Sayyiduna Hujr bin Anbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who had lived in the era of Jahiliyyah, says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) proposed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ali! She will be married to you; I am not a deceiver.
Imam al-Bazzar recorded this narration. He says: The saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "I am not a deceiver", indicates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had made him this promise, and then said: I do not break a promise. It is not known that the narrator named Hujr narrated any report from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) other than this one.
He narrated only this narration from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy), but the narrator named Hujr did not hear from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I will narrate to you a hadith which I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); I kept seeking corroborating testimony for this hadith but did not find it. During the expedition of Tabuk, while we were travelling with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When Allah Almighty commanded me to marry Fatimah to Ali, I did so. Jibril (peace be upon him) told me: Allah Almighty has built a garden of hollow pearls; between one pearl and the next are pearls adorned with gold, and the roof of that garden is of green chrysolite (zabarjad). Allah Almighty has made in it niches of pearl adorned with rubies, and then built upper chambers above them, of which one brick is of silver, one brick of gold, one brick of precious stone, one brick of ruby and one brick of chrysolite. Then Allah Almighty made springs in it which flow in its sides, and it has been surrounded by rivers. By its rivers He has built domes of pearl, from which chains of gold are hanging, and they have been surrounded by various kinds of trees. In it there is a dome on every branch, and in every dome there is a couch made of white pearl; its covering is of fine silk (sundus) and brocade (istabraq), and its ground is of saffron, scented with musk and ambergris. In each of them there is a houri. Each dome has one hundred doors; at every door there are two guards and two trees, and in every dome there is bedding and a written inscription, around which Ayat al-Kursi is written. I asked Jibril (peace be upon him): For whom has Allah Almighty built this? He said: O Messenger of Allah! He has built it for your daughter Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him); besides their own gardens, it is a gift He has given them, and so that your eyes may be delighted."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration. Its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Nur bin Abdullah al-Mis'ami, who is a kadhdhab (liar).

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and sat before him. He said: O Messenger of Allah! You know my sincere goodwill and my early precedence in Islam; I am this and I am that. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: So what is it? He said: Marry me to Fatimah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent; the narrator is unsure whether the words are: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: I am ruined. He asked: What happened? He said: I proposed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from me. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Stay here; I will go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and make the same request of him that you made. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and sat before him. He said: O Messenger of Allah! You know my sincere goodwill and my early precedence in Islam; I am this and I am that. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then what is it? He said: Marry me to Fatimah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) returned to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) must be awaiting the command of Allah concerning her. Come with us to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), so that we may tell him to make the same request that we made. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The two of them came to me while I was on the road. They said: A proposal has been made for the daughter of your uncle. Then they urged me in this matter, so I got up, with one end of my cloak on my neck and the other on the ground, and went dragging it until I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I sat down before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: O Messenger of Allah! You know my early precedence in Islam and my sincere goodwill, and this and that. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ali! So what is it? I said: Marry me to Fatimah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What do you have? I said: I have a horse and my coat of mail. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: As for the horse, you need it; as for the coat of mail, sell it. The narrator says: I sold it for four hundred and eighty dirhams, brought the money to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and placed it in his lap. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a handful of it and said: O Bilal! Get perfume with this. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the people to prepare the household goods of Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a bed made for her and a leather pillow stuffed with leaves, and sand was spread throughout the house. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When she comes to you, do not say anything until I come to you. Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) came (to the house of Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him) with Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) and sat in a corner of the house. (Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, says:) I was in the other corner of the house. Meanwhile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived and asked: Is my brother here? Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) said: He is your brother, and you have married your daughter to him? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her): Bring me water. She got up, went to a vessel in the house, put water in it and brought it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rinsed his mouth into it, then said to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her): Stand up. Then he sprinkled water on her chest and on her head, and made this supplication: O Allah! I place her and her offspring in Your protection from Satan the accursed. Then he said: Turn around. She turned around, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sprinkled water between her shoulders as well and made this supplication: O Allah! I place her and her offspring in Your protection from Satan the accursed. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bring me more water. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I understood what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted, so I filled the vessel with water and brought it to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a little of the water into his mouth and then rinsed it back into it; then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) poured water on my head and my hands, and made the supplication: O Allah! I place him and his offspring in Your protection from Satan the accursed. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Now go in to your wife, in the name of Allah and with blessing.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Abu Bakr! What is the reason that you do not marry Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will not marry her to me. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: If he will not marry her to you, then to whom will he marry her, when you are the most honoured of people in the sight of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the earliest of them in Islam? The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the house of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: O Aishah! When you see the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a pleasant mood and he is with you, mention to him that I have spoken of Fatimah; perhaps Allah Almighty will grant her to me. The narrator says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a pleasant mood, she said: O Messenger of Allah! Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) has spoken of Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and instructed me to mention it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Let the decree (of Allah) come first. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came back to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Dear father, I wish I had not mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what I mentioned. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) met Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) told Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) what Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) had told him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: O Hafsah! When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) comes to you, mention this matter to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mention Fatimah; perhaps Allah Almighty will grant her to me. The narrator says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) and Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a pleasant mood, she mentioned Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Not until the command of Allah Almighty is revealed. Later Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) met Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), and Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to him: Dear father, I wish I had not mentioned anything about this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: What is the reason that you do not marry Fatimah? He said: I fear that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will not marry her to me. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If he will not marry her to you, then to whom will he marry her, when you are the closest of Allah Almighty's creation to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He had no one like Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) or Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) to speak to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for him. He met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I wish to marry Fatimah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Very well. He said: I have nothing but my Hutami coat of mail. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Gather whatever you have and bring it to me. So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) brought twelve uqiyyah, which come to four hundred and eighty dirhams. He brought that money to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married him to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). He divided the money into three portions, gave it to Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: Buy perfume with one portion of it. The narrator says: I think the narration also contains these words: With the rest of the money buy the household goods a woman needs. When that lady had finished preparing all the goods, they sent Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) off as a bride and brought her to the house of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ali! Do not say anything to your wife until I come to you. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to them; Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was sitting wrapped in a veil, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was also sitting, and Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) was also in the house. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Umm Ayman! Bring me a cup of water. She brought a bowl containing water. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank some of the water, then rinsed his mouth into it, then handed it to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she drank it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took some of the water and sprinkled it on her forehead, between her shoulders and on her chest. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed the water to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Ali! Drink. Then he took some of the water and sprinkled it on his forehead and between his shoulders, and then said: These are my Ahl al-Bayt; (O Allah!) remove impurity from them and purify them thoroughly! Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) left, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ali! Go to your wife.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: Proposals for Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) used to be made before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and whoever mentioned this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him no answer, until people lost hope in this matter. Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) met Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: By Allah, my impression of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is that he wants to marry this lady to you. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: For what reason have you formed this opinion? By Allah! I am not either of the two kinds of men. I am not a man of worldly goods, whose goods one might wish to obtain; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) knows that I have neither dinars nor dirhams. Nor am I that disbeliever who is treated gently regarding his religion, that is, to win his heart. I am the first person to accept Islam. Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I urge you to do this, for it is my wish that it should happen. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What should I say? He said: Say that you have come to Allah and His Messenger with a proposal of marriage for Fatimah bint Muhammad. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went, finding it difficult. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: O Ali! It seems you need something. He said: Yes, I have come to you to propose to Allah and His Messenger for marriage with Fatimah bint Muhammad. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Welcome! This was a vague expression. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went back to Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him): I have done what you told me, but in reply the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) only said 'welcome' to me, which is a vague expression. Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By the One who sent the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will marry her to you, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has never broken a promise nor spoken an untruth. I urge you to go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again tomorrow and say: O Prophet of Allah, when will you send her to me as a bride? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: This was even harder for me than the first. He said: Should I not say: O Messenger of Allah, what has become of my matter? Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You must say what I have told you. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went the next day and said: O Messenger of Allah! When will you send her to me as a bride? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Tonight, if Allah wills. Then he called Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Bilal! I am marrying my daughter to my cousin, and I wish that it be the way of my Ummah that food is served at the time of marriage. So go to the flock, take a sheep and four mudds of grain, and prepare food for me in a large bowl so that I may feed the Muhajirun and the Ansar with it. When you have finished, let me know. Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) went and did what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered him; then he brought that bowl to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and placed it before him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) touched its top with his hand and then said: Keep bringing the people to me group by group; when one group has finished, let another come, and let no one come a second time. So the people began to come; whenever one group finished, another came, until all the people had finished. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the food that was left, put some of his saliva in it, prayed for blessing in it, and then said: O Bilal! Carry this to your mothers and tell them: Eat of it yourselves and feed whoever comes to you. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and went to his wives, and said: I have married my daughter to my cousin, and you know what standing this daughter has with me. Now I am about to send her off as a bride, so you must take part. Those women got up; they perfumed Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), dressed her in clothes and adorned her with jewellery. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in; when the women saw him they left. There was a curtain between the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and them. Only Asma bint Umays remained. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked her: Who are you? She said: I am the one who will look after your daughter. When a girl is sent off as a bride, there should be a woman with her who stays near her, so that if the girl faces some need or wants something, she can hand it to her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I ask my Lord to protect you likewise from Satan the accursed, from in front of you, from behind you, from your right and from your left. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called out loudly to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). She came, and when she saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), she felt shy and began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) feared that she might be weeping because Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had no wealth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Why are you weeping? I have not fallen short in anything concerning you; I have chosen for you the best person of my family. By the One in whose Hand is my soul! I have married you to a man who is fortunate in this world and who will be among the righteous in the Hereafter. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) comforted her. Then he said: Asma, bring me a vessel and fill it with water. Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) brought a vessel; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rinsed his mouth into it, then passed his hands over his face and his feet. Then he called Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), took a palmful of water and poured it on her head, and poured some on her chest, then sprinkled his own skin and her skin. Then he embraced her and made this supplication: O Allah! She is from me and I am from her. O Allah! Just as You removed impurity from me and purified me, purify these two as well. Then he called for another vessel of water, then called Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and did with him as he had done with Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her); then he supplicated for Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) just as he had supplicated for Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). Then he said to them both: Get up, both of you, and go to your house. May Allah Almighty keep you together, place blessing in your private affairs and set your affairs right. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and closed their door with his own hand. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: Sayyidah Asma bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) told me that she kept watching the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) closely; until he entered his apartment, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continuously supplicated for the two of them specifically, and he did not include anyone else with them in that supplication.

Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Some people from the Ansar said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): You should marry Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and greeted him with salam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What does the son of Abu Talib need? He said: O Messenger of Allah! I wish to mention Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Welcome. He said nothing more. Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) went out to those people of the Ansar who were waiting for him. They asked: What happened? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I could not make anything of it; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) only said to me: Welcome. They said: Even one of the two words from the Messenger of Allah would have been enough for you, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has used both words for you. When Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) had been married to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ali! A walimah is necessary for a wedding. Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have a ram. Then the Ansar collected some sa' of grain for him. When the night of the wedding came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): Do not say anything until you meet me. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for water, performed ablution with it, then poured that water over me, and made this supplication: O Allah! Bless them both, and bless them both in their marriage.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration, and Imam al-Bazzar recorded something similar, except that he narrated these words: Some people from the Ansar said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): It would be fitting if you proposed to Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). And at the end of this narration the words are: "O Allah! Bless them both, and bless them both in their union!" The narrators of both are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Abd al-Karim bin Salit; Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyidah Asma bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was sent as a bride to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), we found nothing in the house except sand spread out, a pillow stuffed with leaves, a pitcher and a cup. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): Do not do anything (the narrator is unsure whether the words are:) do not go near your wife until I come to you. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and asked: Is my brother here? Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her), the mother of Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both), who was an Abyssinian woman and a righteous woman, said: O Messenger of Allah! This is your brother, and you have married your daughter to him? The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had established brotherhood among his Companions, and he established brotherhood between Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and himself. He said: O Umm Ayman! That does happen. Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a vessel containing water, then recited what Allah willed, then passed his hand over the chest and face of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Then he called Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she got up and came to him, bent over in her cloak out of shyness. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sprinkled water on her too and recited what Allah willed, then said to her: I have not fallen short concerning you in this, for I have married you to the person of my family who is most beloved to me. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) noticed someone behind the curtain and asked: Who is it? She replied: Asma. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Asma bint Umays? She said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Have you come here to be with the daughter of the Messenger of Allah? She said: Yes! When a girl is married and sent off as a bride, there should be a woman near her, so that if she faces any need, she can fulfil it. Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made a supplication for me, which is the most reliable deed I have. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): Take your wife. Then he left, and kept supplicating for the two of them until he entered his apartment.

Hadith Takhrij«اخرجه الطبراني فى المعجم الكبير (137/24)»
One narration is reported from Sayyidah Asma bint Umays (may Allah be pleased with her); she says: When Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was sent off as a bride, the next morning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and knocked at the door. Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) got up, went to him and opened the door for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: O Umm Ayman! Call my brother to me. She said: He is your brother, and you have married your daughter to him? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Umm Ayman! Call him to me. The women heard the voice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and moved aside. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat in a corner. Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him over, then sprinkled water on him, then said: Call Fatimah to me. When she came, she was bent over out of shyness. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Be quiet; I have married you to the person of my Ahl al-Bayt who is most beloved to me. After that the narrator mentioned the narration as before. Imam al-Tabarani recorded all these narrations, and the narrators of the first narration are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he sent a khamil with her. Ata says: He asked: What is meant by khamil? He replied: A sheet; and he sent a leather pillow stuffed with leaves and idhkhir, and he sent a waterskin. They spread the sheet beneath them and covered themselves with half of it.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration. Its chain contains a narrator, Ata bin al-Sa'ib, who had suffered from ikhtilat (confusion in memory).

Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came. After that the narrator mentioned the complete hadith. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:

Sayyidah Umm Salma (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), fell into the illness in which she passed away, I was nursing her. One day I saw her in good condition; since she had fallen ill I had not seen her in such a condition. That lady says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had gone out for some task. Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Prepare water for a bath for me. I prepared water for her bath, and she bathed thoroughly. Then she said: Give me my new clothes. She was given the new clothes, and Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) put them on. Then she said: Spread my bed for me in the middle of the house. I did so, and she lay down. She faced the qiblah, placed her hand under her cheek, and then said: Now my death is approaching; I have purified myself, so let no woman uncover me now. Then she passed away in that very place. That lady says: When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came, I informed him of this.
Imam Ahmad recorded this narration, and its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.

Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil says: When the time of the death of Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) drew near, she told Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) put out water for her bath. She bathed and purified herself, then she called for the garments of her shroud. Coarse garments were brought to her and she put them on, and she applied hanut (embalming perfume) to them. Then she told Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when she passed away she should not be uncovered, and that she should be wrapped in those same garments. The narrator says: I asked my teacher: Do you know of anyone who did this? He replied: Yes, Kathir bin al-Abbas did the same, and he had it written on the edges of his shroud: Kathir bin al-Abbas bears witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration. The narrator Abdullah bin Muhammad did not live in the time of this incident, so the chain is munqati' (broken).
