Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 6181

A narration is reported from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: When Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth to Sayyiduna Imam Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him), she said: Shall I not perform the aqiqah for my son by sacrificing an animal? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No! Rather, shave his head and give silver equal to the weight of his hair in charity to the poor and the awqas." (The narrator said:) The awqas were those needy people connected with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who used to stay on the platform of the Suffah or in the mosque. After this, the narrator mentioned the report as before.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and it is a hasan (good) hadith.
