Sayyiduna Budayl bin Warqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to hold the captives and the wealth at al-Ji'ranah until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived. The narrator says: So I held them there.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Al-Bazzar also recorded it. He recorded it through the son of Sayyiduna Budayl (may Allah be pleased with him) from his father, and he did not name the son of Sayyiduna Budayl (may Allah be pleased with him). The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Jarwal Zuhayr bin Surad (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Messenger of Allah took us captive on the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn, the day of the battle with Hawazin, and began separating the captives and the sheep and goats, I came to him and began reciting these verses: "O Messenger of Allah, bestow your favour upon us with generosity, for you are the man in whom we place our hope and for whose (kindness) we wait. Bestow your favour upon a community that destiny has held back, whose unity has been scattered and whose circumstances time has changed. Time has left us crying out in grief, with intense sorrow and distress upon their hearts, if you do not come to their aid by spreading mercy, O you who, when put to the test, are the weightiest of people in forbearance. Be kind to the women whose milk you drank, for pure milk filled your mouth from their milk, when you were a small child and used to drink their milk, when what they brought and what they left pleased you. Do not make us like one whose unity has been scattered, and let us remain, for we are a radiant people; we are grateful for blessings when they are met with ingratitude, and after this day too we have a store (of gratitude). So grant pardon to those among whom you were nursed, among whom are your (foster) mothers, for pardon becomes renowned. O best of those with whom the bay steeds find ease at the time of battle, as long as (its) sparks keep blazing, we hope for pardon from you. You have been given the title 'Guide of creation', because you pardon and you help. So pardon; may Allah Almighty on the Day of Resurrection keep you safe from the things you wish to be safe from, and grant you success." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard these verses, he said: "Whatever falls to my share and to the share of the Banu Abd al-Muttalib is yours." Quraysh said: "Whatever falls to our share belongs to Allah and His Messenger." The Ansar said: "Whatever falls to our share belongs to Allah and His Messenger."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in all three of his books, and its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the delegation of the tribe of Hawazin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Ji'ranah, they had already accepted Islam. They said: "We are of (your) roots and kinsfolk, and the trial that has befallen us is not hidden from you; so bestow your favour upon us, may Allah Almighty bestow His favour upon you." A man from the tribe of Hawazin, from the Banu Sa'd bin Bakr, whose name was Zuhayr and whose kunyah was Abu Surad, said: "O Messenger of Allah, our women are your paternal aunts, your maternal aunts and your nursing mothers who cared for you. Had we gone over to al-Harith bin Abi Shimr or al-Nu'man bin al-Mundhir, and then faced from him a situation like the one we are facing now, we would have hoped for his kindness and favour toward us; and you are the best of those who were cared for." Then he recited to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) verses that he had composed, in which he mentioned his kinship with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the care they had given the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he recited these verses: "O Messenger of Allah, bestow your favour upon us with generosity, for you are the man in whom we place our hope and for whose (kindness) we wait. Do not make us like one whose unity has been scattered, and let us remain, for we are a radiant people." The narrator states: After this he mentioned the full hadith.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Ibn Ishaq, who is a mudallis, but he is thiqah (trustworthy). The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn I was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The delegations of Hawazin came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah! We are of (your) roots and kinsfolk; bestow your favour upon us, and Allah Almighty will bestow His favour upon you, for the trial we have faced is not hidden from you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Choose one of these: your wives, your wealth or your children." They said: "You have given us a choice between our lineage and our wealth; we choose our sons." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever falls to my share and to the share of the Banu Abd al-Muttalib is yours. When I have offered the Zuhr prayer, say: 'We present the intercession of the Messenger of Allah to the Muslims, and the intercession of the Muslims to the Messenger of Allah, concerning our women and our children.'" They did so, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever falls to my share and to the share of the Banu Abd al-Muttalib is yours." The Muhajirun said: "Whatever falls to our share belongs to the Messenger of Allah." The Ansar said the same. Uyaynah bin Badr said: "As for what falls to my share and to the Banu Fazarah, we will not give it." Al-Aqra' bin Habis said: "What falls to my share and to the Banu Tamim, we will not give up either." Abbas bin Mirdas said: "What falls to my share and to the Banu Sulaym, we will not give up." The two clans said: "You are wrong! Rather, it too belongs to the Messenger of Allah." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, return to them their women and their sons. Whoever of you wishes to keep anything of these spoils, we will give him six shares from the first fay' (spoils) that Allah Almighty grants us." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his riding camel, and the people clung to him, saying: "Divide among us our spoils that are ours," until the people forced him toward a tree, and his cloak was snatched. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, return my cloak to me. By Allah, if there were livestock for you as many as the trees of Tihamah, I would divide them among you, and then you would not find me miserly, cowardly or untruthful." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went near a camel, took a hair from its hump, placed it between two of his fingers, the index finger and the middle finger, then raised it and said: "O people, from these spoils I am not permitted to take even this much, except the khumus (one-fifth), and the khumus too will be returned to you. So hand over even the thread and the needle, for misappropriation of spoils will be a cause of shame, Fire and disgrace for the one who does it on the Day of Resurrection." Then a man stood up who had a bundle of hair with him and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I took this in order to place it under the saddle of my camel because of a sore that has appeared on it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever is my share and the share of the Banu Abd al-Muttalib is yours." The man said: "O Messenger of Allah! Now that the matter has reached what I see, I have no interest in it." Then he put it down. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud recorded this report in a much abridged form.
Ahmad recorded it, and the narrators of one of his chains are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was spoken to concerning the captives of Hawazin, he said: "O Messenger of Allah! These are the people of your clan and your roots, and they are your relatives through nursing. It is for this very day that we kept you in reserve. These women are your mothers, your sisters and your maternal aunts." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke with his Companions about this, and they returned their captives to them; only the case of two men was different. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and give the two of them the choice." One of them said: "I give up my share," and the other said: "I will not give it up." When that man went away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, make his share worthless." Then that man passed by a virgin slave girl and a boy, and he left them. Then he passed by an old woman and thought: "I should take her, for she is the mother of a clan; they will make every effort to ransom her from me." Sayyiduna Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said Allahu Akbar and said: "Take her." Then he said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah, neither is this woman's mouth cool, nor is her breast firm, nor does she have any close relative. O Messenger of Allah, she is an old woman; she has no one." When that man saw that no one was paying any attention to the woman, he let her go.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains al-Zubayr, the father of al-Nu'man bin al-Zubayr al-San'ani, whom I do not know; the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Al-Tabarani states: Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Khuwaylid bin Asad bin Abd al-Uzza bin Qusayy bin Kilab; his kunyah is Abu Khalid. His mother is Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) bint Zuhayr bin al-Harith bin Asad, and her mother is Salma bint Abd Manaf bin Abd al-Dar. This Companion accepted Islam on the occasion of the Conquest of Makkah. He was among those whose hearts were to be reconciled (al-mu'allafah qulubuhum); the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him one hundred camels from the spoils of the Battle of Hunayn.

" . قَالُوا : بَلَى .

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed the spoils of the Battle of Hunayn among those whose hearts were to be reconciled, and the Ansar felt uneasy about it. They said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has distributed (the spoils) among those people." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O company of the Ansar! Are you not pleased that you take the Messenger of Allah back with you?" They said: "Yes, indeed."
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains Hafs bin Umar al-Adani, who is da'if (weak); Ibn al-Tahrani says he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Muhammad bin Ishaq narrates: At Hunayn, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to the delegation of the tribe of Hawazin, having asked them about Malik bin Awf al-Nasri: "How is Malik?" They said: "He is in Ta'if." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Malik that if he comes to me as a Muslim, I will return his family and his wealth to him and also give him one hundred camels." Malik was informed of this, and he set out from Ta'if to come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Malik feared for himself from the tribe of Thaqif, that they had come to know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said this about him, and that they might imprison him. So Malik gave orders for his riding camel, and it was made ready. He gave orders for his horse, and it was brought to him from Ta'if. He set out by night, sat upon his horse and caught up with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Ji'ranah, or perhaps at Makkah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned his family and his wealth to him and also gave him one hundred camels.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was distributing the spoils of the Battle of Hunayn, Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) was at his side. An angel came and said: "Your Lord commands you to do such-and-such." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him): "Do you recognise him?" He said: "He is indeed an angel, but I do not know all the angels of your Lord."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. He added these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) feared that it might be a devil. Its chain contains Husayn bin al-Hasan al-Ashqar, who is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected) and has been accused of lying; Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy). Many hadiths concerning the spoils of the Battle of Hunayn will come in the chapter on the virtues of the Ansar.
