Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) visited her while she was in a neglected state, and she said: What is this state of yours? She said: A group of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), among them Ali bin Abi Talib, Abdullah bin Rawahah and Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with them), have devoted themselves solely to worship; they have abstained from women and from eating meat, and they fast by day and stand in prayer by night. So I disliked showing him a state of mine that would draw him to me, because of that to which he has devoted himself. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in, Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) told him (peace and blessings be upon him) about this. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) picked up his sandal, holding it with the index finger of his left hand, then went quickly until he reached them, and asked them about their state. They said: We intended good. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been sent only with the easy and upright pure monotheism (al-hanifiyyah); I have not been sent with innovated monasticism. Listen! Some peoples innovated monasticism, and it was then prescribed for them, but they did not observe it as it ought to be observed. Listen! Eat meat, go to your wives, fast and break your fast, pray and sleep, for this is what I have been commanded."

Indeed, Allah has appointed the Angel of Death to take the souls, except for the martyrs of the sea, for Allah Himself takes their souls. All the sins of the martyrs of the land are forgiven except debt, while all the sins of the martyrs of the sea, and their debt too, are forgiven."
