Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 7667 — from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah

Through the same chain, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, tests one of you with trials just as one of you tests his gold with fire. Some of it comes out like pure gold; that is the one whom Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has protected from doubts. Some of it comes out like gold of a lesser quality; that is the one who doubted somewhat. And some of them come out like black gold; that is the one who has fallen into trial (fitnah)."
