Hamzah bin Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the scholars of the Jews: I have taken a covenant in the mosque of our forefathers Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and Sayyiduna Isma'il (peace be upon him). Then he set out towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who was in Makkah at the time. He arrived there when the people were returning from Hajj. He found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at Mina with people around him, and he stood with the people. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at him, he said: Are you Abdullah bin Salam? The narrator says: I said: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Come near! So I came near. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I ask you by Allah, O Abdullah bin Salam! Have you not found me in the Torah as the Messenger of Allah? I said to him: Describe the attributes of our Lord to us! The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came and stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and recited these verses: "Say: He is Allah, the One; Allah, the Self-Sufficient; He has not begotten anyone, nor was He begotten, nor is there anyone equal to Him." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this surah to us, and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah Almighty, and that you are the Messenger of Allah. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Then the narrator mentioned the full hadith, which will come in full later in the chapter on the virtues of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him).
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that Hamzah did not live in the time of his grandfather Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him).
