He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali, with what did you enter ihram?" He replied: "O Messenger of Allah, with the same as that with which you entered ihram." He collected the zakah, then returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I neither exceeded the limits nor left any due uncollected, and I was given a gift, so I accepted the gift." At this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on the pulpit and said: "I send some men to collect zakah, and then one of them comes and says: 'By Allah, I neither exceeded the limits nor left any of their dues, and I was given a gift, so I accepted it.' Could he not have sat in some hut and waited to see whether he would be given a gift or not? Beware! Let none of you come carrying on his neck a camel that is grunting, or a cow that is lowing, or a goat that is bleating." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Quraysh asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission regarding the 'atirah (the sacrifice of Rajab), saying: "O Messenger of Allah, we used to offer the 'atirah in Rajab." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "An 'atirah like the 'atirah of the Days of Ignorance? Rather, whoever among you wishes to slaughter for Allah, eat (from it) and give in charity, let him do so." Their 'atirah was that they would slaughter, then go to the blood of their slaughtered animals and smear it on the heads of their idols.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: When Abdullah bin Ubayy fell into the illness in which he died, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him and the two had some conversation. Abdullah said: "I have understood what you are saying. Do me a favour: shroud me in your shirt and pray (the funeral prayer) over me." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded him in that very shirt of his and prayed over him. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Allah knows best what kind of prayer it was, and Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) never deceived any human being.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When this verse was revealed: "And do not eat of that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned" [Surah al-An'am: 121], Persia sent a message to Quraysh: Dispute with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and say to him: What you slaughter with your own hand with a knife is lawful, yet what Allah has slaughtered with a sword of gold (that is, what dies by itself) is unlawful? Thereupon this verse was revealed: "And indeed the devils inspire their allies to dispute with you" [Surah al-An'am: 121]. He said: "The devils are (the people) of Persia, and their allies are from Quraysh."

Ishaq said: I think he named her as Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her). She passed away in Madinah, so I came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and informed him, and he prostrated. I said to him: You are prostrating while the sun has not yet even risen? Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: May you lose your mother! Do you not know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you see a sign, prostrate." And what sign could be greater than the Mothers of the Believers departing from this world from among us while we are alive?

Shall I not tell you ten qualities which, if you do them, Allah will forgive all your sins: the first and the last, the old and the new, the hidden and the open, the small and the great, those done by mistake and those done deliberately? (It is this:) You pray four rak'ahs, and in each rak'ah recite Surah al-Fatihah along with a surah. When you finish the recitation in the first rak'ah, say fifteen times while standing: 'Subhan Allah, wal-hamdu lillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar' (Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest). Then bow and say it ten times while bowing. Then raise your head and say it ten times while standing. Then prostrate and say it ten times in prostration. Then raise your head and say it ten times while sitting. Then prostrate and say it ten times. Then raise your head and say it ten times. That makes seventy-five (in all). Repeat this in four rak'ahs. Then even if your sins were like the foam of the sea or the sand of 'Alij, Allah would forgive them for you."
