Mus'ab bin Shaybah transmits this statement of his father: On the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn I went out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah, it was neither Islam that brought me out nor any recognition of it; rather, I disdained that Hawazin should prevail over Quraysh. I said, while I was standing with him: "O Messenger of Allah! I see piebald horses." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Shaybah, only a disbeliever sees them." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his blessed hand on my chest and prayed: "O Allah, guide Shaybah." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck it a second time and said: "O Allah, guide Shaybah." By Allah, the third time he had not yet lifted his hand from my chest before no one among the creation of Allah was dearer to me than him. The narrator states: When the two sides met, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding his she-camel, or perhaps his mule; Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was holding its reins, and Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) was holding the animal by its mouth. The Muslims were routed, and Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said in a loud voice: "Where are the first Muhajirun? Where are the people of Surah al-Baqarah?" And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying as he advanced: "I am the Prophet, there is no lie in it; and I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib." Then the Muslims turned back and clashed with their swords. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now the furnace has become hot." The narrator says: And Allah Almighty routed the polytheists.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Ayyub bin Jabir, who is da'if (weak).
