حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، ثنا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، ثنا عُفَيْرُ بْنُ مَعْدَانَ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سُلَيْمَ بْنَ عَامِرٍ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمْ قَالَ: «الشَّامُ صَفْوَةُ اللهِ مِنْ بِلَادِهِ، يَجْتَبِي صَفْوَتَهُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ، فَمَنْ خَرَجَ مِنَ الشَّامِ إِلَى غَيْرِهَا، فَبِسَخْطَةٍ، وَمَنْ دَخَلَهَا فَبِرَحْمَةٍ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Al-Sham is the chosen land of Allah among His lands; He selects to it His chosen ones from among His servants. So whoever leaves al-Sham for elsewhere does so because of (Allah's) displeasure, and whoever enters it does so because of mercy."
