Reports on the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his in-laws

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Once there was a heated exchange between Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him): "You people consider yourselves superior to us because of a few days by which you preceded us?" The narrator said: It has reached us
that when this was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said:
"Leave my Companions to me! By the One in whose Hand is my soul, if you were to spend gold equal to (Mount) Uhud (the narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are: equal to the mountains), you would still not reach their deeds."
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Once there was a heated exchange between Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), of the kind that happens between people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave my Companions to me, for if one of you were to give gold equal to (Mount) Uhud in charity, he would still not reach a single mudd of one of them, nor even half a mudd."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Asim bin Abi al-Nujud, and he has been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We said: "O Messenger of Allah, are we better, or those who come after us?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If one of them were to spend gold equal to (Mount) Uhud in the path of Allah, he would still not reach a single mudd of one of you, nor even half of it."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat he recorded a narration with the same meaning, except that its wording is: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, are we better, or those who will come after us?'" The chains of both contain a narrator, al-Waqidi, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: "Are we better, or those who come after us?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If one of them were to spend gold equal to (Mount) Uhud, he would still not reach a single mudd of one of you, nor even half a mudd."
Imam Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, and his hadith is hasan (good); the remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

Yazid bin Umayrah said: Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) told me this in his final counsel: Some men from among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said one day: "Our children are better than us, because they were born in Islam and have never committed shirk, while we used to commit shirk." When this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "We are better than our children, our children are better than their children, and our children's children are better than their children's children."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it within a long hadith. Its chain contains a narrator, Mu'awiyah bin Imran al-Jarmi, whom I do not know; the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "You are better than your children, and your children are better than their children."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, al-Hasan bin Abi Ja'far, and he is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty chose my Companions over all the worlds, except the prophets and messengers, and from among my Companions He chose four for me (perhaps the narrator said:) that is, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) So Allah Almighty made them my companions. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: In all my Companions there is good. And Allah Almighty chose my ummah over all other nations, and from my ummah He chose four centuries (or four generations): the first generation, the second, the third and the fourth (generation)."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), though there is disagreement about some of its narrators.

Sayyiduna Iyad al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), who had the honour of being a Companion, said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Guard me with regard to my Companions and my in-laws. Whoever guards me with regard to them, Allah Almighty will guard him in this world and the Hereafter; and whoever does not guard me with regard to them, Allah Almighty will abandon him; and whomever Allah Almighty abandons, it is near that Allah Almighty will seize him."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain contains extremely weak narrators who have also been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Guard me with regard to my Companions. Whoever guards me with regard to them, Allah Almighty will guard him in this world and the Hereafter; and whoever does not guard me with regard to them, Allah Almighty will abandon him; and whomever Allah Almighty abandons, it is near that He will seize him."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains extremely weak narrators who have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever guards me with regard to my Companions will come to me at my Pond (Hawd), and whoever does not guard me with regard to my Companions will see me only from afar."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Habib, the scribe of Imam Malik, and he is kadhdhab (a liar).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I asked my Lord that whoever I marry into, or whoever marries into my family, will be with me in Paradise, and my Lord granted me that."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Yazid bin al-Kumayt, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I asked my Lord that whoever I marry into, or whoever I give in marriage to, will be with me in Paradise, and my Lord granted me that."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Ammar bin Sayf, whom a group declared da'if (weak), while Yahya bin Ma'in declared him thiqah (trustworthy); the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection every tie of lineage and of marriage will be cut off, except my tie of lineage and of marriage."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Khuzi, and he is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the time of the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew near, the people said: "O Messenger of Allah, give us counsel." He said: "I counsel you regarding the first forerunners among the Muhajirun, who emigrated at the beginning, and their sons after them. If you do not do so, none of your obligatory or voluntary worship will be accepted."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, but with these words: "I counsel you regarding the first forerunners, and their sons after them, and their sons after them." The narrators of both reports are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Uwaym bin Sa'idah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, Allah Almighty chose me and chose companions for me, and from among them He made for me ministers, helpers and in-laws. So whoever reviles them, upon him is the curse of Allah Almighty, the angels and all of mankind; none of his obligatory or voluntary worship will be accepted."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Sa'di (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best of my ummah are its earliest people, and in its last part there will be evil people; they will not be of me, and I will have nothing to do with them."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Yazid bin Rabi'ah, and he is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people are in one place, and I and my Companions are in another place." The narrator said: Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He has spoken the truth." At that time they were with Marwan.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and Imam Ahmad recorded it within a long hadith that has already passed at the beginning of the Book of Jihad, in the chapter on emigration (Hijrah). The narrators of both reports are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The stars are a safeguard for the inhabitants of the heavens, and my Companions are a safeguard for my ummah."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its chain is jayyid (good), except that the narrator Ali bin Talhah did not hear from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"The example of my Companions is like salt in food; food becomes good only with salt."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it, and Imam al-Bazzar recorded something similar. Its chain contains a narrator, Isma'il bin Muslim, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say to us: "Soon you will remain among the (other) people like salt in food, and food does not become good without salt."
Imam al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and al-Tabarani's chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say to us: "Soon a time will come when a person will wish that he had seen me with a single glance, and that will be more beloved to him than all his wealth."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it with a da'if (weak) chain.

Sayyiduna Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Once we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when two riders were seen approaching. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These two are Kindis and belong to the tribe of Madhhij," until they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it turned out that both of them were from Madhhij. The narrator said: One of them came close to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to pledge allegiance to him. When he came close, he took hold of the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the one who has seen you, believed in you, followed you and affirmed you as truthful: what will he receive?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Glad tidings (tuba) are for him." The narrator said: Then he passed his hand over the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and went back. Then the other man came to him, until he took hold of the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to pledge allegiance to him, and he said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is your view about the one who believes in you, follows you and affirms you as truthful: what will he receive?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Glad tidings are for him, and further glad tidings are for him."
Imam al-Bazzar and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Ahmad has recorded a route of this report, which will come later in the chapter on the one who believed in the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) without having seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
