? The narrator says: I said: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Come near! So I came near. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I ask you by Allah, O Abdullah bin Salam! Have you not found me in the Torah as the Messenger of Allah? I said to him: Describe the attributes of our Lord to us! The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came and stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and recited these verses: "Say: He is Allah, the One; Allah, the Self-Sufficient; He has not begotten anyone, nor was He begotten, nor is there anyone equal to Him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this surah to us, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah Almighty, and that you are the Messenger of Allah. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Then the narrator mentioned the full hadith, which will come in full later in the chapter on the virtues of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him).

Al-Tirmidhi recorded it in abridged form, only without Ayat al-Kursi, and reported that Surah al-Ikhlas is one quarter of the Qur'an.

The narrator says: Meanwhile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was listening to what Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) was saying. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Abu Ayyub has spoken correctly.
