حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ الْمُنِيبِ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِي اللهُ عَنْهُمَا، قَالَ: لَمَّا أَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ غَزْوَةِ خَيْبَرَ نَزَلَ عَلَيْهِ {إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللهِ وَالْفَتْحُ} [النصر: ١] إِلَى آخِرَ الْقِصَّةِ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «يَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، يَا فَاطِمَةُ جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللهِ وَالْفَتْحُ» ، {وَرَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دَيْنِ اللهِ أَفْوَاجًا فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا} [النصر: ٣] عَلَى أَنَّهُ يَكُونَ بَعْدِي فِي الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الْجِهَادُ قَالَ: عَلَامَ نُجَاهِدُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ آمَنَّا؟ قَالَ: «عَلَى الْإِحْدَاثِ فِي الدِّينِ إِذَا مَا عَمِلُوا بِالرَّأْيِ وَلَا رَأْيَ فِي الدِّينِ، إِنَّمَا الدِّينُ مِنَ الرَّبِّ أَمْرُهُ وَنَهْيُهُ» قَالَ عَلِيٌّ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ عَرَضَ لَنَا أَمْرٌ لَمْ يَنْزِلْ فِيهِ قُرْآنٌ وَلَمْ يُخَصِّصْ فِيهِ سُنَّةٌ مِنْكَ، قَالَ: «تَجْعَلُونَهُ شُورَى بَيْنَ الْعَابِدِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَا تَقْضُونَهُ بِرَأْيِ خَاصَّةٍ، فَلَوْ كُنْتُ مُسْتَخْلِفًا أَحَدًا لَمْ يَكُنْ أَحَقَّ بِهِ مِنْكَ لقِدَمِكَ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ، وقَرابَتِكَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وصِهْرِكَ وَعِنْدَكَ سَيِّدَةُ نِسَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، وَقَبْلَ ذَلِكَ مَا كَانَ مِنْ بَلَاءِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، إِيَّايَ وَنَزَلَ الْقُرْآنُ وَأَنَا حَرِيصٌ عَلَى أَنْ أَرْعَى لَهُ فِي وَلَدِهِ»
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the Battle of Khaybar, this verse was revealed to him (peace and blessings be upon him): "When the help of Allah and the victory come" [Surah al-Nasr: 1], to the end. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ali bin Abi Talib, O Fatimah! The help of Allah and the victory have come," "and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes, then glorify with the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness; indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance" [Surah al-Nasr: 3] - this (indicates) that after me there will be fighting (jihad) among the believers. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On what grounds shall we fight the believers who say 'We have believed'? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Over innovating in the religion, when they act on opinion, though there is no room for opinion in the religion; the religion is only from the Lord: His command and His prohibition." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! What if a matter comes before us about which no Qur'an has been revealed and no specific sunnah has come from you, what should we do? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Make it a matter of consultation (shura) among the worshippers of the believers, and do not decide it by the opinion of one particular person. If I were to appoint anyone as my successor, no one would be more entitled to it than you, because of your precedence in Islam, your kinship with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), your being my son-in-law, and your having the leader of the believing women (Fatimah) with you, and before that because of the trials Abu Talib endured and the support he gave me - the Qur'an was revealed, and I am eager to look after him in (caring for) his children."
