Ibn Jurayj states: More than one person told me that Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), was the eldest of his daughters.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators up to Ibn Jurayj are the narrators of the Sahih.

Al-Zubayr bin Bakkar states: Among the children of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna al-Qasim (may Allah be pleased with him) was born, who was the eldest of his children; then Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) was born. Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), was married to Sayyiduna Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' bin Abd Shams (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) bore him a son, Ali, and a daughter, Umamah. Their son was being nursed among Banu Ghadir. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had him weaned, and the boy's father (that is, Sayyiduna Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him)) was at that time a polytheist. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is my partner in anything, I have the greater right to it; and whichever disbeliever is the partner of a Muslim in anything, that Muslim has a greater right to it than that disbeliever." Al-Zubayr states: Umar bin Abi Bakr al-Mu'ammali told me that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), the son of Sayyiduna Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him), who was also the son of the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), was close to puberty when he passed away. On the day of the Conquest of Makkah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had seated him behind himself on his mount.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and the narrator Umar bin Abi Bakr is matruk (abandoned).

Hadith Takhrij«اخرجه الطبراني فى المعجم الكبير (424/22)»
Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her), the honoured wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), states: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had come to Madinah, his daughter Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) set out from Makkah with Kinanah (the narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are) Ibn Kinanah. Those people came after her in pursuit. Habbar bin al-Aswad reached her and kept striking her camel with his spear until he brought it down. Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) miscarried and began to bleed; then she was mounted on a riding animal. A dispute arose between Banu Hashim and Banu Umayyah about her. Banu Umayyah said that they had the greater right to this lady, because she was the wife of Sayyiduna Abu al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), who belonged to Banu Umayyah. The lady stayed with Hind bint Utbah bin Rabi'ah, and Hind said to her: "All this has happened because of your father." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Will you not go and bring Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her)?" He replied: "Very well, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take this ring and give this ring to her." Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) set off and met a shepherd. He asked: "Whose animals do you graze?" He replied: "Abu al-As's." Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Whose goats are these?" He replied: "Zaynab bint Muhammad's." Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) walked with him for a while, then said: "If I give you something, will you give it to Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her)? Do not mention it to anyone." He said: "Very well." So Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the shepherd the ring. The shepherd went, brought the goats in and gave the ring to Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her). Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) recognised the ring and asked: "Who gave you this?" The shepherd said: "A man gave it." Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: "Where did you leave him?" He said: "At such-and-such a place." Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) fell silent. When night came, Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) went out to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) came to him, Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: "Ride in front." Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "No, rather you sit in front." Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) mounted and Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) sat behind him, until she arrived (in Madinah). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She is the best of my daughters; she suffered hardship because of me." The narrator states: News of this reached Imam Zayn al-Abidin (Ali bin Husayn), so he went to Urwah and said: "What is this hadith that has reached me from you, that you narrate it and seek to diminish the right of Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her)?" Urwah said: "By Allah! I would not like to be given everything between the East and the West in exchange for diminishing anything of the right of Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). However, after today I will never narrate this hadith."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and recorded part of it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; al-Bazzar also recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), the honoured wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), states: Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), asked her husband Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' for permission; this was at the time when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had already left on his emigration. Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) asked permission to go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as well, and her husband gave her permission. She came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Later Sayyiduna Abu al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) came after her to Madinah and sent her the message: "Obtain a guarantee of safety for me from your father." Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) put her head out of the door of her apartment while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading the people in the dawn prayer, and Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O people! I am Zaynab, and I have granted protection to Abu al-As bin al-Rabi'." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he said: "O people! I had no knowledge of this; I too have only just heard it. Any person among the Muslims may grant protection on behalf of the Muslims."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, in whom there is weakness, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Hadith Takhrij«اخرجه الطبراني فى المعجم الكبير (425/22)»
Ibn Ishaq states: Among the captives of the Battle of Badr was Sayyiduna Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' bin Abd al-Uzza bin Abd Shams (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the son-in-law of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the husband of his daughter. Sayyiduna Abu al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) was counted among the select men of Makkah who were prominent in wealth and trustworthiness. He was the son of Sayyidah Halah bint Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with her), and Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) was his maternal aunt. Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to marry Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not go against Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). This was before revelation came down upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) regarded this young man as her own child. When Allah Almighty honoured the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with prophethood, and Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) and his daughters believed in the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), affirmed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as truthful, testified that what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had brought was the truth, and adopted the religion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu al-As remained firm upon his polytheism. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had married one of his daughters, Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her) or perhaps Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), to Utbah bin Abi Lahab. When disputes arose between Quraysh and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) over the command of Allah Almighty, someone said: "You have freed (Sayyiduna) Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) from worry. Send his daughters back to him so that he becomes occupied with these daughters." The people went to Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' and said to him: "Separate from your wife, and we will marry you to whomever you wish." He said: "No, that cannot be. I will not separate from my wife, even if I were to be given any woman of Quraysh in exchange for my wife." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to praise his goodness as a son-in-law in this regard. The people went to the sinner Utbah bin Abi Lahab and said: "Divorce the daughter of (Sayyiduna) Muhammad, and we will marry you to whichever woman of Quraysh you wish." He said: "If you marry me to the daughter of Aban bin Sa'id bin al-As" (the narrator is in doubt; perhaps the words are) "to the daughter of Sa'id bin al-As, then very well." Then he separated from his wife, and they married him to the daughter of Sa'id bin al-As. That enemy of Allah had not consummated the marriage with her (Sayyidah Ruqayyah), and Allah Almighty took her out of his hands as an honour for her and a disgrace for him. After him, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) married that daughter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was overpowered in his affair in Makkah and could not make anything lawful or unlawful there. Islam had separated Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), from her husband Sayyiduna Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him), but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not yet able to formally separate the two of them. After accepting Islam, Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) remained with him (her husband) upon her Islam while her husband remained a polytheist, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) emigrated to Madinah, while Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) remained with her husband in Makkah. When Quraysh marched to Badr, Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' was among them. He was then among the captives of Badr and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah.

Hadith Takhrij«اخرجه الطبراني فى المعجم الكبير (426/22)»
Ibn Ishaq states: Yahya bin Abbad bin Abdullah bin al-Zubayr reported from his father Abbad the following statement of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), the honoured wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When the people of Makkah sent the ransom for their captives, Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), sent the ransom for her husband Abu al-As. In that ransom she also sent a necklace which Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) had given her at the time of her wedding. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that necklace, he was overcome with intense tenderness, and he said: 'If you see fit, release Zaynab's captive and return her property to her.' The people said: 'Very well, O Messenger of Allah!' So the people released him and sent back to Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) the property that was hers. The narrator states: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a pledge from Sayyiduna Abu al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) and obtained his promise that he would let Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This condition was imposed at the time of his release, but the condition was made known neither by him nor by the Messenger of Allah such that people would come to know of it. When Sayyiduna Abu al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) left for Makkah and was set free, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) and a man from the Ansar, and he said: 'Stay at Batn Ya'jaj; Zaynab will pass by you. Accompany her and bring her to me.' The two of them set out to that place; this was a month or so after the Battle of Badr. Then when Sayyiduna Abu al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) reached Makkah, he instructed Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) to go to her father, and she left openly.

Ibn Ishaq states: Abdullah bin Abi Bakr bin Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm said: I was told the following from Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her); she says: I was in Makkah preparing to go and join my father when I met Hind bint Utbah. She said: "O daughter of my uncle! If you need any provisions for the journey by which you may reach your father, do not hesitate with me about it, for between women there are not the hostilities that there are between men." Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) says: By Allah! I think that she would have done what she said, but I was also wary of her, so I denied that I intended to do so. Then I prepared my provisions for the journey. When I had finished my preparations, my brother-in-law Kinanah bin al-Rabi', my husband's brother, brought me a camel and I mounted it. He took his bow and his quiver, then set out with me in the daytime, leading the animal, while Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) was in her howdah. Some men of Quraysh came to know of this and set out in pursuit of Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) until they caught up with her at Dhu Tuwa. The first of them to reach Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) were Habbar bin al-Aswad bin al-Muttalib bin Asad bin Abd al-Uzza bin Qusayy and Nafi' bin Abd al-Qays al-Zuhri. Habbar frightened Sayyidah Zaynab's camel with his spear while Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) was in the howdah. She was pregnant, so people say; when she fell from it, she miscarried. Her brother-in-law dismounted, set an arrow from his quiver and said: "By Allah, whoever tries to come near, I will shoot him with an arrow." The people drew back from him. Then Abu Sufyan came with the leading men of Quraysh and said: "O man, hold back your arrows from us; let us first talk with you." He held back. Abu Sufyan came forward, and he too came forward. Abu Sufyan said: "You have not done right. You are taking this woman away in broad daylight before the people's eyes, and you know of our calamity and distress which has come upon us from (Sayyiduna) Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). When you take his daughter openly from among us to him, people will think that we are facing this humiliation because of the calamity that befell us, and it will show our weakness. By my life, we have no need to stop this woman from going to her father. Rather, take this woman back; when the voices die down (that is, when people go quiet) and people talk about how we brought this woman back, then take this woman away secretly and bring her to her father." So that man did just that. After some days had passed, when people had calmed down, he set out with this woman at night and handed this woman over to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companion. Then the two of them brought this woman to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Meanwhile Sayyiduna Abu al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) stayed in Makkah, and Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) remained with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); Islam had separated the two of them. Then, shortly before the Conquest, Sayyiduna Abu al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) set out for Syria with trade goods. He had with him some people's wealth with which he had been entrusted, and some wealth of men of Quraysh which those people had given to Sayyiduna Abu al-As (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyiduna Abu al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) had finished his trading and was returning, he encountered an expedition of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and they seized the goods he had with him. When the expedition came to Madinah with the property it had taken, Sayyiduna Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him) also came to Madinah at night. He came to Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and sought her protection, and Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) granted him protection; he had come to recover his property. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to offer the dawn prayer, as Yazid bin Ruman has related, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir and the people also said the takbir. At that moment Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) came out from the row of the women and said: "O people! I have granted protection to Abu al-As bin al-Rabi'." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had concluded the prayer with the salam, he turned towards the people and said: "O people! Did you hear?" The people said: "Yes!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul! I knew nothing of it until I heard it just now. Any individual among the Muslims may grant protection on their behalf." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer and came to his daughter, and he said: "O my daughter! Look after him well, but do not let him come near you, for you are not lawful for him."

Ibn Ishaq states: Abdullah bin Abi Bakr told me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent an expedition which seized the property of Sayyiduna Abu al-As bin al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This man is one of us, as you know, and you have taken his property. If you do good and give him back his property, we would like that; and if you decline, then it is the fay' (spoils) of Allah Almighty which He has granted you as fay', and you have the greater right to it." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! We will return it." So the people returned his property to him, so much so that one man brought back an old waterskin, another brought a vessel, and one of them even brought a shizaz (a small wooden peg), until they had returned all of his property to him with nothing missing. He carried all that property to Makkah and returned to every man of Quraysh who had given him goods his property. Then he said: "O people of Quraysh! Does any one of you still have any property with me that he has not received?" The people said: "No! May Allah Almighty reward you with good; we have found you chaste and honourable." Sayyiduna Abu al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty, and I also bear witness that (Sayyiduna) Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger. Nothing kept me from accepting Islam in the presence of (Sayyiduna) Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) except my fear that you would think I had intended to seize your wealth. Now that Allah Almighty has had it delivered to you and I am free of that responsibility, I accept Islam." Then he set out from there until he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
