Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was distributing the spoils of the Battle of Hunayn, Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) was at his side. An angel came and said: "Your Lord commands you to do such-and-such." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him): "Do you recognise him?" He said: "He is indeed an angel, but I do not know all the angels of your Lord."
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. He added these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) feared that it might be a devil. Its chain contains Husayn bin al-Hasan al-Ashqar, who is munkar al-hadith (his narrations are rejected) and has been accused of lying; Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy). Many hadiths concerning the spoils of the Battle of Hunayn will come in the chapter on the virtues of the Ansar.
