It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "A Day that will make the children grey-haired" [Surah al-Muzzammil: 17], and said: "That is the Day of Resurrection, and that is the Day when Allah, exalted be His mention, will say to Adam (peace be upon him): Stand up and send forth from your offspring a contingent to the Fire. He will say: How many, O my Lord? Allah will say: Out of every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine, and one will be saved." This weighed heavily on the Muslims, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) realised it. Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this in their faces, he said: "The children of Adam are many, and Gog and Magog (Ya'juj and Ma'juj) are also of the offspring of Adam, and not one man of them dies until a thousand men from his own loins inherit from him. In them and in those like them there is a shield for you."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I teach you some words by which Allah will benefit you and whoever you teach them to?" He said: Yes, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the night of Friday, pray four rak'ahs. In the first rak'ah recite Surah al-Fatihah and Ya Sin; in the second, Surah al-Fatihah and Ha Mim al-Dukhan; in the third, Surah al-Fatihah and Alif Lam Mim Tanzil al-Sajdah; and in the fourth, Surah al-Fatihah and Tabarak of the Mufassal (Surah al-Mulk). When you have finished the tashahhud, praise and extol Allah, send blessings upon the prophets, and seek forgiveness for the believers, then say this supplication: 'O Allah, have mercy on me by (enabling me to) abandon sins forever as long as You keep me alive; have mercy on me so that I do not burden myself with what does not concern me; and grant me good insight into what will make You pleased with me. O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of majesty and honour, and of might that none can overpower, I ask You, O Allah, O Most Merciful, by Your majesty and the light of Your Face, to bind the love of Your Book to my heart as You have taught me, and to grant me that I recite it in the manner that will make You pleased with me. And I ask You to illuminate my sight with the Book, to free my tongue with it, to relieve my heart with it, to expand my chest with it, to employ my body with it, to strengthen me for that and to help me in it, for none helps me to good besides You, and none grants success in it except You.' Do this for three Fridays, or five, or seven; by Allah's permission you will memorise it, and it has never failed a believer." So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) after seven Fridays and told him that he had memorised the Qur'an and the hadith. They took spoils, and among them (the captives) was a man who said to the Companions: I am not one of them (the enemy). I fell in love with a woman and followed her here, so let me look at her, then do whatever seems right to you. There was a tall woman of tawny complexion, and he said to her: O Hubaysh, be safe (accept my greeting) before life comes to an end. Tell me, if I had followed you and caught up with you at Hilyah, or found you at al-Khawaniq, would it not have been right that a lover who endured the hardship of journeying by night and in the heat of midday should attain his desire? She said: Yes, may I be sacrificed for you. So they took him forward and struck off his head. Then the woman came and threw herself upon him, gave one or two gasps, and then died. When they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) they told him the news, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Was there not a single merciful man among you?"

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali bin Abi Talib, O Fatimah! The help of Allah and the victory have come," "and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes, then glorify with the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness; indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance" [Surah al-Nasr: 3] - this (indicates) that after me there will be fighting (jihad) among the believers. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On what grounds shall we fight the believers who say 'We have believed'? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Over innovating in the religion, when they act on opinion, though there is no room for opinion in the religion; the religion is only from the Lord: His command and His prohibition." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! What if a matter comes before us about which no Qur'an has been revealed and no specific sunnah has come from you, what should we do? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Make it a matter of consultation (shura) among the worshippers of the believers, and do not decide it by the opinion of one particular person. If I were to appoint anyone as my successor, no one would be more entitled to it than you, because of your precedence in Islam, your kinship with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), your being my son-in-law, and your having the leader of the believing women (Fatimah) with you, and before that because of the trials Abu Talib endured and the support he gave me - the Qur'an was revealed, and I am eager to look after him in (caring for) his children."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the Battle of Tabuk and performed Umrah, and descended from the pass (thaniyyah) of Usfan, he ordered his Companions to stay by al-Aqabah "until I return to you." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) went and stopped at the grave of his mother and spoke privately with his Lord for a long time. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) wept, and his weeping became intense, and these people also wept because of his (peace and blessings be upon him) weeping, and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not weep in this place unless something had happened in his (peace and blessings be upon him) Ummah that they cannot bear. When these people wept, he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, came back to them and said: "What makes you weep?" They said: O Prophet of Allah! We wept because of your weeping; we thought that perhaps something had happened in your Ummah that they cannot bear. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, though some of it has happened. But I stopped at my mother's grave and asked Allah to permit me to intercede for her on the Day of Resurrection, and Allah refused to permit me. So I felt pity for her, as she is my mother, and I wept. Then Jibril (peace be upon him) came to me and said: 'And Ibrahim's asking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him; but when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of Allah, he dissociated himself from him' [Surah al-Tawbah: 114]. So dissociate yourself from your mother just as Ibrahim (peace be upon him) dissociated himself from his father. So I felt pity for her, as she is my mother. And I asked my Lord to lift four things from my Ummah; He lifted two of them and refused to lift two. I asked my Lord to lift from them stoning from the sky and drowning from the earth, and that He not divide them into sects, and that He not make some of them taste the violence of others. So Allah lifted from them stoning from the sky and drowning from the earth, but Allah refused to lift two things: killing, and turmoil (harj)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned aside to his mother's grave only because she was buried below such-and-such a place, and that (that is, Usfan) was their people's territory.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dug the trench (khandaq), and his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions had tied stones to their bellies because of hunger. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this, he said: "Do you know of a man who could feed us a meal?" A man said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Well then, go ahead and guide us to him." So they went to the man, and he was in the trench digging his share. His wife sent word to him: Come, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has come to us. The man came running and said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you - and he had a she-goat with her kid. He rushed towards it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The kid (slaughter it; leave the goat) behind us." So he slaughtered the kid, and the woman took her flour, kneaded it and baked bread, and when the pot was ready she crumbled the bread into her bowl and poured the broth over it (tharid), and brought it near to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put his finger in it and said: "Bismillah. O Allah, bless it. Eat." So they all ate from it until they were full, and they had eaten only a third of it, while two thirds remained. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent away the ten men who were with him: Go and send to us the same number as yourselves. So they left, and another ten men came in their place and ate from it until they were full. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and supplicated for the lady of the house, and prayed for blessing for her and for her household. Then they all walked to the trench, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take us to Salman." There was a rock in front of him which they were failing to break. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "Leave it to me, so that I am the first to strike it." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said "Bismillah" and struck it, and a third of it broke off. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allahu Akbar! By the Lord of the Ka'bah, the palaces of Rome!" Then he struck it again and another piece fell, and he said: "Allahu Akbar! By the Lord of the Ka'bah, the palaces of Persia!" At this the hypocrites said: We are digging a trench to protect ourselves, and he promises us the palaces of Persia and Rome!
