Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and said: "I have been commanded to recite (the Qur'an) to your brothers among the jinn, so let a man among you stand up with me, and let no man stand up who has even a mustard seed's weight of arrogance in his heart." I stood up with him (peace and blessings be upon him), took a vessel containing nabidh, and set off with him (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached there, he drew a line around me and said: "Do not step out of it, for if you step out, you will not see me, nor will I see you, until the Day of Resurrection." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went off and disappeared from me until I could no longer see him (peace and blessings be upon him). When the dawn spread, he (peace and blessings be upon him) came back and said: "I see you standing?" I said: "I did not sit down at all." He said: "What harm would it have done you had you sat down?" I said: "I feared that I might step out of it." He said: "Listen, had you stepped out of it, you would not have seen me, nor would I have seen you, until the Day of Resurrection. Do you have anything for ablution?" I said: "No." He said: "What is this vessel?" I said: "It has nabidh in it." He said: "Wholesome dates and purifying water." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution with it and established the prayer. When he completed the prayer, two men of the jinn came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked for provisions. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have I not already assigned for you and your people that which will set you right?" They said: "Certainly, but we wished that some of us attend the prayer with you." He said: "Where are you from?" They said: "We are from the people of Nasibin." He said: "These two have succeeded, and their people have succeeded." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) made dung and bones food and meat for them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade cleaning oneself (istinja) with a bone or dung.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was with a few of his Companions, when suddenly he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let one man among you stand up with me, and let no one stand up with me who has even an atom's weight of deceit in his heart." I stood up with him (peace and blessings be upon him) and took the vessel, thinking that it contained water. I went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until, when we reached the upper part of Makkah, I saw some dark crowds. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) drew a line for me and said: "Stay standing here until I come to you." I stood, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went towards them, and I saw them surging towards him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept conversing with them for a long part of the night until he came to me at dawn and said: "O Ibn Mas'ud! Are you still standing?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Did you (peace and blessings be upon him) not tell me to keep standing until you came?" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Do you have anything for ablution?" I said: "Yes." I opened the vessel and it turned out to be nabidh. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, I took it thinking it was water, but it is nabidh." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wholesome dates and purifying water." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution with it. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to pray, two individuals from among them came and said: "O Messenger of Allah! We would like you to lead us in our prayer." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed them in a row behind him, then led us in prayer. When he finished, I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Who were these?" He said: "These were the jinn of Nasibin. They asked me for provisions, so I gave them as provision that whatever bone they find, they will find it covered with meat, and whatever dung they find, they will find it barley." On that occasion the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade cleaning oneself (istinja) with dung and bone.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Before the Hijrah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to the outskirts of Makkah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) drew a line for me and said: "Do not do anything new until I come to you." Then he said: "Do not be alarmed or frightened by anything you see." He says: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went forward a little and sat down, and suddenly some dark-skinned men appeared, as though they were men of the Zutt. He says: They were just as Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: "They almost crowded upon him in layers" [Surah al-Jinn: 19]. I intended to stand up and defend him (peace and blessings be upon him) from them as much as I could, then I remembered the instruction of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so I stayed. Then they dispersed from around him (peace and blessings be upon him), and I heard them saying: "O Messenger of Allah! Our journey is far and we are departing, so give us provisions." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For you is the dung; whatever bone you come upon, there will be meat on it for you, and whatever dung you come upon will be dates for you." When they had left, I said: "Who were these?" He said: "These were the jinn of Nasibin."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: On the Night of the Jinn the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me to come along with him. I set off with him (peace and blessings be upon him) until we reached the upper part of Makkah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) drew a line for me and said: "Do not move from here." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned off towards the mountains. I saw some men descending towards him (peace and blessings be upon him) from the mountaintops until they came between me and him (peace and blessings be upon him) and blocked my way. I drew my sword from its sheath and said: "I will fight until I rescue the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then I remembered his (peace and blessings be upon him) words: "Do not move from here until I come to you." He says: I remained in that state until dawn came. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came while I was standing, and he said: "Are you still standing in the same state?" I said: "Even if you (peace and blessings be upon him) had stayed away a whole month, I would not have moved until you (peace and blessings be upon him) came." Then I told him (peace and blessings be upon him) what I had been about to do, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had you gone out, I and you would never have met until the Day of Resurrection." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) interlaced his fingers with my fingers and said: "I have been promised that the jinn and mankind will believe in me. As for mankind, they have believed in me; as for the jinn, you have seen." Then he said: "I think that the time of my death has drawn near." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will you not appoint Abu Bakr as your successor?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from me, and I understood that he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not approve of it. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will you not appoint Umar as your successor?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from me, and I understood that he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not approve of this either. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will you not appoint Ali as your successor?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One besides whom there is no god! If you all pledge allegiance to him and obey him, he will admit you all into Paradise."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Night of the Delegation of the Jinn, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) heaved a breath. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! What is the matter with you (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "O Ibn Mas'ud! I have been informed of my death." I said: "Appoint someone as successor." He said: "Whom?" I said: "Abu Bakr." The narrator says: He (peace and blessings be upon him) fell silent. Then some time passed, then he heaved a breath again. I said: "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! What is the matter with you (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "O Ibn Mas'ud! I have been informed of my death." I said: "Then appoint someone as successor." He said: "Whom?" I said: "Umar." He (peace and blessings be upon him) fell silent. Then some time passed, then he heaved a breath again. I said: "What is the matter with you (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "O Ibn Mas'ud! I have been informed of my death." I said: "Then appoint someone as successor." He said: "Whom?" I said: "Ali bin Abi Talib." He said: "Listen! By the One in whose hand my soul is, if they obey him, they will all, every one of them, enter Paradise."
