Sayyiduna Sabrah bin Ma'bad (may Allah be pleased with him) related that they went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Farewell Pilgrimage, until they halted at Usfan in the state of ihram for Hajj. A man from Banu Mudlij, called Suraqah bin Malik bin Ju'shum, stood up before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, give us a ruling as though we were born today." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has included Umrah in this Hajj of yours. So when you arrive, whoever performs tawaf of the House (the Ka'bah) and (sa'y) between al-Safa and al-Marwah has left the state of ihram, except the one who has a sacrificial animal (hady) with him." When we had left the state of ihram, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Contract mut'ah with these women," and by istimta' we meant marriage. We put this to the women, but they refused unless a fixed term was set between us and them. This was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Do so." So I and a cousin of mine went out. I had a cloak and he had a cloak, and his cloak was better than mine, while I was younger than him. We came to a woman; she liked his cloak and she also liked my looks. Then she said: "Bring your cloak." The term between me and her was fixed at ten (days). I spent that night with her, then in the morning I went out to the mosque, and there was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) standing between the Corner and the door, saying: "O people! I had permitted you to contract mut'ah with these women. Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has now made it unlawful until the Day of Resurrection. So whoever has any of these women with him should let her go, and do not take back anything of what you have given them."

Sayyiduna Sabrah bin Ma'bad (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We went out from Madinah with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Farewell Pilgrimage, until when we reached Usfan, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Umrah has been included in Hajj until the Day of Resurrection." Upon this Suraqah bin Malik said: "O Messenger of Allah, teach us as though we were born today: is this Umrah of ours only for this year, or for ever?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather it is for ever." When we reached Makkah, we performed tawaf of the House (the Ka'bah) and (sa'y) between al-Safa and al-Marwah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to contract mut'ah with women. We went back to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "They have refused unless a fixed term is set between us and them." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then do so." So I and a companion of mine went out. I had a cloak and he had a cloak. We went to a woman and offered ourselves to her. She would look at my companion's cloak and find it better than mine, and she would look at me and find me younger than him. Then she said: "A cloak in place of a cloak," and she chose me. So I married her for my cloak and spent that night with her. When morning came, I went early to the mosque, and there was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the minbar delivering a sermon. I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever has married a woman for a fixed term should give her the dowry (mahr) that was fixed for her, not take back anything of what he has given her, and separate from her, for Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has made it unlawful for you until the Day of Resurrection."

When she looked at my companion's cloak she liked it, and when she looked at me she liked me. Then she said: "You and your cloak are enough for me." So I stayed with her for three days. So I and a cousin of mine went out. I had a cloak that had already been used, and my cousin had a fresh new cloak. I was handsome, surpassing my cousin in good looks, and my cousin was less handsome than me. We went out until, when we were in the upper or the lower part of Makkah, a young girl of Banu Amir bin Sa'sa'ah, fresh like a young she-camel, met us. We said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has commanded us, or has permitted us, to contract mut'ah with women. So do you have any interest in one of us?" She said: "Has that really happened?" We said: "Yes." She said: "Very well." So we spread out our two cloaks, and she began to look at the two cloaks, then at me and at my cousin. When my cousin saw that she was looking at me, he tried to draw her attention and said: "This cloak of mine is new and fresh, while my cousin's cloak is old and has already been used." The girl said: "His cloak is fine too." He repeated that once or twice, then in the end she chose me. Then we had not even left Makkah before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made it unlawful.
