Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Providing food on one day at a wedding is Sunnah, providing it for two days carries virtue, and providing it for three days is showing off and seeking fame."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not perform his aqiqah; rather, shave his head and give in charity, in the path of Allah, silver equal to the weight of his hair." Then, when Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was born after him, Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) did the same.
A narration is reported from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: When Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth to Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him), she said: Shall I not perform the aqiqah for my son by sacrificing an animal? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No! Rather, shave his head and give silver equal to the weight of his hair in charity to the poor and the awqas." (The narrator said:) The awqas were those needy people connected with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who used to stay on the platform of the Suffah or in the mosque. He said: "Whoever has a child born to him and would like to offer a sacrifice on behalf of his child, let him do so."
In one narration, the narrator reported this from his father, or perhaps from his paternal uncle. Ahmad recorded all of these reports; they contain a narrator who has not been named, and the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

He ordered that the hair be removed from their heads, and he said: "Slaughter in his name and say: In the name of Allah, seeking blessing; Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, this is (received) from You and is for You, and this is the aqiqah of so-and-so." The narrator states: In the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah), people would take a piece of cotton, put it in the blood of the aqiqah (animal), and then place it on the child's head.
