Ata narrates that he heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) say: "If you are able, do not go out (for the Eid prayer) on the day of Eid al-Fitr before eating something." Ata said: Ever since I heard this from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), I make sure to eat something before going out, even if I only eat the edge of a thin flatbread and drink milk or water. I asked: "What did he intend by this?" He said: "I think I heard him relate it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he said: 'They would not go out until the day had advanced, and they would say: We eat something so that we are not troubled during our prayer.'"
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih; al-Tabarani also recorded it.
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to eat something on the day of Eid al-Fitr before going out.
Abu Ya'la, Ahmad, al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it. The wording of his narration is: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to eat something on the day of Eid al-Fitr before going (to the prayer), and he would order the people to do the same." The chain of al-Tabarani contains al-Waqidi, who has been heavily criticised, and before him is Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil, who has also been criticised, though he has been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: It is the Sunnah that you eat something before going out (for the Eid prayer), even if it is only one date.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. His wording is: "It is the Sunnah that on the day of Eid al-Fitr you do not go out until you have given sadaqat al-fitr and eaten something before going out." The chain of al-Tabarani is hasan (good), and the chain of al-Bazzar contains a narrator whom I do not know.
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Eid al-Fitr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to eat seven dates before going (to the prayer), but on the day of Eid al-Adha he did not eat anything (before the prayer).
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Abu Abdullah Nasih bin Abdullah al-Ha'ik, who is matruk (abandoned).
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Eid al-Fitr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to eat something before going to the Eid prayer ground.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Sawwar bin Mus'ab, who is extremely da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Eid al-Fitr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not go out until he had eaten something, but on the day of sacrifice he (peace and blessings be upon him) would not eat anything until he returned, and (after coming back from the prayer) he would eat from the meat of his sacrificial animal.
(Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Al-Tirmidhi recorded this narration, but he did not include these words: "he would eat from the meat of his sacrificial animal."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and Ahmad also recorded it; its chain contains Uqbah bin Abdullah al-Rifa'i, who is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out for the Eid, he (peace and blessings be upon him) had a short spear and a shield with him.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Abu Kurz, who is da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ammar al-Qaraz (may Allah be pleased with him), the mu'adhdhin of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered the sermon on the two Eids, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would deliver the sermon holding a bow. (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah recorded this narration from him: "When he (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon during war, he would deliver it holding a bow in his hand."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir. Another hadith from this Companion, recorded in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, has already passed in the chapter on Jumu'ah; both of these narrations are da'if (weak).
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to go out on the day of Eid, and he would take his family out with him as well.
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains al-Hajjaj bin Artah, who has been criticised. Its remaining narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), even the secluded young girls would come out (to attend the prayer) on the two Eids.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
The sister of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Going out is obligatory upon every grown girl."
Ahmad recorded it, and Abu Ya'la recorded it, adding these words: "on the two Eids."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a female Tabi'i whose name is not mentioned.
The Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Should women also go out on the day of Eid?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes!" It was asked: "Young girls as well?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! If a woman does not have a garment (that is, a sheet to cover her head) that she can wear, then she should take the sheet of her female companion."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Muti' bin Maymun. Ibn Adi says: Two hadiths are reported through him, and neither of them is mahfuz (preserved). Ali bin al-Madini says: He is thiqah (trustworthy).
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Women have no share in going out, except when one is compelled, meaning a woman who has no servant; but the matter is different for the two Eids, Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr. And on the road they (women) have a right only to its edges."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Sawwar bin Mus'ab, who is matruk al-hadith (abandoned in hadith).
Utbah bin Abdullah bin Amr narrates: My father related to me from my grandfather, who said: Once I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Eid, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call the chief of the Ansar to me!" So the people called Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ubayy! Go to the Eid prayer ground and give orders for it to be swept, and instruct the people to come out." When he reached the door, he came back and said: "O Messenger of Allah! The women as well?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The young girls and the menstruating women too shall be among the people, and they shall take part in the supplication."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Yazid bin Shaddad al-Hunna'i, who is majhul (unknown), and likewise the narrator Utbah bin Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As is majhul (unknown).
Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to go to the Eid on foot, and on returning he would come back by a different way from the one by which he had gone.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Khalid bin Ilyas, who is matruk (abandoned).
Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) go to the (Eid prayer ground); he went by one way and came back by another way.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Khalid bin Ilyas, who is matruk (abandoned). The hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) will come later.
Sa'id bin Aws al-Ansari narrates from his father that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When it is the day of Eid al-Fitr, the angels stand along the roads and call out loudly: 'O assembly of Muslims! Go forth to your Generous Lord, who bestows good and will grant a reward for it. You were commanded to stand in prayer at night, and you did so; you were commanded to fast in the day, and you fasted and obeyed your Lord, so now receive your reward!' When the people have prayed, a caller calls out: 'Indeed, your Lord has forgiven you, so return to your homes rightly guided.' So it is the day of reward, and in the heavens this day is called 'the Day of Reward.'" In one narration the words are "Merciful Lord" instead of "Generous Lord," and He says: "I have forgiven you all your sins."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Jabir al-Ju'fi, whom Sufyan al-Thawri declared thiqah (trustworthy); he narrated from him, and Shu'bah also narrated from him, but people declared him da'if (weak), and he is matruk (abandoned).
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: On the two Eids, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to make this supplication: "O Allah, we ask You for a life that is protected, a death that is sound, and a return that brings neither disgrace nor shame. O Allah, do not destroy us suddenly, do not seize us unexpectedly, and do not hasten our death before a right is fulfilled or a will is made. O Allah, we ask You for chastity, sufficiency, piety, guidance and a good end in the Hereafter and in this world, and we seek refuge in You from doubt, from discord, and from showing off and seeking fame in Your religion. O Turner of hearts, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Yourself; indeed, You are the Bestower."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Nahshal bin Sa'id, who is matruk (abandoned).
Wahb bin Kaysan narrates: On the day of Eid I heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both), when he had prayed before the sermon and then stood up and addressed the people, (say:) "O people! All of this is the Sunnah (laid down) by Allah Almighty and the Sunnah of His Messenger."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to pray before the sermon on the day of Eid.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). It is recorded in the Sahih with these words: "On the day of sacrifice, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed and then delivered the sermon."
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: On the days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to begin with the prayer.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, who has been criticised.
