Some people from Kufah came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). He conveyed greetings of peace to them, and ordered them to fear Allah, and not to differ over the Qur'an nor dispute about it; for it has no contradiction within it, it does not weaken, and it does not wear out from frequent repetition. Do you not see that the Shari'ah of Islam in it is one: its limits, its recitation and the command of Allah in it? If one of two harfs (modes of recitation) commanded something and the other forbade it, that would be the contradiction; but it (the Qur'an) gathers all of that together. And I hope that the portion of understanding and knowledge which is the best knowledge among people has come to be among you. If I knew of anyone who could be reached by camel and who knew better than me what Allah revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I would certainly seek him out, so that I could add his knowledge to my knowledge. I know that the Qur'an used to be presented to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) once every year, then in the year he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, it was presented to him twice. When I recited the Qur'an before him, he would tell me that I had recited well. So whoever recites according to my recitation, let him not abandon it out of aversion to it; for whoever denies a single harf of it has, as it were, denied all of it.
