Imam al-Sha'bi says: When news reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of the conquest of Khaybar, he was told: Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) has come back from the Negus. When Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kissed him between his two eyes.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reports: When Sayyiduna Ja'far bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came from the land of Abyssinia, he met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he moved forward quickly out of reverence for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kissed him between his two eyes and said: "O my beloved one! In physical appearance and in character you resemble me most of all people, and you were created from the same clay from which I was created."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: He then mentioned the full hadith, which has already passed in the Book of the Caliphate (Kitab al-Khilafah). Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Makki bin Abdullah al-Ru'ayni, and this report is one of his munkar (denounced) reports.

He has two wings; Allah Almighty has given him these wings in exchange for his two arms. He greeted me with salam, and then he told me what he went through when he faced the polytheists. It is for this reason that in Paradise he has been named 'Ja'far al-Tayyar' (Ja'far the Flyer)."

With the same chain, he narrated this: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated, and Sayyidah Asma' bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) was near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned a greeting of salam and then said: "O Asma'! This is Ja'far bin Abi Talib with Jibril and Mika'il; they greeted us as they passed by, and I returned their greeting. He told me that on such-and-such a day he faced the polytheists. (He said:) I received seventy-three wounds and blows on the front of my body. I was holding the banner in my right hand, and that hand was cut off; then I took it in my left hand, and that hand too was cut off. So Allah Almighty has given me two wings in place of my two arms, and with these two wings I fly in Paradise along with Sayyiduna Jibril and Sayyiduna Mika'il; I alight wherever I wish, and I eat of its fruits whatever I wish." The narrator says: Sayyidah Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Congratulations to Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) for the good that Allah Almighty has granted him! But I fear that people will not believe me in this, so, O Messenger of Allah, ascend the pulpit and inform the people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit and, after praising and extolling Allah Almighty, said: "O people! Ja'far bin Abi Talib is with Jibril and Mika'il. He has two wings which Allah Almighty has given him in exchange for his two arms, and with those two wings he goes wherever he wishes in Paradise. He has greeted me with salam." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told what their situation had been when they faced the polytheists. After that it became clear to the people that Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) had faced the enemy, and he was named "Ja'far al-Tayyar" (Ja'far the Flyer) in Paradise.
