Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of the Battle of Hunayn, a young man of ours from the Ansar said: "Today we will not be overcome because of small numbers." Then it happened that when we faced the enemy, we were routed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding his mule; Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) was holding its reins, and the Prophet's uncle, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), was holding its stirrup. We were in a valley whose ground was soft, and dust rose up so that none of us could see his own palm. Meanwhile someone was sensed approaching, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stop! Who are you?" He replied: "I am Abu Bakr; may my father and mother be sacrificed for you." He had more than ten wounds on his body. Then another person appeared approaching, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stop! Who are you?" He said: "I am Umar bin al-Khattab; may my father and mother be sacrificed for you." He too had more than ten wounds on his body. Then a person appeared approaching who had more than twenty wounds on his body. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who are you?" He said: "I am Uthman bin Affan; may my father and mother be sacrificed for you." Then another person was sensed approaching who had more than ten wounds on his body. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stop! Who are you?" He said: "I am Ali bin Abi Talib; may my father and mother be sacrificed for you." Then the people came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is there no man with a loud voice who will go and call out among the people?" So a man went and shouted. As soon as his voice reached the people's ears, they came back. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) charged, and the Muslims charged with him, and the polytheists were routed. Durayd bin al-Simmah withdrew onto a small hill, or a mound, with about six hundred men. One of his companions said to him: "By Allah, I see a detachment approaching." Durayd said: "Describe them to me." They said: "Their marks are such-and-such, and their appearance is such-and-such." He said: "There is no harm for you; this is Quda'ah going after the enemy." They said: "By Allah, we see a rough detachment approaching." He said: "Describe them to me." They said: "Their marks are such-and-such, and their appearance is such-and-such." He said: "There is no harm for you; these are Sulaym." Then they said: "We see a horseman approaching." He said: "Woe to you! Is he alone?" They said: "He is alone." He said: "Describe him to me." They said: "He has a black turban wrapped around his head." Durayd said: "By Allah, that is al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam, and by Allah, he will kill you and drive you out of this place of yours." The narrator says: Then al-Zubayr turned toward them and said: "Why are these people here?" He went on, together with those who followed him, and killed three hundred there, and he cut off the head of Durayd bin al-Simmah and placed it in front of himself.
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains Ali bin Asim bin Suhayb, who is da'if (weak) because of his many mistakes and his persistence in them, though he has been declared trustworthy. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When we came to the valley of Hunayn, we entered one of the valleys of Tihamah, which lay in a hollow and required descending into it. He also said: At that time it was the darkness of early morning, and the people had set up ambushes for us inside that valley; they were gathered on its sides and in its narrow places. They had assembled and were ready. The narrator says: By Allah, we did not even realise it; we were descending when some detachments attacked us, and the people turned back. They went back in retreat, and no one turned toward anyone. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) moved to the right side, then he said: "Come to me, O people! Come to me, O people! I am the Messenger of Allah. I am Muhammad bin Abdullah." The narrator says: It was of no avail, until they became entangled with one another and the people scattered here and there, except that with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) there were some men from the Muhajirun, the Ansar and his household, who were not many in number. Among those who stood firm with him were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and from his household Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), his son Sayyiduna al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Ayman bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the son of Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her), and Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both). The narrator says: A man from the tribe of Hawazin was riding his red camel; in his hand was a black flag on the end of his long spear. He was in front of the people, and Hawazin were behind him. When anyone reached him, he would strike with his spear, and when the people got away from him, he would raise it for those behind him, and they would follow him.

Ibn Ishaq narrates: Asim bin Umar bin Qatadah transmitted, from Abd al-Rahman bin Jabir, this statement of his father Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both): Meanwhile there was a man from the tribe of Hawazin who was their standard-bearer; he was riding his camel and doing what he was doing. Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and a man from the Ansar advanced toward him. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him from behind and struck the camel's hind legs, and it fell down on its haunches. The Ansari man leapt at the man and struck him, cutting off his foot at the middle of the shin, and he fell from his saddle. And the people fought fiercely. By Allah, the people had not yet returned (from their rout) when they found the captives bound in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it. Abu Ya'la added these words: When the rout occurred, Kaladah, who was the brother of Safwan bin Umayyah and was a polytheist at that time, during the period of respite the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had set for him, shouted: "Today the magic has been undone!" Safwan said to him: "Be quiet, may Allah break your mouth! By Allah, that a man from Quraysh should be my master is dearer to me than that a man from Hawazin should be my master."
Al-Bazzar recorded it in abridged form. Its chain contains Ibn Ishaq, who explicitly stated that he heard it directly, and this is in the narration of Abu Ya'la. The remaining narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: The people turned away, leaving the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and eighty men from the Muhajirun and the Ansar remained with him. We stepped back about eighty paces, but we did not turn our backs. These are the people upon whom Allah Almighty sent down tranquillity. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding his mule, advancing forward. As he was advancing with his mule, its saddle slipped. I said to him: "Rise up, may Allah Almighty raise you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hand me a fistful of dust." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw that dust at their faces, and it filled their eyes. Then he asked: "Where are the Muhajirun and the Ansar?" I said: "They are here." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call out to them." I called out to them, and they came with their swords in their hands, like shooting stars, and then the polytheists turned their backs and fled.
Ahmad, al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih, except for al-Harith bin Hasirah, whose case is different, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that this call be made: "O people of Surah al-Baqarah! O company of the Ansar!" Then the Banu al-Harith bin al-Khazraj were called. When they heard the call, they came. By Allah, I can only liken them to camels coming to their young. When they arrived, the fighting intensified. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now the furnace has become hot." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a handful of white pebbles and threw them, and said: "By the Lord of the Ka'bah, they are routed." The narrator says: On that day Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) fought most fiercely of all in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn, the people scattered, leaving the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Only one man remained with him, whose name was Zayd; he was holding the reins of the Prophet's mule, al-Shahba'. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Woe to you! Call the people." Zayd called out loudly: "O people! This is the Messenger of Allah calling you." But no one came. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call the Ansar." He said: "O company of the Ansar! The Messenger of Allah is calling you." But no one came. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to you! Call the Aws and the Khazraj specifically." So he called out: "O company of the Aws and the Khazraj! This is the Messenger of Allah calling you." But no one came. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call the Muhajirun specifically, for my pledge of allegiance is upon their necks." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) told me that then a thousand of them came, having cast aside their scabbards. They came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then they began to advance, until Allah Almighty granted them victory.

Sayyiduna Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Fihri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It was an intensely hot day, and we had camped beneath the shade of the trees. When the sun passed its zenith, I put on my armour, mounted my horse and came into the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his tent. I greeted him with salam, and he said: "And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah Almighty and His blessings." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! The time for departure has come." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call Bilal." Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) sprang out from beneath a tree whose shade was like the shade of a bird and said: "Here I am at your service; may I be your ransom." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Saddle my horse for me." He brought out a saddle whose two sides were stuffed with palm fibre; there was no pride or extravagance in it. He saddled it for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted. We travelled that evening and that night until, when the horsemen of the two sides came face to face, the Muslims turned their backs and retreated, as Allah Almighty has said. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O servants of Allah! I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted from his horse and took a handful of pebbles. The one who was nearer to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) than I was told me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw those pebbles toward the enemy and said: "May the faces be disfigured!" Then Allah Almighty routed the polytheists. The narrator states: Their sons told us that their fathers used to say: On that day every one of us had his eyes and mouth filled with dust, and we heard a sound coming from the sky to the earth like iron being drawn across a basin. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud recorded this report up to the words: "There was no pride or extravagance in it."
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it, and the narrators of both are thiqat (trustworthy).

Yasir narrates: Sayyiduna Amr bin Murrah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to narrate this hadith: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Amr bin Murrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he and his people, Juhaynah bin Zayd, should hold their position on the day of the battle with Hawazin. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "O people of Juhaynah, stay behind the Banu Sulaym; if they become agitated, then put your weapons to the napes of their necks and their battle cry." On that day one clan of them did become agitated, called the Banu Usayyah, because they had disobeyed Allah and His Messenger, and the people of Juhaynah killed them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Juhaynah, and they advanced toward Hawazin, and he turned Sulaym away from their position. On that day Allah Almighty routed them, and there was much killing among them. On that day Sayyiduna Amr bin Murrah (may Allah be pleased with him) killed Ibn Dhi al-Burdayn al-Hilali, and Juhaynah acquitted themselves excellently in it.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hand me a fistful of pebbles." I handed them to him, and he threw them toward the enemy, and the eyes of every one of the enemy were filled with pebbles. Regarding this, the verse was revealed: "When you threw the pebbles, it was not you who threw them; rather it was Allah who threw them."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Yahya bin Ya'la, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn, when the Muslims were routed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was at that time riding his grey mule named Duldul. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to it: "O Duldul, sit down." It pressed its belly to the ground, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a handful of dust and threw it toward those people. He said: "Ha Mim, they will not be helped." Then the enemy was routed, although we had not shot a single arrow at them, nor thrust a spear at them, nor struck them with a sword.

Mus'ab bin Shaybah transmits this statement of his father: On the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn I went out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah, it was neither Islam that brought me out nor any recognition of it; rather, I disdained that Hawazin should prevail over Quraysh. I said, while I was standing with him: "O Messenger of Allah! I see piebald horses." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Shaybah, only a disbeliever sees them." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his blessed hand on my chest and prayed: "O Allah, guide Shaybah." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck it a second time and said: "O Allah, guide Shaybah." By Allah, the third time he had not yet lifted his hand from my chest before no one among the creation of Allah was dearer to me than him. The narrator states: When the two sides met, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding his she-camel, or perhaps his mule; Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was holding its reins, and Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) was holding the animal by its mouth. The Muslims were routed, and Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said in a loud voice: "Where are the first Muhajirun? Where are the people of Surah al-Baqarah?" And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying as he advanced: "I am the Prophet, there is no lie in it; and I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib." Then the Muslims turned back and clashed with their swords. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now the furnace has become hot." The narrator says: And Allah Almighty routed the polytheists.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Ayyub bin Jabir, who is da'if (weak).

Ikrimah narrates: Sayyiduna Shaybah bin Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) stated: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prepared for the Battle of Hunayn, I remembered my father and my uncle, whom Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) had killed. I said: "Today I will take my revenge on Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)." I came toward him, and Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was on his right side, wearing white armour as though it were made of silver. The dust cleared, and I said: "This is his uncle; he will not abandon him." Then I came toward him from the left side, and Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith was there. I said: "This is his cousin; he will not abandon him." Then I came toward him from behind. I kept drawing closer and closer, until there remained only enough distance for me to strike him with the sword. But just then a flame of fire like lightning rose up before me. I feared that it would burn me, so I stepped backward. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned toward me and said: "O Shayb, come forward." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his blessed hand on my chest, and Allah Almighty drove Satan out of my heart. I raised my gaze to him, and he was dearer to me than my hearing and my sight. Then he said to me: "O Shayb, fight the disbelievers." Then he said: "O Abbas, call out loudly to the first Muhajirun, who gave the pledge beneath the tree, and call the Ansar, who gave refuge and gave help." The narrator says: The Ansar came back toward the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the way a cow comes back to its young, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted from his mount, (surrounded by them) like a dense thicket of trees. The narrator says: In my view, the Ansar's spears were a greater cause of fear for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) than the spears of the disbelievers. Then he said: "O Abbas, hand me some earth." Allah Almighty made his mule understand his words, and it bent down until its belly was almost touching the ground. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) picked up pebbles, then blew toward their faces and said: "May their faces be disfigured! Ha Mim, they will not be helped."

Muhammad bin Sallam al-Jumahi narrates: Malik bin Awf bin Sa'd bin Rabi'ah bin Yarbu' bin Wathilah bin Dahman bin Nasr bin Mu'awiyah bin Bakr bin Hawazin. Ibn Sallam says: Awf was a chief and a bold leader. His mention and his fame began on the Day of al-Fijar, when he was with his people; on that occasion he performed great deeds. He was the commander of Hawazin when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) faced Hawazin, and he had brought their wealth and their families along with the people. Durayd bin al-Simmah opposed him, but he persisted and refused, so the whole matter came to rest on his decision, and they did not praise his opinion. He was their chief in those days. When he saw the rout of his companions, he made for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), for he was a man of fierce boldness, intending to harm him. Sayyiduna Marthad bin Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi (may Allah be pleased with him) confronted him and fought him. He spurred his horse Muhaj to charge, but it did not advance; then he urged it again and shouted at it, but it did not advance. So he recited these verses: "Advance, O Muhaj, this is a dreadful day! One like me against one like you defends and wheels back to attack, and strikes a blow that tears and terrifies, from which blood gushes out of the belly, and in which the spearhead of the striker breaks, when band after band rises up." After he had accepted Islam, he took part in the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah, and there he recited these verses: "Advance, O Muhaj! These are their horsemen; and let not any man's strangeness (that is, his being different) frighten you." He had fled from Hunayn and gone to Ta'if. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If he comes to me, I will grant him safety and give him one hundred (camels)." Then he came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did that for him, and then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him to fight the people of Ta'if. Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) once wrote to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) asking him for reinforcements, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote back to him: "You are asking me for reinforcements while you have ten thousand men with you; you have Malik bin Awf, and you have Hanzalah bin Rabi'ah," this being the one who is called Hanzalah the Scribe. Ibn Sallam narrates: One of his people told me that he said to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me (wealth) in order to reconcile my heart to Islam. I did not like to take a payment for accepting Islam, so I intend to return it." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it to you only because he (peace and blessings be upon him) considered it your right."
Al-Tabarani recorded it through Khalifah bin Khayyat from Muhammad bin Sallam al-Jumahi, and both of them are thiqah (trustworthy).

The wife of Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Uhud or the Battle of Hunayn, Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) was struck in the side by an arrow. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Please remove the arrow." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Rafi', if you wish, you may have both the arrow and its head taken out; and if you wish, I will remove the arrow and leave the head inside, and on the Day of Resurrection I will testify in your favour that you are a martyr." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Remove the arrow and leave the head inside." The narrator says: So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) removed the arrow and left the head.
Ahmad recorded it. I do not know the wife of Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him); the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Abd al-Samad bin Habib al-Awdhi transmits this statement of his father: We took part in a campaign together with Sayyiduna Sinan bin Salamah bin al-Muhabbiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and he told us: I was born on the day of the Battle of Hunayn. When my father was given the good news about me, and the people said: "A son has been born to you," he said: "That I shoot a sinan (that is, an arrow) on behalf of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would be dearer to me than that of which you have given me the good news." Then he named me Sinan.
Ahmad recorded it. No one besides his son has narrated from the narrator named Habib.
