Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 11529

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When this surah was revealed: "May the hands of Abu Lahab perish", Abu Lahab's wife came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was also with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at that time. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw that woman, he said: O Messenger of Allah! She is a foul-mouthed woman, and I fear she will harm you; it would be better if you got up. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: She will not be able to see me. The woman came and said: O Abu Bakr! Where is your master? He has satirised me. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He does not compose poetry. The woman said: In my view you are a truthful man. Then the woman went away. I said: O Messenger of Allah! How was this matter averted? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: An angel kept screening me from her with his wings.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded something similar, except that he reported these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A barrier will come between me and her." Then the woman came and stopped by Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Abu Bakr! Your master has satirised us. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No! By the Lord of this building, he neither composes poetry nor recites it. Al-Bazzar said: It is hasan (good) in its chain. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: But it contains Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, who suffered from mental confusion (ikhtilat).
