Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a tent of leather. I greeted him with salam and said: May I come in? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come in." I put my head inside and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performing a thorough ablution. I said: O Messenger of Allah, shall I come in completely? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Completely." When I sat down, he said to me: "Count six things before the Hour: the death of your Prophet." Awf says: I was grieved by this as I had never been grieved before. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: one." I said: One. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And the conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis; and a tribulation in which pestilence will spread among the Arabs - it will be a disease that seizes you like the disease of sheep; and wealth will spread among you so much that a man will be given a hundred dinars and will be displeased; and there will be a truce between you and Banu al-Asfar, then they will break the covenant and come against you under eighty banners, with twelve thousand under each banner."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards the sky and said: "This is the time when knowledge will be taken away." A man of the Ansar called Ziyad bin Labid said: O Messenger of Allah, how will knowledge be taken away when you have delivered it and hearts have retained it? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I used to consider you one of the most knowledgeable of the people of Madinah." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the misguidance of the Jews and Christians despite the Book of Allah that they have in their hands. Jubayr bin Nufayr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Then I met Sayyiduna Shaddad bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) and narrated to him the hadith of Sayyiduna Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: Awf has spoken the truth. Shall I not tell you what will be the first thing to be taken away? (Then he himself) said: Humility (khushu'); you will not see anyone humble.

So we were called, and I used to be called before Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him), and I was given one share; then he became displeased, so much so that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and those present with him came to know of it. Then some gold was left over, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept lifting it with the tip of his stick and it would fall, then he would lift it and it would fall again, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "How will you be on the day when treasures of this are hoarded for you?" No one answered him. Then Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, we wish that such wealth were hoarded for us; then whoever would be patient would be patient, and whoever would fall into trial would fall into it. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Perhaps you will be badly tried by it."

Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out and I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him), until we entered the synagogue of the Jews on the day of their festival, and they disliked his (peace and blessings be upon him) coming in. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O assembly of Jews, show me twelve men from among you who will testify that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah, and Allah will remove from every Jew beneath the sky the wrath that is upon him." They fell silent and no one answered. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said it again, and still no one answered; then he said it a third time, and still no one answered. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have refused. By Allah, I am al-Hashir (the Gatherer), I am al-Aqib (the Last), and I am al-Muqaffi (the one who follows after the prophets), whether you believe or deny." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back and I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him), until, when we were about to leave, a man called out from behind: O Muhammad, wait a moment. He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards him, and that man said: O assembly of Jews, what kind of man do you know me to be among you? They said: By Allah, we do not know of anyone among us more learned in the Book of Allah or of better understanding than you, nor than your father before you, nor than your grandfather before your father. He said: Then I testify, swearing by Allah, that he is the Prophet of Allah whom you find in the Torah. They said: You have lied. Then they rejected him and said evil things about him. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have lied; we will never accept your word." Then the three of us went out: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I and Ibn Salam (may Allah be pleased with him). And Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Say: Tell me, if this (Qur'an) is from Allah and you disbelieve in it, while a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something like it and believed, while you were arrogant, then indeed Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people." [Al-Ahqaf: 10]

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not take the fifth (khums) from the slain enemy's belongings (salab). And that a madadi (a man who had come as reinforcement) was his companion in the expedition of Mu'tah, which took place on the edge of Syria. The Muslims met the enemy, and a Roman among them began attacking the Muslims fiercely; he was riding a reddish-golden horse, his saddle was worked with gold, his belt was adorned with gold and his sword was embellished with gold, and he would charge at the Muslims. That madadi stealthily lay in wait for him until he passed by him; then he hamstrung his horse, and he fell, and then he got on top of him and killed him with the sword. When Allah defeated the Romans, evidence was established in favour of the madadi that he was the one who had killed him, so Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him his sword and a fifth of his wealth. Awf said: I spoke to Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled that the salab belongs to the killer? He said: Of course, but I considered it too much. Awf said: There was some exchange of words between me and him, and I said: By Allah, I will certainly inform the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) of what you did. Awf said: When we gathered with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Awf mentioned what had happened, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What prevented you from giving it to him?" Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I considered it too much. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give it to him." Awf said: Then I said: O Khalid, did you see? Did I not fulfil for you what I promised you? At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said to Khalid: "Do not give it to him." And he said: "Will you not leave my commanders to me?"

Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man from Himyar killed a man from the enemy and wanted to take his belongings, but Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him), who was their commander, prevented him. Sayyiduna Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Khalid, what prevented you from giving him his belongings?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, I considered it too much. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give it to him." Then Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), and Awf pulled his cloak and said: Did I not fulfil for you what I told you regarding the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? At this he (peace and blessings be upon him) was provoked to anger, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Khalid, do not give it to him. Will you not leave my commanders to me? The parable of you and them is like that of a man who bought camels and grazed them, then watched for the time to water them and brought them to a watering trough; they went into it, drank its clear water and left its muddy water. So its clear water is for you and its muddy water is against them."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My Ummah will split into seventy-some sects. The greatest trial for my Ummah among them will be people who measure matters by their own opinion, and so they will make the unlawful lawful and make the lawful unlawful."

Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Awf, how will you be when this Ummah splits into seventy-three sects, one of them in Paradise and all the rest in Hell?" I said: When will that be, O Messenger of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the guards become many, slave women become owners, unworthy people sit on the pulpits, the Qur'an is taken as musical instruments, the mosques are adorned, the pulpits are raised high, the fay' is made the possession of a few in turn, zakah is regarded as a penalty, a trust is regarded as booty, understanding of the religion is acquired for other than Allah, a man obeys his wife, disobeys his mother and keeps his father at a distance, the later people of this Ummah curse its earlier ones, the leadership of a tribe is in the hands of its sinner, the chief of a people is the most contemptible of them, and a man is honoured to be safe from his evil. On the day this happens, that will be the time; and on that day people will flee to Syria to protect themselves from their enemy." I said: Will Syria be conquered? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, soon. Then trials will occur after its conquest; then a dark, dusty trial will come; then trials will follow one after another until a man from my household comes forth who will be called al-Mahdi. If you meet him, follow him and be among the rightly guided."
